Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the breakdown in sustainabilityâ€"the capacity of the planet to provide quality of life now and in the futureâ€"that is signaled by disaster. The authors bring to light why land use and sustainability have been ignored in devising public policies to deal with natural hazards. They lay out a vision of sustainability, concrete suggestions for policy reform, and procedures for planning. The book chronicles the long evolution of land-use planning and identifies key components of sustainable planning for hazards. Stressing the importance of balance in land use, the authors offer principles and specific reforms for achieving their visions of sustainability.
Book Synopsis Planning for Natural Disasters: A Case Study in Northern Utah by :
Download or read book Planning for Natural Disasters: A Case Study in Northern Utah written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades Utah's Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG) region has seen rapid growth and development. Maintenance of public health, welfare, and safety has become a priority for local and county governments. The purpose of this study was to develop criteria for and locate landscape features that could affect human health or valuable structures. The model created seeks to maximize human health by giving planners information on which areas may harm water quality and quantity, may cause structural damage, and may pose a threat to safety. The landscape features included in the model are: avalanche and steep slopes, earthquake fault lines, mudslide areas, shallow groundwater, high shrink and swell soils, flood plains, and areas with high wildfire danger. The MAG region is an area that represents other rapidly growing areas of the county. While it may not have the same natural hazards as other areas, the public health, welfare, and safety model presented could easily be used in other areas where planners want to emphasize natural disaster mitigation.

Download or read book Engineering Geology of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Area, Utah written by William R. Lund and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1990 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologic exposures in the Salt Lake City region record a long history of sedimentation and tectonic activity extending back to the Precambrian Era. Today, the city lies above a deep, sediment-filled basin flanked by two uplifted range blocks, the Wasatch Range and the Oquirrh Mountains. The Wasatch Range is the easternmost expression of major Basin and Range extension in north-central Utah and is bounded on the west by the Wasatch fault zone (WFZ), a major zone of active normal faulting. During the late Pleistocene Epoch, the Salt Lake City region was dominated by a succession of inter-basin lakes. Lake Bonneville was the last and probably the largest of these lakes. By 11,000 yr BP, Lake Bonneville had receded to approximately the size of the present Great Salt Lake.
