Book excerpt: This catalogue raisonné describes the lamps and statuettes in terracotta of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, to which are added two lamps made of bronze. The collection, small but eclectic, has mostly been assembled in recent years and represents a wide variety of types in these two categories. After an introduction discussing the techniques involved in the production of these objects, the catalogue proper presents 44 lamps, 21 figurines and a single arula with full illustration. This catalogue makes the collection available to a wide readership: students, curators, archaeologists, art historians, collectors and everybody with serious interest in the material culture of the ancient world. This is the second volume of a series intended to make public the different parts of the museum’s collection of Mediterranean antiquities.

Book Synopsis Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum by : J. Paul Getty Museum
Download or read book Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum written by J. Paul Getty Museum and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2017-09-30 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum are more than six hundred ancient lamps that span the sixth century BCE to the seventh century CE, most from the Roman Imperial period and largely created in Asia Minor or North Africa. These lamps have much to reveal about life, religion, pottery, and trade in the ancient Graeco-Roman world. Most of the Museum’s lamps have never before been published, and this extensive typological catalogue will thus be an invaluable scholarly resource for art historians, archaeologists, and those interested in the ancient world. Reflecting the Getty's commitment to open content, Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum is available online at http://www.getty.edu/publications/ancientlamps and may be downloaded free of charge in multiple formats, including PDF, MOBI/Kindle, and EPUB, and features zoomable images and multiple views of every lamp, an interactive map drawn from the Ancient World Mapping Center, and bibliographic references. For readers who wish to have a bound reference copy, a paperback edition has been made available for sale.
Book Synopsis The Insula of the Menander at Pompeii by : Penelope M. Allison
Download or read book The Insula of the Menander at Pompeii written by Penelope M. Allison and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-01-04 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains catalogues, analyses, photographs and drawings of some 2,000 archaeological artefacts excavated from the Insula of the Menander in Pompeii. The catalogues, and analyses are organized by provenance - buildings, rooms, and location within rooms - so that the reader can understand the artefacts as household assemblages. The functions of artefacts and groups of artefacts are discussed, as are the Latin names which are often given to these artefacts, and the relationships of these assemblages to the state of occupancy of the buildings in the Insula during the last years of Pompeii. This study, therefore, provides a wealth of information, not only on the range and use of artefacts in Pompeian houses but also on Roman artefacts, and Roman society, more generally.

Book Synopsis Cosa, the Lamps by : Cleo Rickman Fitch
Download or read book Cosa, the Lamps written by Cleo Rickman Fitch and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fifth volume publishing materials from the Italian city of Cosa, excavated by Frank E. Brown, L. Richardson, jr, and Russell T. Scott, together with their colleagues at the American Academy. Cleo Rickman Fitch and Norma Wynick Goldman have compiled a wonderfully thorough and precise catalog of the diverse clay lamps employed at Cosa, both moldmade and wheelmade. The lamps, divided and described by type, are copiously illustrated: more than one hundred figures give the lamps' profiles, decorative images, and the makers' signatures. The authors have also provided an illustrated chronology of the lamps in relation to Cosa's history, an outline of the development of the lamps' features over time, and a concordance to Cosa inventory numbers. This comprehensive study offers information useful to scholars and students in a wide variety of areas. Since lamp technology was similar throughout the Mediterranean area, and since lamps were sold and used widely in the same region, this catalog provides helpful information on contemporary trade and commerce. These lamps were recovered from various kinds of buildings at Cosa, and they thereby offer information on various aspects of town life both secular and religious.

In La Splendeur des dieux, Gaëlle Tallet provides a full reappraisal of the transformation of Egyptian deities and of their Hellenized depiction in Graeco-Roman times, and questions the issues and strategies at stake behind the elaboration of an Egyptian Hellenicity.
