Book excerpt: Heat transfer rat5s for laminar, convective heat transfer in the entrance region between parallel plates were investigated. A hydrodynamic solution was used in the solution of the energy equation in finite difference form on a digital computer. The thermal boundary conditions include: constant heat input, constant wall temperature, one wall constant temperature and one wall insulated, and constant but different wall temperatures on the upper and lower walls. Approximate integral methods are shown to produce results that are in close agreement with the solutions in the present analysis for the constant heat input and constant wall temperature cases. The scope of the finite difference solution is limited to a narrow range of Prandtl numbers near unity, due to the small grid sizes required for convergence. (Author).

Book excerpt: The hydrodynamic and convective heat transfer characteristics of laminar flow in the entrance region between infinite flat plates are investigated. The equation governing the motion of the fluid, the Navier-Stokes equation, is written in terms of the stream function, using the von Mises transformation, and solved numerically on a digital computer. The velocity and pressure gradient distributions obtained compare favorably with existing results. The energy equation is solved in a similar manner for four different physical conditions: both walls at a uniform temperature, one wall at a uniform temperature and the other thermally insulated, both walls with a uniform heat flux, and one wall with a uniform heat flux and the other thermally insulated. The temperature profiles and Nusselt numbers are determined for each case, and the results presented in graphic and tabular form. (Author).

Book excerpt: The effects of combined convection and radiation heat transfer for laminar flow between parallel plates are investigated, and an experimental study of the convection theory is made. The von Mises transformation is applied to the equations of motion and the convection energy equation; the equations are then written in finite difference form for numerical solution. For the combined heat transfer problem one plate is insulated and the other is maintained at a uniform temperature. The governing radiation equations are developed assuming black plates with the entrance and exit of the channel participating in the radiative energy exchange. The plates were in one of three configurations: both plates at uniform temperature, top plate heated and bottom plate insulated, or bottom plate heated with the top plate insulated. An interferometer was used in the investigation and the measured temperature profiles and Nusselt numbers are compared with theoretical values obtained from the numerical solution of the governing equations. This book describes the analytical solutions for laminar fluid flow and forced convection heat transfer in circular and noncircular pipes, including applicable differential equations and boundary conditions involving velocity and temperature problems of fluid flow. The book also discusses fluid flow—how much power is required to pump fluids through the heat exchanger, as well as the heat transfer—the determination of q" distribution, and the temperature of fluid and walls. The text also analyzes the coolant or heat transfer fluid flows in a nuclear power reactor composed of a bundle of circular section fuel rods located inside a round tube. R.A. Axford addresses fluid flow and heat transfers results for the rod bundle geometry in "Heat Transfer in Rod Bundles." The book also provides an overview and guidelines that can be used for the designer and the applied mathematician. This book is suitable for engineers working in electronics, aerospace, instrumentation, and biomechanics that use cooling or heating exchanges or solar collection systems.

Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION TO CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER A highly practical intro to solving real-world convective heat transfer problems with MATLAB® and MAPLE In Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer, accomplished professor and mechanical engineer Nevzat Onur delivers an insightful exploration of the physical mechanisms of convective heat transfer and an accessible treatment of how to build mathematical models of these physical processes. Providing a new perspective on convective heat transfer, the book is comprised of twelve chapters, all of which contain numerous practical examples. The book emphasizes foundational concepts and is integrated with explanations of computational programs like MATLAB® and MAPLE to offer students a practical outlet for the concepts discussed within. The focus throughout is on practical, physical analysis rather than mathematical detail, which helps students learn to use the provided computational tools quickly and accurately. In addition to a solutions manual for instructors and the aforementioned MAPLE and MATLAB® files, Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer includes: A thorough introduction to the foundations of convective heat transfer, including coordinate systems, and continuum and thermodynamic equilibrium concepts Practical explorations of the fundamental equations of laminar convective heat transfer, including integral formulation and differential formulation Comprehensive discussions of the equations of incompressible external laminar boundary layers, including laminar flow forced convection and the thermal boundary layer concept In-depth examinations of dimensional analysis, including the dimensions of physical quantities, dimensional homogeneity, and dimensionless numbers Ideal for first-year graduates in mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering, Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer is also an indispensable resource for practicing engineers in academia and industry in the mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering fields.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of simple mathematical models of laminar natural convective flow within a long vertical parallel-plate channels and circular tubes kept at uniformly heated walls is revisited to seek a clear physical understanding of heat transfer mechanisms. A series solution method to analyze the fully developed flow and an integral solution method to analyze the developing flow are used. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 of this dissertation constitute a series of three-paper manuscripts for submission to archival journals. The channels and circular tubes considered here are assumed to be sufficiently long to yield a fully developed flow thermally as well as hydrodynamically before the exit is encountered. In such fully developed flow situation, the fluid mass flow rate naturally induced into the channel due to buoyancy is found to be a function of the wall heating condition. The predicted average Nusselt number as a function of GrPrD/L not only agrees with the existing literature but also is found to be in a functional form comparable to that proposed by Elenbaas (1942 a and b). Our results show that, in spite of being driven by buoyancy (rather than by a pump or a blower), the flow and heat transfer characteristics in the fully developed regime are essentially the same as those of fully developed laminar forced convection in which the flow is externally driven. This observation is confirmed to be valid also in the study (Chapter 5) of laminar natural convection in the developing (entrance) region within a long vertical parallel-plate channel and circular tube. The mass flow rate, which has to remain invariant with axial location even in the entry region, is determined by the flow in the fully developed region. This is the same mechanism involved in forced convection in which the fluid outside the developing boundary layers (i.e. the core flow) is forced to accelerate in the entrance region. The entrance length of channel natural convection is also discovered to be about the same as that in forced convection.
