Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic animal production has increased rapidly in recent years to keep up with the increasing consumer demand for organic meats. There are many guidelines and restrictions on what should go into the feedstuffs of organically farmed animals, from which difficulties arise when trying to ensure a well-balanced, nutritious diet without the use of any supplements. The book has been completely updated and revised to address how to formulate organic diets in situations where there is a declining supply of organic feed, as well as the feasibility of utilizing novel feedstuffs and their acceptability by consumers of organic meat products. Including the experiences of producers in relation to appropriate breeds and production systems for forage-based organic production, this book is an important read for researchers and students of organic food animal production, veterinary sciences and food; as well as food industry personnel and organic farmers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of collaborative work between INRA and the Association Française de Zootechnie (AFZ). The tables in this book present the chemical composition and nutritional values of the feed materials fed to the main farm species. The feed materials included in this publication are used both in the formulation of compound feeds and as straight feedstuffs (concentrates and by-products). The values of chemical composition were mainly obtained using field data collected by AFZ from laboratories specialising in animal feeding (the data base includes over one million values). The nutritional values result principally from experimental work performed by INRA and its partners. The data used take into account the evolution in feed materials and nutritional concepts. Important characteristics have been introduced, namely net energy for pigs (growing pigs and sows), amino acid digestibility, mineral availability and starch degradability for ruminants. In the present context of animal feeding and the new challenges that it faces (product quality and safety, animal health and welfare, environmental issues), this publication provides a reliable scientific reference document for feed manufacturers, veterinarians, extension officers, farmers, lecturers and students. Daniel Sauvant is professor of animal sciences at INA P-G, director of the Physiology of Nutrition and Feeding Research Unit at INRA/INA P-G, president of AFZ and a member of the expert committee on Animal Feeding at AFSSA. Jean-Marc Perez is deputy director of the Animal Physiology and Livestock Systems Department at INRA and scientific director of the journal INRA Productions Animales. Gilles Tran is the French Feed Database project manager at AFZ.

Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to provide a scientific-based, multidisciplinary perspective to the dialogue between society and the stakeholders within livestock production. Concerns and problems related to food safety, animal welfare and rural environment are discussed within a holistic approach. This unique approach has an added-value compared to other books which cover these topics from a specialist point of view. The different issues are developed by well-known experts in their field of work. They are dealing with the latest developments in livestock production in relation to social concerns (such as, regulations, risk communication, reduction of environmental impact, sustainability and economic and social impacts of alternative strategies) and production systems (including transport and slaughter, feeding strategies, waste management and future monitoring technology).Readers from various disciplines will find these ideas useful and complimentary to their own expertise, and may apply them to decision making, vocational training and other educational applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition 1989 focuses on the compositions of animal feeds. The book first discusses legislation and its implication for the feed compounder, including marketing of feeds, medicated feeds, and feed additives. The text highlights residues of veterinary drugs in animal products. Licensing of veterinary products; assessment of the safety of veterinary medicines; and development of performance-enhancing drugs are discussed. The book also looks at the vitamin requirements and allowances for poultry; effect of pellet quality on the performance of meat birds; and nutrition of rabbits. The text then discusses the prediction of the nutritive value of silage. History of silage energy evaluation; energy prediction and energy prediction relationships; and nutrient response based systems of rationing are described. The book focuses also on the effect of silage additives and wilting on animal performance; optimizing compound feed use in dairy cows with high intakes of silage; and nutrition of lambs. The text then looks at amino acid nutrition of pigs and poultry and etiology of diarrhea in pigs and pre-ruminants. The selection is vital for readers interested in conducting studies on the compositions of animal feeds.
