Book excerpt: This book updates the first edition for the status of knowledge in the physics of lake ice and the interactions between the ice cover and the liquid water underneath. Since the first edition was written in 2013, there has been a lot of progress in the field, in particular concerning environmental questions and the impact of climate change. Life conditions in ice-covered lakes and practical matters are now brought more into the picture so that the revision also properly serves as a handbook for applications. The author has worked widely with boreal lakes, polar lakes and Central Asian lakes that provides a wide geographical spectrum. Chapter 1 gives a brief overview and presents the research fields. The second chapter contains the classification of ice-covered lakes and observation techniques, especially remote sensing. In Chapter 3, the structure and properties of lake ice are presented including optics and geochemistry. Ice growth and melting are treated in Chapter 4, while the following chapter focuses on ice mechanics with applications to traffic on ice and ice loads. Chapter 6 goes into the exotic environment of pro-glacial lakes. Chapter 7 contains the stratification and circulation of the water body beneath lake ice, Chapter 8 presents the winter ecology of freezing lakes and discusses the lake ice interface toward the society, and Chapter 9 summarizes the climate change impact on lake ice seasons. The book ends into a brief closing chapter and list of references. Research problems for student learning are listed throughout the book. Annexes are included to provide numerical data of constants and standard formulae to help practical calculations and student tasks. Lake ice closely interacts with human living conditions, but people have learnt to live with that and to utilize the ice. In the present time this is true for on-ice traffic and recreation activities. Ice fishing has become a widely enjoyed hobby, and winter sports such as skiing, skating,and ice sailing are popular activities on frozen lakes. The lake ice response to eventual climate warming would appear as a shortening of the ice season due to the increasing air temperature and also as changing of the quality of the ice seasons via changes in ice thickness and structure. The book gives the whole story of lake ice into a single volume. The second, revised edition updates the content based on recent progress in winter limnology and ice physics research and applications. The author has contributed to lake ice research since the 1980s. In particular, his topics have been lake ice structure and thermodynamics, light transfer in ice and snow, ice mechanics in large lakes, and lake ice climatology. Mathematical modeling of ice growth, drift, and decay are covered in this research.

Book excerpt: A multiple-proxy investigation was undertaken on two short cores (85 cm and 101 cm long) from Kepler Lake, an evaporation-insensitive, groundwater-fed marl lake in South-Central Alaska, with the goal of reconstructing climate and environmental changes in recent centuries. The proxies employed in this study include: calcite Carbon-Oxygen isotopes, organic matter (OM) Carbon-Nitrogen isotopes, and loss on ignition (LOI) analysis. An 800-year chronology for two cores was established based on four calibrated AMS 14C dates on terrestrial macrofossils, 210Pb analysis and core-to-core correlations using LOI results. delta18O VPDB values of inorganic calcite range from -17.0 & permil; to -15.7 & permil;, with the highest values occurring during the period of 1450 to 1850 AD, a time coeval to the Little Ice Age (LIA). The high delta18O values during the cold LIA contrast with the conventional temperature interpretation using O isotopes and are interpreted to reflect a shift in atmospheric circulation. A weakening of the wintertime Aleutian Low (AL) pressure system residing over the Gulf of Alaska would result in 18O-enriched winter precipitation as well as a colder winter climate in SC Alaska during the LIA. We propose that elevated CaCO3 contents of>80% during the LIA reflect enhanced seasonality (warmer summer and colder winter), as calcite precipitation in freshwater lakes is primarily a function of peak summer temperature. This interpretation is also supported by high delta13C values, likely reflecting high aquatic productivity. The enhanced seasonality during the LIA may explain some complex moisture and temperature changes inferred from studies of glacier, lake and tree-ring records. Since 1850 an increase of 6 & permil; in delta15N from ca. +2 & permil; to +8.0 & permil; is interpreted to be caused by atmospheric transport of 15N enriched N-containing pollutants to the lake since the European Industrial Revolution. Through the use of multiple proxies complex relationships between climate change (shifts in the strength and/or position of the AL) and anthropogenic change (atmospheric deposition of nitrogen) can be examined in the context of aquatic ecosystems in order to yield a more complete understanding of paleo-environmental change during the late Holocene.

Chapter 2 quantifies world energy use in the 20th and 21st centuries. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 relate to energy required in heating the Earth's atmosphere, water, and to melt all the planet's ice, respectively. Chapter 6 covers sea level rise as ice melts.(Final level and time to reach it) Chapter 7 diverges from ordinary GW topics. There I estimate the energy stored in the Earth's 2 metal cores, 1 solid and 1 liquid. Furthermore, in the lower mantel is stored more than in the 2 metal cores, and in the upper mantel there is a similar amount. This means that more than 2/3 of the internal heat is stored in the mantels. Its thermal interaction with the surface is very significant. In Chapters 8, 9, and 10 I present a different theory of global warming incorporating Earth's interior energy. In Chapter 8 there is a 400,000-year graph showing climate history as it pertains to CO2 (carbon dioxide) concentration and temperature. The new theory is strongly supported by the close connection between the two, especially during GW. Chapter 9 shows a massive increase in worldwide flooding over the last 22 years. Chapter 10 discusses more aspects of the graphs presented in chapter 7. It connects flood data of Chapter 9 with the new theory. Chapter 11 compares climatic numbers with very large numbers in common use. Chapter 12 addresses climate control. Chapter 13 covers some odds and ends not yet discussed, but that may be among people's concerns. Some very different ways of looking at GW concepts are stated. Chapter 14 is the conclusion, which briefly summarizes the new theory. It offers a solution to reduce greatly or stop our contribution to global warming.
