But when the fearsome warrior known as the Beast of Wedderburn storms her gates, she finds herself, once again, forced to wed a stranger. Book excerpt: LONGLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE 'An incredible work of scholarship' Sathnam Sanghera Through the story of his own family’s history as slave and plantation owners, Alex Renton looks at how we owe it to the present to understand the legacy of the past. When British Caribbean slavery was abolished across most of the British Empire in 1833, it was not the newly liberated who received compensation, but the tens of thousands of enslavers who were paid millions of pounds in government money. The descendants of some of those slave owners are among the wealthiest and most powerful people in Britain today. Blood Legacy explores what inheritance – political, economic, moral and spiritual – has been passed to the descendants of the slave owners and the descendants of the enslaved. He also asks, crucially, how the former – himself among them – can begin to make reparations for the past.

It is a horrifying study of obsession in which a Glasgow merchant victimizes his family members one by one. "No doubt, Laird", replied Claud, "but it's a comfort to hae a frugal woman for a helpmate; but ye ken now-a-days it's no the fashion for bare legs to come thegither. The wife maun hae something to put in the pot as well as the man. And, although Miss Girzy may na be a'thegither objectionable, yet it would still be a pleasant thing baith to hersel and the man that gets her, an ye would just gie a bit inkling o what she'll hae."

Laird acted to mitigate the adverse effects of the Vietnam War on the department and to prepare the nation's armed forces for the future. Foremost was the transition from a conscripted military to an all-volunteer force, a fundamental policy shift that ended an unpopular and inequitable draft system."--from jacket.

Book excerpt: What would you do when duty and desire collide? Long ago, Kenzie McPhee was in love. She was to marry Arran, the eldest son of the McCaskills, and bring peace to their clans forevermore. Only fate had other ideas... Instead of peace, the two clans fell into a bloody feud. At the height of the conflict, Kenzie was spirited away to begin a new life far to the south, and after many years, the scars of her childhood faded into distant memory. Until a letter arrives, containing an offer of peace between their families; a proposition that can only be sealed by marrying the now Laird Arran McCaskill... the very man she'd spent a lifetime trying to forget. A second chance at love, or an opening of old wounds? Blaine McCaskill, brother to the Laird, has grown into a respected soldier, wrapped in his precious duty. It's a far cry from his youth, where he juggled the demands of a brutal father with a secret, unrequited love for Kenzie McPhee. So now, when he is ordered by the Laird to escort Kenzie home for the wedding, Blaine must enter a different type of battlefield, where the only enemy is himself - and the stakes are higher than he's ever known - to ensure the fragile peace is preserved. But with the backdrop of a greater war threatening to engulf the entire Highlands, will Blaine and Kenzie do their duty, or will a forbidden desire risk more than they could possibly imagine? A Promise to Be Kept is a HEA historical romance of 90,000 words, set in the Scottish Highlands. It's an exploration of love set amidst war, hope, and circumstance.

Book excerpt: "...considerably more wit and pizazz than the legendary Georgette [Heyer] herself.” —Kirkus Reviews The eligible but aloof Lord Marchmont seems as determined to remain single as his sister, Lady Emilia, is to see him wed. They are surrounded by a glimmering cast of characters, from the unreliable but dashing rake Jeffery de Guere to the lovely and shy Miss Amy Lewis. And, of course, the Stanbroke girls: Lady Isabella, romantic and dreamy, yet surprisingly practical, and Lady Elizabeth, her older sister, a heroine of great sense and wit as well as beauty. As these characters dance, court, conspire, love, and chase their way through some of the most fashionable spots of England and the continent, we join their elegant circle for the sparkling, sophisticated romp. As always, Fiona Hill brings a fresh and engaging liveliness to the world of Regency manners, making The Stanbroke Girls a triumphant delight to read.

Born into to a working class Chicago family, he turned his innate mechanical abilities and fascination with flight into a career that put him at the top of aviation's pioneers. As early as 1915, he was flying a home-made biplane in exhibitions; and in 1919 he set up shop in Wichita, building the Laird Swallow, America's first commercial aircraft. After moving back to Chicago, he designed and manufactured the LC-R Speedwing series of planes. Laird's planes were high-quality machines which were renowned for their speed. In 1930 and 1931, he built the Solution and Super Solution race planes, flown by Charles 'Speed' Holman and Jimmy Doolittle, respectively. Solution won the Thompson Trophy in 1930, and Super Solution won the first Bendix cross-country race in a record-setting time of less than 12 hours. In this profusely illustrated book, Ed Phillips covers Laird's career, the work of the E M Laird Aircraft Company and the record-setting planes that were produced. It is a fascinating look at the early days of commercial aviation and air racing in the United States and it gives Laird and the aircraft he built, the prominence they deserve

The elders impose one stipulation―that he takes a wife. He is given the choice to marry one of six lasses from the most prominent clans in the north. As he courts the lasses, he realizes the one woman who ignites his passion is forbidden to him. Marren Macleod gave her heart to Keith long ago. When he returns home, her desire for him deepens, especially when his kisses spark her unbridled passion. As Marren tries to win Keith’s affection, secrets come to light as to why she was sent to his clan for fostering. She is furious to learn she’s nothing but a pawn, going from one laird to another in their game of alliances and enemies. To prevent marriage to her guardian’s choice, Marren must force her betrothed to break the agreement set by his father. At first, Keith wholeheartedly courts the lasses, but then mysterious happenings occur. Some lasses fall ill and some flee his castle in fear they have been hexed. He refuses to name the lass he intends to marry and delays his nuptials, much to the chagrin of his clan. With seven lasses at his disposal, one laird should be able to find a woman likable enough to marry. If only he might win the heart of the woman he most desires and put behind him the family discord that could be his undoing.

This book was released on 2008-11-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gypsies and the British Imagination, 1807-1930, is the first book to explore fully the British obsession with Gypsies throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Deborah Epstein Nord traces various representations of Gypsies in the works of such well-known British authors John Clare, Walter Scott, William Wordsworth, George Eliot, Arthur Conan Doyle, and D. H. Lawrence. Nord also exhumes lesser-known literary, ethnographic, and historical texts, exploring the fascinating histories of nomadic writer George Borrow, the Gypsy Lore Society, Dora Yates, and other rarely examined figures and institutions. Gypsies were both idealized and reviled by Victorian and early-twentieth-century Britons. Associated with primitive desires, lawlessness, cunning, and sexual excess, Gypsies were also objects of antiquarian, literary, and anthropological interest. As Nord demonstrates, British writers and artists drew on Gypsy characters and plots to redefine and reconstruct cultural and racial difference, national and personal identity, and the individual's relationship to social and sexual orthodoxies. Gypsies were long associated with pastoral conventions and, in the nineteenth century, came to stand in for the ancient British past. Using myths of switched babies, Gypsy kidnappings, and the Gypsies' murky origins, authors projected onto Gypsies their own desires to escape convention and their anxieties about the ambiguities of identity. The literary representations that Nord examines have their roots in the interplay between the notion of Gypsies as a separate, often despised race and the psychic or aesthetic desire to dissolve the boundary between English and Gypsy worlds. By the beginning of the twentieth century, she argues, romantic identification with Gypsies had hardened into caricature-a phenomenon reflected in D. H. Lawrence's The Virgin and the Gipsy-and thoroughly obscured the reality of Gypsy life and history.
