Book Synopsis The 25 Most Influential Aircraft of All Time by : Walter Boyne
Download or read book The 25 Most Influential Aircraft of All Time written by Walter Boyne and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 25 Most Influential Aircraft of All Time conveys the fascinating progression of flying technology from flimsy wood-and-fabric biplanes to thunderous supersonic wonders. Aviation’s most historically relevant and arguably most influential aircraft – planes like the elliptical-winged Spitfire, the blisteringly-fast X-15, and the ubiquitous Learjet – are dramatically showcased in individual chapters. Factors like performance, price, operational efficiency, and perceptions in popular culture are examined. People are just as important as hardware in the discussion of the world’s greatest aircraft. The larger-than-life characters who designed and built these aeronautical marvels – men like the reclusive Howard Hughes and the demanding Clarence “Kelly” Johnson – are an indispensable part of the story. So, too, are the fearless pilots like Charles Lindbergh and Chuck Yeager who gave life to the shining examples of a new and dynamic industry. The authors have flown or flown in many of the featured aircraft and they knew many of the luminous personalities involved, enabling them to share unique perspectives. The preface is written by William Lloyd Stearman, a former staff member of the National Security Council and the son of famed industry engineer Lloyd Stearman. The introduction is written by Norman R. Augustine, the retired Chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation. The foreword is written by Burt Rutan, the renowned aircraft designer and founder of Scaled Composites. Each aircraft is magnificently illustrated in color, mostly with paintings by leading aviation artists.

Book Synopsis The Planes of Wichita by : Daryl Murphy
Download or read book The Planes of Wichita written by Daryl Murphy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than eight decades, Wichita, Kansas has been recognized as the world's Air Capital, and there doesn't seem to be any other city that can make that claim. More than half of all the airplanes in the world were built in this prairie town of 360,000. Three elements drew early builders-weather, workers and wampum. Three hundred days of good flying weather can be guaranteed; a work force with experience learned on the farm on in the oil patch was on hand; and plenty of cash was available. Of the literally scores of airplane companies that called Wichita home over the years, today's survivors dominate the worldwide General Aviation market. The Planes of Wichita is a collection of thumbnail sketches that tell the stories that contributed to the legend.

Book Synopsis Entrepreneurial Success and Failure in the Aviation Industry by : Howard G. Jones
Download or read book Entrepreneurial Success and Failure in the Aviation Industry written by Howard G. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation shows how the history of the Waco Aircraft Company reflects the transformation of the American economy in the twentieth century. Beginning just after the First World War, its entrepreneur, Clayton J. Brukner, developed a network of relationships within the aviation industry. This allowed his company to develop significant competitive advantages in the private flying market. Those advantages and the popular appeal of aviation helped Waco to become the largest manufacturer of civilian aircraft by 1929. The transformation of business-government relations during the New Deal demanded changes in Brukner's business strategy. The depression significantly cut sales of its popular biplanes, but Waco kept its Troy, Ohio, factory open and earned some profits during the downturn. Brukner's involvement with the trade associations in the 1930s revealed the critical role the government, the military in particular, played in the development of aviation. His flawed leadership in the changing context led to decisions that degraded the quality of its network signals and diminished Waco's effectiveness in crafting appropriate policies. As the international situation grew increasingly tense throughout the 1930s, Waco, like other manufacturers, turned to exports to enhance sales. Contracts with foreign governments partially offset the setback the depression had caused domestically. They did not, however, drive Brukner to evaluate sufficiently Waco's potential participation in the U.S. military market. Only after the Munich Crisis in September 1938, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to call for increased military spending, did the Waco Aircraft Company position itself to receive defense contracts. It was almost three years, however, before the Army Air Forces directed the company to design and manufacture transport aircraft and cargo gliders. In the meantime Brukner had not developed the organizational capabilities needed to manage military contracts.
