In 1857, Birks was hired as a clerk at Savage and Lyman in Montreal, reputed to be the finest jeweller and watchmaker in the Province of Canada at that time. Although Birks eventually became a partner in the firm in 1868, the company's later financial difficulties encouraged Birks to leave in 1877 With an investment of C$3000, Birks opened his own small jewellery shop in 1879 on Saint Jacques Street in the heart of Montreal's financial and commercial district. In 1893, Birks went into partnership with his three sons (William, John and Gerald), and the name of the firm became Henry Birks and Sons.

Jack and Sulamith Potter examine the revolutionary experiences of Zengbu's peasant villagers and document the rapid changeover from Maoist to post-Maoist China. In particular, they seek to explain the persistence of the deep structure of Chinese culture through thirty years of revolutionary praxis. The authors assess the continuities and changes in rural China, moving from the traditional social organization and cultural life of the pre-revolutionary period through the series of large-scale efforts to implement planned social change which characterized Maoism - land reform, collectivization, the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. From 1975 to 1977, I went to Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville. From 1977 to 1980, I attended Virginia State University in Petersburg. I earned my BA and MA degrees. I studied above a master's at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville from 1980 to 1983. I did not graduate, but I learned valuable life lessons. I started to write in 1993 about what had happened to me over the years and how I used my dire circumstances as motivation to pick myself up and make my life better. I hope I am an example that will help others who are suffering through similar atrocities to be motivated to not give up but persevere and that they will, as I did, overcome anything they are being faced with.
