Book excerpt: As Rose Bach's saga continued in Book 2, I imagined she would wilt under continuing pressures. Yet, the author evolved Rose into a 'universal person' challenging life's difficulties. Even through her weaknesses and failings, she remained a classical female warrior. I thank Mr. Zidbeck for revealing such a vital person; he balanced well the use of dialog within the documentary format. -S. Richard Snodey, PE, LLB, PhD.; International Business Counselor Lady Gemini, Book 2 is the equal of Book 1. The main character, Rose Bach, is developed with such meticulous detail that you'll feel she's actually living on the book's pages right before your eyes. Her shadows and her trials lingered in my mind, haunted me is more precise, long after I closed the back cover of the book. The reader is in for a read that's intense, moving, and thought provoking. -Phillip Stein, Chief of Operations, Ret., L.A. County Probation Dept. I really got into the character, Rose. Her travails kept me reading 'one more page.' Part two of her story offers the compelling tale of a courageous, young Panamanian woman cast adrift in rural, Southern California during the mid Twentieth Century. -Carlos Ledson Miller, Author of Panama; Belize; and Stroke Rose Bach's journey-down the many byways introduced in Book 1-revealed her search for her destiny against impossible odds. After reading the first half of her story, I wondered, as a recovering alcoholic, whether she would at least break even. Book 2 allowed me to witness her final struggles before she settled on the final hand. -Ron P.

Zidbeck is the author of a six-volume collection of stories focusing on family dysfunction as a result of parental alcoholismcreative fiction based on the true events of his life. In Observations and Reflections of a Country Squire, Zidbeck recounts his life story and considers the lasting effects of his early years on the rest of his life. After spending those early years in the American Canal Zone in Panama occasionally getting into trouble, he found himself moving to California with his mother and siblings in an attempt to start a new life after his father left to join the Merchant Marines. As a teenager, Zidbeck continued to learn some things the hard way when it came to growing up, enlisting in the US Army at the age of seventeen. He served during the Korean War, was hospitalized for hepatitis, and was then honorably discharged in October 1952, thus beginning his life as a free man in Long Beach, California. Thereafter his life required constant adjustment from his earlier ways, presenting challenges of paying the bills, finding love, and trying to decide what he truly wanted for his future. In this memoir, one man offers a candid description and exploration of the events of his life, reflecting on the many changes and bumps in the road over the years.

Book excerpt: "The reading of Lady Gemini, Book 1, delighted me. Mr. Zidbeck uniquely and intimately morphs a young girl into a mature woman who faces and survives special challenges. Her progression from child to wife to mother tantalizes the reader by presenting events starkly and frankly; or with delayed revelations. As Rose evolves along her poignant journey, she rises through ever higher levels of rejection and setbacks. While heroic at all times, she can not forever disguise her vulnerability. I eagerly await Book 2. Will Rose persevere or falter?" -S. Richard Snodey, PE LLB Ph D, International Commercial Arbitrator "George Zidbeck gives us a gripping tale of a young woman who, trapped by culture and circumstances, endures a loveless marriage and a life unfulfilled. As he takes us along her journey from a naive teenager to a mature adult, we admire her perseverance. The way that she copes with her loneliness, her husband's alcoholism, her increasing use of alcohol, and their infidelities leaves the reader hungry to see what happens in Book 2 of Lady Gemini. This is a riveting read!" -Philip Stein, Chief of Operations, Ret., L.A. County Probation Department "George Zidbeck's first novel is a fascinating family saga that captures life in Panama during the mid 20th Century. Populated by compelling characters and told from an insider's perspective, this novel offers a nuanced view of the contrasting cultures and landscapes that existed in the Republic of Panama and the American Canal Zone." -Carlos Ledson Miller, Author of Panama; Belize; and Stroke "As a recovering alcoholic, I 'watched' the dark shade of alcoholism descend inexorably into Lady Gemini's life. The author led me through a labyrinth of the protagonist's hopes and dreams from her childhood on I witnessed Rose displaying an indomitable will as she struggled against impossible odds. We are left to discover in Book 2 if she at least breaks even." -Ron P.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Alyse Knorr's MEGA-CITY REDUX is a marvel. In 1405, Christine de Pizan, the world's first female professional writer, published an allegorical work called The Book of the City of Ladies, in which she imagined constructing (with the help of her fairy godmothers Reason, Rectitude, and Justice) a walled city where women could live safe from sexism, misogyny, and gendered violence. Six hundred years later, women across the world still find themselves in need of such a city. MEGA-CITY REDUX, a novel in verse remix of Pizan's allegory, charts a modern-day road-trip search for the mythical city, with the help of 21st- century feminist heroes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Xena Warrior Princess, and Dana Scully from The X-Files.

The books look at the function and background of prose fiction, focusing its arguments around the study of carefully selected books that have had a significant impact on its development. The author examines the progress in the long struggle of the novelist to see life steadily and whole, and points out some of the problems and hazards that beset the writer still.

The first work of its kind, this encyclopedia approaches African American literature from a Women's Studies perspective. While Yolanda Williams Page's Encyclopedia of African American Women Writers provides biographical entries on more than 150 literary figures, this book is much broader in scope. Included are several hundred alphabetically arranged entries on African American women writers, as well as on male writers who have treated women in their works. Entries on genres, periods, themes, characters, historical events, texts, places, and other topics are included as well. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and relates its subject to the overall experience of women in African American literature. Entries cite works for further reading, and the encyclopedia closes with a selected, general bibliography. African American culture is enormously diverse, and the experience of women in African American society is especially complex. Women were among the first African American writers, and works by black women writers are popular among students and general readers alike. At the same time, African American women have been oppressed, and texts by black male authors represent women in a variety of ways. The first of its kind, this encyclopedia approaches African American literature from a Women's Studies perspective, and thus significantly illuminates the African American cultural experience through literary works. Included are several hundred alphabetically arranged entries, written by numerous expert contributors. In addition to covering male and female African American authors, the encyclopedia also discusses themes, major works and characters, genres, periods, historical events, places, and other topics. Included are entries on such authors as: ; Maya Angelou ; James Baldwin ; Frederick Douglass ; Nikki Giovanni ; June Jordan ; Claude McKay ; Ishmael Reed ; Sojourner Truth ; Phillis Wheatley ; And many others. In addition, the many works discussed include: ; Beloved ; Blanche on the Lam ; Iknow Why the Caged Bird Sings ; The Men of Brewster Place ; Quicksand ; The Street ; Waiting to Exhale ; And many more. The many topical entries cover: ; Black Feminism ; Black Nationalism ; Conjuring ; Children's and Young Adult Literature ; Detective Fiction ; Epistolary Novel ; Motherhood ; Sexuality ; Spirituality ; Stereotypes ; And many others. Entries relate their topics to the experience of African American women and cite works for further reading. Features and Benefits: ; Includes hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries. ; Draws on the work of numerous expert contributors. ; Includes a selected, general bibliography. ; Offers a range of finding aids, such as a list of entries, a guide to related topics, and an extensive index. ; Supports the literature curriculum by helping students analyze major writers and works. ; Supports the social studies curriculum by helping students use literature to understand the experience of African American women. ; Covers the full chronological range of African American literature. ; Fosters a respect for cultural diversity. ; Develops research skills by directing students to additional sources of information. ; Builds bridges between African American history, literature, and Women's Studies.

Book excerpt: The book Lady Astronauts, Lady Engineers, and Naked Ladies is a gender history of the American space community and by extension a social history of American society in the twentieth century during the Cold War. In order to expand and differentiate the prevalent postwar narrative about gender relations and cultural structures in the United States, the book analyzes several different groups of women interacting in different social spaces within the space community. It therewith grants insight into the several layers of female participation and agency in the community and the gender and race based obstacles and hurdles the female (prospective) astronauts, scientists, engineers, artists, administrators, writers, hostesses, secretaries, and wives were faced with at NASA and in the space industry. In each chapter a different social space within the space community is analyzed. The spaces where the women lived and worked are researched from a media, individual, and institutional angle, ultimately revealing the differing gender philosophies communicated in the public sphere and the space community workplaces by government and space community officials. While women were publicly encouraged to participate in the American space effort to beat the Soviet Union in the race to the moon, women had to deal with gender based barriers which were integral to the structures of the space community; just as they were an intrinsic component of all societal structures in the United States in the 1960s. The female space workers, who were often perceived as disrupters of the prevalent social order in the space community and discriminated by some of their male colleagues and bosses on a personal basis, still managed to assert themselves. They molded pockets of agency in the space community workspaces without the facilitation of regulations on the part of NASA that might have provided them with easier access or more agency. Thus, the space community, a place of technological innovation, was not necessarily also a place of social innovation, but a community with a government agency at its center that mainly mirrored the current (changing) social order, conventions, and policies in the 1960s as well as in the 1970s and 1980s. Nevertheless, the women presented in this book were instrumental in advancing and consolidating the social transformation that happened within the space community and the United States and therefore make intriguing subjects of research. Thus, this systematic analysis of the connection between gender, space, and the Cold War adds a new dimension to space history as well as expands the discourse in American history about gender relations and the opportunities of women in the twentieth century.
