Book excerpt: In simulation tests of dynamic states of the power system (PS), the database of parameters of mathematical models of generating units is most commonly used. In many cases, the parameter values are burdened with large errors. Consequently, the results obtained are not reliable and do not allow drawing true conclusions. This monograph presents the developed methods and tools supporting the process of measurement determination of reliable values of parameters of mathematical models of synchronous generators and excitation systems. Special measurement tests are the basis for determining the parameters. The tests can be carried out in conditions of normal operation of generating units, in which electrical machines operate in the state of saturation of magnetic cores, and voltage regulators can reach limits. This book is intended for specialists in power engineering as well as students of faculties of electrical engineering interested in issues of PS transient states.

After surveying the current developments taking place in the field of medical applications of lasers, it was considered appropriate to bring together these efforts of international research scientists and experts into one volume. It is with this aim that the editors have prepared this volume which brings current research and recent developments to the attention of a wide spectrum of readership associated with hospitals, medical institutions and universities world wide, including also the medical instrument industry. Both teachers and students in the medical faculties will especially find this compendium quite useful. This book is comprised of eleven chapters. All of the important medical applications of lasers are featured. The editors have made every effort that individual chapters are self-contained and written by experts. Emphasis has been placed on straight and simple presentation of the subject matter so that even the new entrants into the field will find the book of value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performing any diagnostic test in medicine is always a matter of trying to get the condition of the patient diagnosed properly with the least effort, exposure, discomfort and at the same time with the lowest possible error probability. Pre-test probability is helpful but often imprecise, effectively overestimating the patient's risk profile. In a broader prevention objective, the phases of a disease, its onset, progression, and complications must be taken into account. The negative predictive value, which is so important, has in turn its main limitation in identifying the healthy patient, that is, the one who does not belong to any cluster of patients in which we would act in terms of prevention. In coronary syndromes, the goal is instead to evaluate coronary heart disease, from mild to more extensive and significant forms. For this purpose, it is necessary to use parameters that investigate different and complementary aspects: stenosis, ischemia, the morphology of the atherosclerotic plaque, metabolic processes, in particular vitality and apoptosis, the presence of inflammatory processes. The possibility, already present thanks to Hybrid Imaging, of 'joining’ exams that study different aspects, will allow the patient to be increasingly characterized not only from a diagnostic point of view but also from a prognostic and personalized therapeutic choice.
