Download or read book Enzymes written by T Palmer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-04-04 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there have been considerable developments in techniques for the investigation and utilisation of enzymes. With the assistance of a co-author, this popular student textbook has been updated to include techniques such as membrane chromatography, aqueous phase partitioning, engineering recombinant proteins for purification and due to the rapid advances in bioinformatics/proteomics, a discussion of the analysis of complex protein mixtures by 2D-electrophoresis and RPHPLC prior to sequencing by mass spectroscopy. Written with the student firmly in mind, no previous knowledge of biochemistry, and little of chemistry, is assumed. It is intended to provide an introduction to enzymology, and a balanced account of all the various theoretical and applied aspects of the subject which are likely to be included in a course. - Provides an introduction to enzymology and a balanced account of the theoretical and applied aspects of the subject - Discusses techniques such as membrane chromatography, aqueous phase partitioning and engineering recombinant proteins for purification - Includes a discussion of the analysis of complex protein mixtures by 2D-electrophoresis and RPHPLC prior to sequencing by mass spectroscopy
Book Synopsis Lactose Synthesis by : Lorena Mardones
Download or read book Lactose Synthesis written by Lorena Mardones and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter is related to lactose synthesis, its chemistry, regulation, and differences between species, especially in cattle. Lactose synthesis takes place in the Golgi apparatus of mammary epithelial cells (MEC) by the lactose synthase (LS) enzyme complex from two precursors, glucose and UDP-galactose. The enzyme complex is formed by galactosyltransferase, and it is associated with α-lactalbumin. Importantly, the lactose secreted determines the volume of milk produced, due to its osmotic properties. Milk contains 5% lactose and 80% water, percentages that remain constant during lactation in the different mammalian species. The low variation in milk lactose content indicates that lactose synthesis remains constant throughout the period of lactation and that is highly conserved in all mammals. Lactose synthesis is initiated during the first third of the pregnancy, increasing after birth and placenta removal. Different glucose transporters have been involved in mammary glucose uptake, mainly facilitative glucose transporters GLUT1, GLUT8, and GLUT12 and sodium-glucose transporter SGLT1, with more or less participation depending on mammal species.
Book Synopsis Lactose and Lactose Derivatives by : Néstor Gutiérrez-Méndez
Download or read book Lactose and Lactose Derivatives written by Néstor Gutiérrez-Méndez and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lactose is a unique disaccharide found exclusively in the milk of mammals. This sugar has a crucial role in nourishing newborn and young mammals; however, some adults have difficulties in fully metabolizing lactose. Despite lactose intolerance in the population, the dairy industry produces 400,000 tons of crystalline lactose worldwide. The food and pharmaceutical industries use lactose as well as lactose derivatives in a wide variety of products. This book reviews some aspects of lactose properties and synthesis as well as recent advances in the recovery of lactose and lactose derivatives from cheese whey.
Book Synopsis Lactation and the Mammary Gland by : R. Michael Akers
Download or read book Lactation and the Mammary Gland written by R. Michael Akers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-02-10 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Akers provides the basics for understanding mammary development and lactation and conveys the critical regulatory events in lactation. This text willl prove to be an invaluable overview of mamorary development and lactation for undergraduates and graduates studying lactation, new researchers, and as a review for established scientists. Additionally, the book will be an important resource for professionals in the animal and dairy industry and for those in other scientific disciplines such as food chemistry, cell biology, and endocrinology whose work is closely tied to mammary gland development and function. Lactation and the Mammary Gland covers growth and development of the mammary gland including comparisons between species. It imparts and emphasizes the critical nature of mammary growth and the onset of lactation at the time of parturition. Special emphasis is given to the endocrine and growth factor regulation of both mammogenesis and lactogenesis. A thorough discussion of the role of growth hormone in development and maintenance of lactation or galactopoiesis adds to this book's value as a text and reference. The author reviews the presence of hormones, growth factors, and other bioactive compounds in milk and mammary secretions as well as the potential for use of the mammary gland as a bioreactor in the pharmaceutical industry. A description of the nutritional and management factors in milk production round out the book's comprehensive coverage.

Book Synopsis The Mammary Gland / Human Lactation / Milk Synthesis by : Bruce L. Larson
Download or read book The Mammary Gland / Human Lactation / Milk Synthesis written by Bruce L. Larson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lactation: A Comprehensive Treatise, Volume IV, The Mammary Gland/Human Lactation/Milk Synthesis, forms the fourth in a series. When the first three volumes were published in 1974, publication of future volumes was not contemplated. However, the gratifying acceptance by the scientific community and the continuation of rapid advances in lactation, have provided the impetus for the continuation of the series. The present volume is concerned with general aspects of the mammary gland, human lactation, and mechanisms of milk synthesis. The volume is divided into three main parts. Part I covers some aspects of the mammary gland and lactation not discussed in the first three volumes and expands on others. Topics discussed include the development of the mammary apparatus and neuroendocrine control of lactation. Part II is devoted to more specific consideration of human lactation as a whole. It includes studies on breast feeding and the breast cancer process. Part III on milk synthesis deals with the mechanisms of milk synthesis; enzymology and control of lactose biosynthesis; molecular aspects of milk protein biosynthesis; and ion and water transport in the mammary gland.
