Book excerpt: Lacertid lizards have long been a fruitful field of scientific enquiry with many people working on them over the past couple of hundred years. The scope of the field has steadily increased, beginning with taxonomy and anatomy and gradually spreading so that it includes such topics as phylogenetics, behaviour, ecology, and conservation. Since 1992, a series of symposia on lacertid lizards of the Mediterranean basin have taken place every three years. The present volume stems from the 2004 meeting in the Aeolian Islands. In the volume a wide range of island topics are considered, including the systematics of the species concerned, from both morphological and molecular viewpoints, interaction with other taxa, and conservation. The last topic is especially important, as island lizards across the world have often been vulnerable to extinction, after they came into contact with people and the animals they introduced. The volume also has papers on the more positive aspects of human influence, specifically the benign effects of traditional agriculture on at least some reptile species. Olive trees, cork oaks and the banks and walls of loose rocks that crisscross the Mediterranean scene all often contribute to elevated lizard populations. Nor is more basic biology neglected and there are articles on morphology, reproduction, development and thermoregulation. Finally, it is good to see one paper on non-Mediterranean species is included. For, to fully understand the lacertids of this region, it is necessary to appreciate their close relatives in Africa, Asia and the archipelagos of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. (From Preface by E. Nicholas Arnold & Wolfgang Böhme).

Download or read book Fifth international Symposium on the lacertids of the Mediterranean Basin written by Pietro Lo Cascio and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume collects the contributions to the Fifth International Symposium on the Lacertids of the Mediterranean Basinheld on the island of Lipari between 7 and 11 May 2004. The study of the Mediterranean lacertid lizards represents a key point for understanding the mechanisms regulating the evolution of the Mediterranean's ecosystems and in particular those ones related to islands. Conservation of biodiversity is the main target that such a knowledge significantly contributes to fulfil.

This book was released on 2007-09-07 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers exchanges between the fields of paleontology and zoology as patterns of biodiversity have long attracted the attention of both biologists and paleontologists. It covers the development of isolated island faunas, paleogeography and zoomorphology. The book shows that patterns are not always what they seem if looked at without a spatial or temporal reference.

Book excerpt: Herpetology, Second Edition has been thoroughly revised. The text has been reorganized, new chapters have been added, new text references have been inserted. All this plus new color systematics sections will maintain this book as THE leading textbook on the biology of amphibians and reptiles. The book will also showcase reptiles and amphibians as model systems in conceptual areas of biology. Such a text will help integrate herpetology as a discipline into conceptually oriented undergraduate programs. The book should also appeal to a large audience of sophisticated lay people interested in reptiles and amphibians. Written by internationally recognized experts on the biology of amphibians and reptiles Provides a general background on the evolution and morphology of amphibians and reptiles Details what is known about reproduction and life histories Examines physiological ecology, emphasizing water balance, temperature, and energy Integrates population and community ecology with conservation biology Provides detailed taxonomic accounts of all higher taxa, including high quality distribution maps and color photographs
Book Synopsis The Status and Distribution of Reptiles and Amphibians of the Mediterranean Basin by : Neil Cox
Download or read book The Status and Distribution of Reptiles and Amphibians of the Mediterranean Basin written by Neil Cox and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2006 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean-rim countries hold around 400 million people and 135 million of them live on the coast. A steady migration towards coastal areas, specifically in the south and east of the Mediterranean, is causing pressure on the coastal environment and, more importantly, on its biodiversity. In this second Mediterranean regional assessment, all the reptile and amphibian species existing within the region of study have been evaluated for their global conservation status. This assessment aims to assist in regional planning and to help identify internationally important sites for biodiversity. Like the first in the series, it also hopes to encourage development of a network of regional experts to enable future assessments and the continued updating of the baseline dataset.
