Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the complex and often contradictory relationships between agricultural production and markets, Labor, Markets, and Agricultural Production examines the micro-macro linkages between farm production, farm labor issues, and the degree of autonomy or dependency vis-Ã -vis markets. By comparing the case of farmers in Peru, generally regarded as peripheral agricultural producers, with that of European farmers able to easily access the centralized markets of the EEC, Dr. van der Ploeg is able to draw general conclusions about the ongoing process of commoditization of agriculture and the roles farmers play in agrarian development.

Book excerpt: A Practitioner's Guide to Stochastic Frontier Analysis Using Stata provides practitioners in academia and industry with a step-by-step guide on how to conduct efficiency analysis using the stochastic frontier approach. The authors explain in detail how to estimate production, cost, and profit efficiency and introduce the basic theory of each model in an accessible way, using empirical examples that demonstrate the interpretation and application of models. This book also provides computer code, allowing users to apply the models in their own work, and incorporates the most recent stochastic frontier models developed in academic literature. Such recent developments include models of heteroscedasticity and exogenous determinants of inefficiency, scaling models, panel models with time-varying inefficiency, growth models, and panel models that separate firm effects and persistent and transient inefficiency. Immensely helpful to applied researchers, this book bridges the chasm between theory and practice, expanding the range of applications in which production frontier analysis may be implemented.

Book excerpt: Dairy sector can play an important role in determining future prospects for the employment generation and poverty alleviation in the country. Since, earning reasonable profit has become a major yardstick for dairy farmers for taking decision about which type of dairy farm they should go with, this study would prove useful for policy makers. Keeping all these in view, the present study entitled "Economic Analysis of Rural and Periurban Dairy Farms in Ludhiana District of Punjab" has been undertaken with objectives to work out the cost of milk production and returns on rural and periurban dairy farms, to assess the labour employment on different dairy farms, to estimate the input-output relationship and resource-use efficiency in milk production, to study the breeding, feeding and health care management constraints faced and practices followed by the dairy farmers. To achieve the above objectives, 1 village and 1 periurban area each were randomly selected from 2 tehsils, which fell under Ludhiana district of Punjab with a sample of 40 (25 rural, 15 periurban) dairy farms selected randomly and data was collected for 3 seasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dairy industry is one of the most important and influential agricultural sector in New Zealand. Ensuring and enhancing the industry's productivity and efficiency represent a fundamental issue in New Zealand economic growth. September 2007, the NZ Labour Government proposed an Emission Trading Scheme as a way to comply with its Kyoto obligation, and it is the first country in the world that brings agricultural sector in. Given the emission intensive nature of dairy production, the industry is facing substantial increases in production costs and reduction in payout. The efficiency performance of dairy farming might also be affected as a result of changing farming practices. The overall objective of the thesis is to analyze the efficiency performance of NZ dairy farming, with implications regarding the climate change issue. Stochastic frontier analysis is applied to a panel of NZ dairy farms in 1998/99-2006/07. The structures of the existing production technology, technological change over time, and difference between South Island and North Island dairy farming are investigated within this stochastic frontier framework. An input efficiency measure is defined and evaluated at the expected cost minimizing input bundle. If the efficiency performance for emission intensive inputs could be improved, dairy farms will decrease their emissions without loss of production or additional costs. This input efficiency measure therefore allows for the combination of a farm's environmental pressure with its economic performance. Finally, the likely impacts of the ETS on dairy industry are discussed through an analysis regarding the point of obligation issue, and an illustration of changing farming practices when fertilizer price goes up as a result of emission charges.

Book excerpt: Mountain food security and nutrition are core issues that can contribute positively to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals but paradoxically are often ignored in Zero Hunger and poverty reduction-related agenda. Under the overall leadership of José Graziano da Silva, the Former Director-General of FAO, sustainable mountain agriculture development is set as a priority in Asia and the Pacific, to effectively address this issue and assist Member Countries in tackling food insecurity and malnutrition in mountain regions. This comprehensive publication is the first of its kind that focuses on the multidimensional status, challenges, opportunities and solutions of sustainable mountain agriculture development for Zero Hunger in Asia. This publication is building on the ‘International Workshop and Regional Expert Consultation on Mountain Agriculture Development and Food Security and Nutrition Governance’, held by FAO RAP and UIR in November 2018 Beijing, in collaboration with partners from national governments, national agriculture institutes, universities, international organizations and international research institutes. The publication provides analysis with evidence on how mountain agriculture could contribute to satisfying all four dimensions of food security, to transform food systems to be nutrition-sensitive, climate-resilient, economically-viable and locally adaptable. From this food system perspective, the priority should be given to focus on specialty mountain product identification (e.g. Future Smart Food), production, processing, marketing and consumption, which would effectively expose the potential of mountain agriculture to contribute to Zero Hunger and poverty reduction. In addition, eight Asian country case studies not only identify context-specific challenges within biophysical-technical, policy, socio-economic and institutional dimensions.
