High-resolution x-ray spectra from these sources measured by satellites such as the Chandra, XMN-Newton, the Solar Maximum Mission, and the soon-to-be-launched Astro-E2 provide a means for understanding the physics governing these sources. Especially rich is the x-ray emission from L-shell transitions in highly charged ions. The emissions is the source of a variety of diagnostics and benchmarked by laboratory data. In this paper we discuss laboratory measurements of Fe L-shell x-ray emission including wavelengths, relative and absolute excitation cross sections, and line ratios that provide diagnostics of temperature and density.

Book excerpt: The X-ray signature of charge exchange between highly charged L-shell iron ions and neutral gas atoms was studied in the laboratory in order to assess its diagnostic utility. Significant differences with spectra formed by electron-impact excitation were observed. In particular, a strong enhancement was found of the emission corresponding to n ≤ 4 → n = 2 transitions relative to the n = 3 → n = 2 emission. This enhancement was detectable even with relatively low-resolution X-ray instrumentation (E/[Delta]E ≈ 10) and may enable future identification of charge exchange as a line-formation mechanism in astrophysical spectra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new analytical technique for determining the oxidation state of crystalline or amorphous oxide films of the first series transition metals was developed. This technique makes use of the soft X-ray L emission spectra of these metals and their oxides. A detailed study was made of the wavelengths, intensities and band shapes and the changes which occur in them when going from pure metal to various states of oxidation. The dependence of the L-II/L-III intensity ratio an excitation potential, valence state and atomic number is also presented as are the optimum peak to background conditions. Results were obtained using a flat crystal vacuum spectrometer with electron excitation and an ultra-thin window flow proportional counter. Crystals used were gypsum, mica, potassium acid phthalate (KAP) and rubidium acid phthalate (RbAP) with AlK alpha sub 1, 2 and AlK alpha sub 3, alpha sub 4 satellite doublet from Al2O3 as wavelength standard. Book excerpt: We provide a discussion of the density and photoexcitation sensitivity of the X-ray spectra of Fe L-shell ions (Fe XVII-Fe XXIV) calculated with the Livermore X-ray Spectral Synthesizer, a suite of IDL codes that calculates spectral models of highly charged ions based primarily on HULLAC atomic data. These models are applicable to collisionally ionized laboratory or cosmic plasmas with electron temperatures T[sub e] [approx] 2-45 MK (0.2-4 keV) and electron densities n[sub e] [approx]> 10[sup 11] cm[sup -3]. Potentially useful density diagnostics are identified for Fe XVII and Fe XIX-Fe XXIII, with the most straightforward being the Fe XVII I(17.10 [angstrom])/I(17.05 [angstrom]) line ratio and the Fe XXII I(11.92 [angstrom])/I(11.77 [angstrom]) line ratio. Applying these models to the Chandra X-ray Observatory High Energy Transmission Grating spectrum of the intermediate polar EX Hya, we find that the strength of all the Fe L-shell lines are consistent with electron densities n[sub e] [approx]> 1 x 10[sup 14] cm[sup -3]. Specifically, from the observed Fe XVII I(17.10[angstrom])/I(17.05[angstrom]) line ratio, we infer an electron density n[sub e] [approx]> 2 x 10[sup 14] cm[sup -3] at the 3[sigma] level, while from the observed Fe XXII I(11.92 [angstrom])/I(11.77 [angstrom]) line ratio, we infer n[sub e] = 1.0[sub -0.5][sup +2.0] x 10[sup 14] cm[sup -3] at the 1[sigma] level and n[sub e] [approx]> 2 x 10[sup 13] cm[sup -3] at the 3[sigma] level.

The measurements include wavelengths, electron-impact collision cross sections, innershell ionization phenomena, dielectronic recombination resonance strengths, charge exchange recombination, electron beam polarization effects, resonance excitation, and radiative cascade contributions. K-shell spectra have now also been obtained with microcalorimeters, including microcalorimeter arrays that are twins of the ASTRO-E and ASTRO-E2 missions, which illustrate typical resolving powers and spectral capabilities.

Book excerpt: During the last two decades, remarkable and often spectacular progress has been made in the methodological and instrumental aspects of x–ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. This progress includes considerable technological improvements in the design and production of detectors especially with the development and expansion of large-scale synchrotron reactors All this has resulted in improved analytical performance and new applications, as well as in the perspective of a dramatic enhancement in the potential of x–ray based analysis techniques for the near future. This comprehensive two-volume treatise features articles that explain the phenomena and describe examples of X–ray absorption and emission applications in several fields, including chemistry, biochemistry, catalysis, amorphous and liquid systems, synchrotron radiation, and surface phenomena. Contributors explain the underlying theory, how to set up X–ray absorption experiments, and how to analyze the details of the resulting spectra. X-Ray Absorption and X-ray Emission Spectroscopy: Theory and Applications: Combines the theory, instrumentation and applications of x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies which offer unique diagnostics to study almost any object in the Universe. Is the go-to reference book in the subject for all researchers across multi-disciplines since intense beams from modern sources have revolutionized x-ray science in recent years Is relevant to students, postdocurates and researchers working on x-rays and related synchrotron sources and applications in materials, physics, medicine, environment/geology, and biomedical materials

Book excerpt: This open access book gives a complete and comprehensive introduction to the fields of medical imaging systems, as designed for a broad range of applications. The authors of the book first explain the foundations of system theory and image processing, before highlighting several modalities in a dedicated chapter. The initial focus is on modalities that are closely related to traditional camera systems such as endoscopy and microscopy. This is followed by more complex image formation processes: magnetic resonance imaging, X-ray projection imaging, computed tomography, X-ray phase-contrast imaging, nuclear imaging, ultrasound, and optical coherence tomography.

Book excerpt: The present decade is opening new frontiers in high-energy astrophysics. After the X-ray satellites in the 1980's, including Einstein, Tenma, EXOSAT and Ginga, several satellites are, or will soon be, simultaneously in orbit offering spectacular advances in X-ray imaging at low energies (ROSATj Yohkoh) as well as at high energies (GRANAT), in spectroscopy with increased bandwidth (ASCAj SAX), and in timing (XTE). While these satellites allow us to study atomic radiation from hot plasmas or energetic electrons, other satellites study nuclear radiation at gamma-ray energies (CGRO) associated with radioactivity or spallation reactions. These experiments show that the whole universe is emitting radiation at high energies, hence we call it the "hot universe. " The hot universe, preferentially emitting X- and gamma-rays, provides us with many surprises and much information. A symposium "The Hot Universe" was held in conjunction with the XXIIIrd General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, at Kyoto on August 26-30 in 1997. The proceedings are organized as follows. Synthetic view of "the hot universe" is discussed in Section 1, "Plasma and Fresh Nucleosynthesis Phenomena". Timely discussions on the strategy for future missions "Future Space Program" are found in Section 2. Then the contents are divided into two major subjects: the compact objects and thin hot diffuse plasmas. Section 3 is devoted to the category of compact objects which includes white dwarfs, neutron stars, and gravitationally collapsed objects: stellar mass black holes or active galactic nuclei.
