Book excerpt: We are pleased to put forth the revised edition of “Laboratory Manual of Social Pharmacy”. This manual is prepared as per the PCI Education Regulations, 2020 for Diploma in Pharmacy. This laboratory manual is intended to give broad knowledge of social pharmacy and the role of pharmacists in various health care services. The practicals included are the services provided by the government or private health care industries that are not known to the common public. This manual will create emphasis on that and make students think of it, search it, brainstorm it, and use this information to counsel the community. In addition, some of the experiments are on health and hygiene that help to prevent the various communicable diseases and maintain personal hygiene. Moreover, the role of pharmacist in various scenes is identified and communicated to the students, so the students are aware of it and demonstrate these skills to the society when necessary. We have incorporated all the suggestions, modified it to make it easier, student friendly and relevant in terms of achieving curriculum outcome. We are very much thankful to all the learned teachers who have given their feedback whole-heartedly. This manual is designed for 'outcome-based education' and each experiment is arranged in a uniform way such as practical significance, practical outcomes (PrOs) and its mapping with course outcomes, minimum theoretical background, resources used, procedure, precautions, observations, result, conclusion, references, and related questions. Moreover, assessment scheme is also given to help the student and teacher to know what to be assessed. This manual is a sincere effort to improve the community and social oriented skills in the pharmacy students. The students have to perform tasks in each experiment, like visiting the PHC, pharmacy, community pharmacy, hospital, searching on the WHO websites, etc., to make this manual interesting for the students and teachers. This manual asks the student to prepare various promotional materials of the health care services and hygienic care required to be taken by the society for a healthier and happier community life. We acknowledge the help and cooperation extended by various persons in bringing out this manual. We are highly indebted to the authors of various books and articles mentioned in references of each experiment, which became a major source of information for writing this manual. We also admire the publishers, designers, and printers who graciously worked hard to publish this manual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Diagnosis is not the end, but the beginning of practice”.—Martin H. Fischer Pediatric dentistry is a continuous evolving field like any other fields of dentistry. Children are not miniature adults, and their growth and developmental considerations demand special attention in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of diseases. Taking a history from a patient is a skill necessary for examinations and afterwards as a practicing doctor, no matter which area you specialize in. It tests both your communication skills as well as your knowledge about what to ask. Specific questions vary depending on what type of history you are taking but if you follow the general framework below you should gain good marks in these stations. This is also a good way to present your history. A good history is one which reveals the patient’s ideas, concerns and expectations as well as any accompanying diagnosis. The doctor’s agenda, incorporating lists of detailed questions, should not dominate the history taking. Listening is at the heart of good history taking. Without the patient’s perspective, the history is likely to be much less revealing and less useful to the doctor who is attempting to help the patient. In practice you may sometimes need to gather a collateral history from a relative, friend or carer. This may be with a child or an adult with impaired mental state. The use of jargon has become very common in the healthcare field, especially in Medical/Dental records. Although the use of standard Medical Jargon can be seen as professional, efficient shorthand, a lack of awareness regarding the standard medical abbreviations and incessant and overzealous use of slang among the healthcare professionals can act as a barrier to effective communication and understanding among patients and peers. The use of a pre-printed Dental/Medical history questionnaire can serve a valuable role in taking and documenting history and clinical examination of a patient, and formulation of a treatment plan. This manual is an effort in that direction. This book, written in concise and clear language, written on how to successfully record a case history including indices and planning of treatment by dental students and is intended to fill that lacuna.

Book excerpt: Effective wire bending techniques that are customized to each individual patient make orthodontic treatment more efficient and can reduce treatment time. In lieu of overly complicated wire bending, the author of this manual promotes precise, intuitive bending and presents the proven methods that work with any biologically compatible wire. The essential components and techniques of customized wire bending are detailed step-by-step, including trimming of casts; selection and proper manipulation of pliers; the first-order bends (in or out), second-order bends (up or down), and third-order bends (torque); and optimal methods of adjustment to be used during orthodontic treatment. In addition, the author elucidates the "fourth-order bend," which is the understanding of how to use a wire effectively to apply orthodontic force to a patient over time. Technical images and case presentations illustrate each step of the process to ensure maximum comprehension. A must-have guide for orthodontic residents and practitioners alike.
