La première partie du livre est consacrée à une description des spectres moléculaires et à une introduction à la symétrie et à la théorie des groupes. Considérant tour à tour les molécules diatomiques puis les molécules plus complexes, l’ouvrage traite alors successivement des phénomènes de rotation et de vibration dans les molécules avant d’envisager les transitions électroniques. Une attention particulière est accordée aux techniques mises en oeuvre en spectrométrie ultraviolette et visible, en spectroscopie infrarouge et pour l’étude des phénomènes de fluorescence. Enfin les applications de la spectroscopie moléculaire à l’astrophysique sont brièvement évoquées. Synthèse actuelle, détaillée mais pas trop technique de la spectrométrie moléculaire, tel peut être décrit le contenu de cet ouvrage.
