Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a nondestructive technique that can be used to characterize a wide variety of systems. Sustained development of both methodology and instrumentation have allowed NMR to evolve as a powerful technology, with applications in pure sciences, medicine, drug development, and important branches of industry. NMR provides precise structural information down to each atom and bond in a molecule, and is the only method for the determination of structures of molecules in a solution. This book compiles a series of articles describing the application of NMR in a variety of interesting scientific challenges. The articles illustrate the versatility and flexibility of NMR.

Book excerpt: NMR Probeheads for Biophysical and Biomedical Experiments 2nd Edition is essential reading for anyone in the field of NMR or MRI, from students to medical or biological scientists performing experiments under certain physical and/or geometrical conditions, unattainable by conventional or available probes. The material guides the reader through the most basic and comprehensive stages in accomplishing a correct probe design, from a very basic oscillating circuit to much more elaborate designs. This new edition has been revised and updated to include a chapter dedicated to RF components, which are commonly used for probes realization and their frequency-dependent characteristics. Another completely revised chapter concerns the multiple coil systems and discusses arrays coils, different decoupling methods, and some principles for interfacing coils with low-noise preamplifiers. The principles of linear circuit analysis are presented in a dedicated chapter. Last but not least, accompanying files containing updated software for probe design have been made available from the publisher's website.

This book covers a variety of topics, including infrared spectrum, polyatomic ions, infrared emissions, and Raman spectra. Organized into five parts encompassing 72 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the infrared spectrum of pyridine. This text then examines the results from studies of the infrared and Raman spectra of N2O4 in the solid and liquid phases at low temperatures. Other chapters consider the infrared spectrum of a mixture of N2O3 and N2O4, which has been studied in the liquid phase from 2 to 25 μ and in the solid phase from 2 to 35 μ, both at low temperatures. The final chapter describes the instrument developed for the measurement of rotatory dispersion and discusses some of the results obtained in the study of the complexes. This book is a valuable resource for chemists.

Book excerpt: Antiviral drug development has led to significant advances in the control of globally prevalent viral infections by the hepatitis C (HCV) and the human immunodeficiency viruses. Nonetheless, there are current gaps in the armamentarium against global viral infections due to some herpes viruses, the hepatitis B virus, and the deadly filovirus Ebola and arenavirus Tacaribe responsible of outbreaks of hemorrhagic fever in emerging countries. Arbidol (ARB) is a cost-effective antiviral with broad-spectrum activity, administered for decades in Russia and China against flu. We showed that ARB inhibits HCV infection, and has potent antiviral activity against the Ebola, Tacaribe, hepatitis B and human herpes-8 viruses. Since these viruses have divergent life cycles, we posit that ARB may exhibit varied modes of action against different viruses. Careful dissection of molecular mechanisms of action of ARB against HCV and the Ebola virus revealed that ARB blocked viral entry. ARB might, therefore, constitute a pharmacological approach against globally prevalent viruses, and an affordable molecule for emerging countries in urgent need for effective antiviral therapies.
