Book Synopsis Principles of Tidal Sedimentology by : Richard A. Davis Jr.
Download or read book Principles of Tidal Sedimentology written by Richard A. Davis Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive, contemporary review of tidal environments and deposits. Individual chapters, each written by world-class experts, cover the full spectrum of coastal, shallow-marine and even deep-marine settings where tidal action influences or controls sediment movement and deposition. Both siliciclastic and carbonate deposits are covered. Various chapters examine the dynamics of sediment transport by tides, and the morphodynamics of tidal systems. Several chapters explore the occurrence of tidal deposits in the stratigraphic context of entire sedimentary basins. This book is essential reading for both coastal geologists and managers, and geologists interested in extracting hydrocarbons from complex tidal successions.

Book Synopsis Nitrogen Cycling in Coastal Marine Environments by : T. Henry Blackburn
Download or read book Nitrogen Cycling in Coastal Marine Environments written by T. Henry Blackburn and published by . This book was released on 1988-03-21 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen discharge to the coastal environment has been increasing, posing the threat of accelerated eutrofication. Considerable research has been conducted in recent years to examine the impact of the nitrogen loading in coastal ecosystems. Based on proceedings from a SCOPE symposium held at the University of Aarhus in July of 1985, this volume covers a variety of up-to-date developments in research on nitrogen cycling in coastal marine environments. Topics include the role of nitrogen in algal productivity, regeneration of nutrients in the water column and the sediments, and the flow of nitrogen in coastal ecosystems.
Book Synopsis Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat by : National Research Council
Download or read book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.
Book Synopsis Ostracoda in the Earth Sciences by : Patrick De Deckker
Download or read book Ostracoda in the Earth Sciences written by Patrick De Deckker and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1988 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ostracods belong to a group of microfossils found in nearly all types of aquatic environments. These microcrustaceans, characterized by a bivalved, calcitic carapace, are used to reconstruct ancient environments. For example, they can help to provide information on palaeoclimates, palaeogeography, the formation of deep oceans, sea level changes, etc. This book endeavours to bring about a greater understanding of their usefulness in many aspects of geological sciences, and provides suggestions for future research. It is principally intended for the non-specialist, and shows many applications of ostracods to help solve geological problems and phenomena. Topics reviewed assume no prior knowledge of palaeontology, and thus terminology is kept simple. There is an exhaustive index, and an appendix supplying additional references on significant sources of information on ostracods. This book aims to deliver information on ostracods to those people not usually interested in the literature of palaeontology and also to awaken an interest in the Ostracoda by referring to more specialized articles published elsewhere.

Book Synopsis Sedimentology and Stratigraphy by : Gary Nichols
Download or read book Sedimentology and Stratigraphy written by Gary Nichols and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised and updated edition introduces the reader to sedimentology and stratigraphic principles, and provides tools for the interpretation of sediments and sedimentary rocks. The processes of formation, transport and deposition of sediment are considered and then applied to develop conceptual models for the full range of sedimentary environments, from deserts to deep seas and reefs to rivers. Different approaches to using stratigraphic principles to date and correlate strata are also considered, in order to provide a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of sedimentology and stratigraphy. The text and figures are designed to be accessible to anyone completely new to the subject, and all of the illustrative material is provided in an accompanying CD-ROM. High-resolution versions of these images can also be downloaded from the companion website for this book at: www.wiley.com/go/nicholssedimentology.

Download or read book Cities at Risk written by Helene Joffe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the major growth of the world’s population over the past century, as well as rapid urbanisation, people increasingly live in crowded cities. This trend is often accompanied by proliferation of poorly built housing, uncontrolled use of land, occupation of unsafe environments and overstretched services. When a natural hazard strikes such a city many people are vulnerable to loss of life and property. This book explores what these people think and feel about the threats that they face. How do they live with perils ranging from earthquakes to monsoons, from floods to hurricanes, in the 21st century? The authors are drawn from a large range of disciplines: Psychology, Engineering, Geography, Anthropology and Urban Planning. They also reflect on how perils are represented in multiple cultures: the United States, Japan, Turkey, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. The book therefore not only brings to light the ways that different cultures represent natural hazards but also the different ways in which various disciplines write about living with perils in the 21st century. The book is addressed both to researchers and to organizations involved with risk management and risk mitigation.
