Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The Biographical Dictionary of Psychology provides biographical information and critical analysis of the influences and reception of over 500 people who have made a significant contribution to the field of psychology. Written by an international team of contributors, this volume charts the development of the practice of psychology worldwide from its emergence in the 1850s up to the present day. Biographies range from important historical figures to those who have had a more recent impact on the field, including: * Chris Argyris * Donald Broadbent * Kay Deaux * Leon Festinger * Sigmund Freud * Erich Fromm * Francis Galton * Eleanor Gibson * Doreen Kimur * Ulric Neisser * Jean Piaget * Herbert A. Simon * B.F. Skinner * Amos Tversky Entries are alphabetically organized and similarly structured for ease of access and allowing comparison of information. Introductory biographical details cover main fields of interest, nationality, principal appointments, honours, and places and dates of birth and death. This is followed by full bibliographic details of principal publications, as well as secondary and critical literature which provide a useful route into further research. Following on from there is an invaluable critical appraisal of the major achievements, influences and reception of the psychologists themselves. Thorough indexing allows the reader to access information by American Psychological Association subject division, key concepts, name and institution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascism and the racial laws of 1938 dramatically changed the scientific research and the academic community. Guarnieri focuses on psychology, from its promising origins to the end of the WWII. Psychology was marginalized in Italy both by the neo-idealistic reaction against science, and fascism (unlike Nazism) with long- lasting consequences. Academics and young scholars were persecuted because they were antifascist or Jews and the story of Italian displaced scholars is still an embarrassing one. The book follows scholars who emigrated to the United States, such as psychologist Renata Calabresi, and to Palestine, such as Enzo Bonaventura. Guarnieri traces their journey and the help they received from antifascist and Zionist networks and by international organizations. Some succeeded, some did not, and very few went back.

Book excerpt: This book raises for the first time developmental issues in relation to the theory of social representations, which Duveen and Lloyd introduced to account for the influence of social life on psychological processes. He describes a society's values, ideas, beliefs and practices as social representations which function both as rule systems structuring social life and as codes facilitating communication. The editors' introduction identifies the need to expand the theory of social representations to consider developmental changes in social beliefs, in individual understanding, and in the process of communication. Individual chapters examine aspects of such processes in the domains of nursery-school life, of gender, of social divisions in society, of images of childhood, of emotion, of intelligence and of psychology. In the final chapter Moscovici considers the contribution which these developmental perspectives make to the theory. The book will interest specialists and students in the human and social sciences, including developmental and social psychology, sociology, and communication studies.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a number of contributions, which concern basic issues in the field of brain-behavioural development in the human, especially with regard to the young child. They have been written by distinguished scientists, active in this field, who have all been participating in an Erasmus teachers exchange program, entitled 'Biopsychology of Development' (ICP-NL-3026/14). This volume is the product of this cooperation. The book is intended for scientists in this and related fields as well as for graduate students and advanced undergraduates, as a means of updating their knowledge about human brain-behaviour development. It offers a contemporary review, methodologically and theoretically, of some basic issues in early human brain-behaviour development. Attention is paid to normal development and also to deviance as exemplified by discussions on child abuse and on early development of preterms and children of deaf mothers. For the title of the book we have choosen for the term 'Developmental Psychology' with as a subtitle 'biopsychological perspectives' in order to express our interest in the basic requirements in the organism for an optimal adaptation during ontogeny as well as in the mechanisms underlying maladaptive behaviour. The term may indicate that we are not just focusing on 'higher brain functions' which would be suggested by the term 'Developmental Neuropsychology' . Further, it is meant to express our interest in the integrated study of normal and deviant development, without a particular focus on abnormality, which would be suggested by the term 'Developmental Psychopathology'.
