Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective work aims to compare media (and in particular cultural press) in Francoist Spain and Communist Romania, placing the two opposing paradigms in a common approach with the intention of identifying shared patterns and intricate connections between them, but, at the same time, without ignoring their radical differences. This comparison is performed both explicitly, through several chapters focusing on the general methodological implications of such a comparison between Francoist Spain and Communist Romania in the development of totalitarian / dictatorial propagandistic systems; and implicitly, by offering the academic frame to a series of case studies from both regimes. The contributors to this volume – Spanish, Anglo-Saxon and Romanian scholars – approach several aspects of media in relation to politics, propaganda, historical or social aspects in the two regimes, based on their academic backgrounds: history, cultural studies, media and literature. The volume intends to suggest – through its collection of general, comparative or analytic chapters, as well as through a new approach on two political and cultural phenomena otherwise studied as opposing paradigms – the need for a larger debate on the potential of the approach to these phenomena in a common framework.

This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Social History of Punitive Institutions in Spain needs meetings and discussions, comparison and collaboration between researchers. Only then it will become visible and intelligible as a historiographical trend and, above all, as a theoretical-methodological hope, because in fact, now it is more than conceivable as a historiographical practice. Here in this book are outlined, along with the achievements, the shortcomings and the most pressing challenges. Far from seeking an extemporaneous autonomy, Social History of Punitive Institutions wants to try to find its own feasibility based on intersections and good mixings. Those objectives were considered by the Study Group about History of Prison and Punitive Institutions (Grupo de Estudio sobre la Historia de la Prisión y las Instituciones Punitivas, GEHPIP) –an interuniversity team and with central office at Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM)– when organising what it decided to name in an homonymous way 1st International Congress on History of Prison and Punitive Institutions (I Congreso Internacional sobre Historia de la Prisión y las Instituciones Punitivas), held in Ciudad Real (Spain) from 10 to 12 April 2013. The electronic book here presented is a good example of what it was told and discussed there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new reference work on Spain could serve as a model for other historical dictionaries. Among its winning features are the fact that it treats a topic on which there has not been a single general reference work in this century and that it has an experienced editor who is a noted scholar in his own right, a first-rate cast of international contributors, a judicious choice of entries, a consistent style, a superior bibliography and a good index. Reference Books Bulletin Historians face a number of challenges in interpreting the complexities of modern Spanish history. With few authoritative works available in the field, the Historical Dictionary of Modern Spain, 1700-1988 fills the need for a comprehensive reference and summarizes the work of a new generation of Spanish research. It is unique in its wealth of detail from the eighteenth century to the late twentieth and in offering, on some topics, the only thorough discussion available in English. Kern has included six major areas of Spanish history in this volume: political, governmental, diplomatic, institutional, cultural, social, and military. Several maps, illustrations and tables enhance the entries prepared by some seventy scholars from the United States, Canada, Britain, Spain, and Latin America. From the War of Spanish Succession to the role of Juan Carlos, the Dictionary features the latest historiographic interpretations and data. The alphabetical listings are cross-referenced to related topics and a timeline is provided to establish basic chronology. The bibliography includes the more important works on the period since 1700.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely revised and extended updating of John Merrrill's The Elite Press, published over a decade ago, provides a provocative and thoroughly researched look into the characteristics of "great" or "quality" journalism in an international context. The introductory chapters define newspaper "greatness" by describing those journals that are serious, intellectually oriented, cosmopolitan, courageous, impartial, interpretive, reliable, responsible and socially-concerned. Here the authors place newspapers in their political environments, depicting the differences between authoritative and liberatarian press systems.
