Download or read book In the Land of Silence written by Jesus Urzagasti and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 1995-07-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This masterful translation of a recent Bolivian novel, En el pais del silencio, transports us to a mysterious, silent, and unfamiliar land where astonishing truths are placed within our grasp. Like a parabola, this amazing story begins and ends in the same place on the same day in the life of a single persona with three interior entities: Jursafú, The Other, and The Dead Man. By portraying them as separate, Urzagasti accentuates their interrelatedness, for one character cannot grow without the others, nor can any one of them move toward an ultimate goal without the experience and knowledge of the other two. The author’s mature and thoroughly Bolivian style is marked by a synthesis of poetic and novelistic techniques which blend perfectly the indigenous and European voices of his ancestral home.

Book Synopsis Silence and Psychology in Claude Vincendon’s Golden Silence (Durrell Studies 9) by : Richard Pine

This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinguished French-Alexandrian novelist Claude Vincendon died in 1967, leaving unpublished her Golden Silence (1964), the typescript of which was recently discovered. The book focusses on the life of a mute girl who has been cursed by the Evil Eye, and her life in her native Alexandria, in England and Australia. The text has been edited, with commentaries, by Sibylle Vincendon (the author’s niece), Richard Pine and David Green. The exploratory essays contained in the present book address Claude Vincendon’s life; the background to her aristocratic family in Alexandria; her marriage to Irishman Tim Forde and their life together in Ireland, Australia and Israel; Claude’s second marriage to Lawrence Durrell, and their working life together in Cyprus and France; the inter-connection between their literary works; Claude’s first three novels, published in the 1960s by Faber and Faber; the social and political conditions in post-war Egypt, Britain and Australia; the construction of Golden Silence and the psychological character of silence itself; the phenomenon of the Evil Eye; and the concept of Nemesis which permeates Golden Silence.
Book Synopsis Anton Rubinstein by : Philip S. Taylor
Download or read book Anton Rubinstein written by Philip S. Taylor and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-14 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first modern biography in English of Russian composer-pianist Anton Rubinstein, this book places Rubinstein within the context of Russian and western European musical culture during the late 19th century, exploring his rise to international fame from humble origins in Bessarabia, as well as his subsequent rapid decline and marginalization in later musical culture. Taylor provides a balanced account of Rubinstein's life and his career as a piano virtuoso, conductor, composer, and as the founder of Russia's first conservatory. Widely considered the virtuosic heir to Liszt, and recognized internationally as an equivalent cultural icon, he performed with most leading musicians of the day, including Liszt himself, Joachim, Clara Schumann, Vieuxtemps, Wieniawski, Saint-Saens, and Ysaÿe.
Book Synopsis The Diary of a Russian Lady: Reminiscences of Barbara Doukhovskoy by : Barbara Doukhovskoy

This book was released on with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My father, Prince Theodore Galitzine, married my mother being a widower with five children, three of whom died before my birth. My earliest vivid recollections begin when I was two years old. I distinctly remember feeling a terrible pain in parting with my wet-nurse, to whom I was passionately attached. I got hold of her skirt and wouldn’t let her go, weeping wildly. It was my first bitter affliction. I could not put up with the new nurse, whom I hated from the depths of my little heart, and I would not call her otherwise than Wild Cat, with baby petulance, having already at that early age pronounced likes and dislikes. We were in perpetual state of warfare. When I was about three years old that nurse was succeeded by a pretty Belgian girl named Melle. Henriette. The tutor of my two step-brothers, Mr. Liziar, made love to her and finished by marrying her some time after. He seemed somewhat half-witted; by night he went to chime the bells at the belfry of our village church in Dolgik, a fine estate belonging to my father, in the government of Kharkoff, and also amused himself by breaking, in the conservatory, the panes of glass with big stones. One day he frightened his sweetheart nearly to death by throwing a snake under her feet. After all these pranks it is no way astonishing that Mr. Liziar finished his days in a lunatic asylum. The tutor who succeeded him, asked my parents to bring his wife with him. He hastened to pocket the hundred roubles taken beforehand on account of his salary, and departed suddenly to Kharkoff to fetch her. Meanwhile my father received a letter from this tutor’s legitimate wife dated from St. Petersburg, in which she entreated papa to send her the half of her husband’s monthly salary, telling him he spent all his money on his mistress, whilst his wife and children had not a morsel of bread to put into their mouths. Of course, this too Don Juanesque tutor was instantly dismissed. My parents at that time kept an open house. On great occasions my smart nurse would appear in the dining-room carrying me in her arms, attired like a little fairy, all ribbons and lace, to be admired by our guests. She put me down on the table, and I promenaded quite at my ease between the flowers and fruits.

Book Synopsis Rions ensemble by : Harold Llewelyn Humphreys
Download or read book Rions ensemble written by Harold Llewelyn Humphreys and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1955-12-15 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-five crisp and amusing short stories in this collection prove that elementary readings in French can also be entertaining. Some are original anecdotes and others adaptations of traditional French of French-Canadian stories, some are from anonymous sources, and some by acknowledged masters such as LaFontaine. All are distinguished by the classic literary virtue of the French—precision, economy, and the traditional Gallic twist. A delightful series of line drawings by Antje Lingner aptly reflects the spirit of the book. This collection is designed for reading in Grades XI and XII, and for introductory courses at the University or Extension course level. To encourage a quick response and facility in reading, the stories emphasize the idiomatic and rely heavily on dialogue, avoiding as much as possible an over-literary syntax. The text employs elementary vocabulary and constructions throughout and is representative in all respects of the spoken language today. The emphasis on conversational organization in the stories will be immediately apparent, and it is this feature that should be exploited in the classroom and other group situations. On a series of four long-playing records the entire text has been transcribed for use in oral and phonetics classes. The readings are given slowly but naturally and with a relish which catches the drama and humour of the material. The combination of text and recordings offers a most valuable method of acquiring aural familiarity with spoken French. The stories are supplemented with vocabulary, notes and exercises. For each story there is supplied a series of questions that lend themselves to oral answers and discussion; in addition there is a short exercise reviewing grammatical forms, with special emphasis on the verb, as well as a brief passage for prose translation into French.

Book Synopsis Advanced French Grammar by : Monique L'Huillier
Download or read book Advanced French Grammar written by Monique L'Huillier and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-06-17 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1999 reference grammar, written for advanced students of French, their teachers, and others who want a better understanding of the French language, combines the best of modern and traditional approaches. Its objective is not only practical mastery of the language, but familiarity with its structure. Taking into account modern linguistic research, Advanced French Grammar approaches the French language primarily through the study of syntactic structures, but without excessive emphasis on formalism. It provides a generous number of examples, based on the author's own experience of teaching French to English-speakers, to help the student to understand the different meanings of apparently similar syntactic alternatives. The norms of 'correct expression' are given together with current usage and deviations, and appendixes provide information on the 1990 spelling reforms and on numbers. A substantial index of French and English words and of topics provides easy access to the text itself.
