Book Synopsis Informed Consent, Proxy Consent, and Catholic Bioethics by : Grzegorz Mazur, O.P.
Download or read book Informed Consent, Proxy Consent, and Catholic Bioethics written by Grzegorz Mazur, O.P. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers a comprehensive understanding rooted in Catholic anthropology and moral theory of the meaning and limits of informed and proxy consent to experimentation on human subjects. In particular, it seeks to articulate the rationale for proxy consent in both therapeutic and nontherapeutic settings. As to the former, the book proposes that the Golden Rule, recognizing the basic inclinations of human nature toward objective goods perfective of human persons, should underpin the notion of proxy consent to experimentation on humans. As to the latter, an additional scrutiny of the amount of risk involved is necessary, since the risk-benefit ratio frequently invoked to justify higher-risk therapeutic research does not exist in its nontherapeutic counterpart. This study discusses a number of possible solutions to this question and develops a position that builds upon the objective notion of the human good.

Download or read book Medicine and Maladies written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicine and Maladies explores the aesthetic, medical, and socio-political contexts that informed depictions of illness and disease in nineteenth-century France. Eleven essays by specialists in nineteenth-century French literature and visual culture probe the acts of writing, reading, and viewing corporeal afflictions across the works of medical practitioners, surgeons, pharmacists, novelists, and artists. Tracing scientific discourse in literary narratives and signalling references to fiction in medical texts, the contributions to this interdisciplinary volume invite us to rethink the relationship between the humanities and the medical sciences.

Book Synopsis The Catholic Church and Modern Sexual Knowledge, 1850-1950 by : Lucia Pozzi
Download or read book The Catholic Church and Modern Sexual Knowledge, 1850-1950 written by Lucia Pozzi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-24 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to present a comprehensive historical picture of the modern Catholic concern with the body and sexuality. The Catholic church is commonly believed to have always opposed birth control and abortion throughout the centuries. Yet the Catholic encounter with modern sexuality has a more complex and interesting history. What was the meaning of sexual purity? Why did eugenics matter to Catholicism? How did the Society of Jesus interpret the idea of overpopulation? Why did Pius XI decide to issue the notorious encyclical Casti connubii on Christian marriage – the first modern papal pronouncement on birth control, abortion, and eugenics? In answering these questions, Lucia Pozzi uncovers new archival and unpublished records to dig into Catholic responses to modern sexual knowledge, showing the Catholic church at times resisting, but also often welcoming, scientific modernity.
