Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reception Theory orientation discusses how the recast was received in its time; performance reviews contemporary with the new versions of old plays indicate the controversy elicited between those who believed, on the one hand, that the "classics" should be preserved as they have been handed down, and on the other, that a work of art is never "finished" and is always open to new stagings and interpretations. Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Pedro Calderon de la Barca, and others have been and continue to be reinterpreted in the light of new literary, social, and political orientations.

McClelland, a pioneer-scholar of Spain’s eighteenth century, this volume of original essays contains, besides an Introduction to her career and internationally influential writings, three previously unpublished essays by McClelland and nine studies by other scholars, all of which are focused on elucidating the Enlightenment and its characteristic manifestations in the Hispanic world. Among the Enlightenment writers and artists, works and genres, themes and issues discussed, are: Nicolás Moratín and epic poetry, Lillo’s The London Merchant and English and French influences on eighteenth-century Spanish drama, José Marchena and literary historiography, oppositions and misunderstandings within Spanish society as reflected in El sí de las niñas, Goya and the visual arts, Quintana’s Pelayo and historical tragedy, Enlightenment discourse, the Periodical Press, theatre as propaganda, the ideology and politics of Empire, the roots of revolt in late viceregal Quito, women’s experience of Enlightenment in Spain, social and cultural difference in colonial Peru, ideological debate and uncertainty during the Age of Reason, eighteenth-century Spain on the nineteenth-century stage, and public opinion in Spain on the eve of the French, and European, Revolution. First published as a Special Issue of the Bulletin of Spanish Studies (LXXXVI [November–December 2009], Nos 7–8), this book will be of value and stimulus to all scholars concerned to investigate and interpret the culture, theatre, ideology, society and politics of the Enlightenment in Spain, Europe and Spanish America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the contributions to Translating Shakespeare for the Twenty-First Century evolve from a practical commitment to the translation of Shakespearean drama and at the same time reveal a sophisticated awareness of recent developments in literary criticism, Shakespeare studies, and the relatively new field of Translation studies. All the essays are sensitive to the criticism to which notions of the original as well as distinctions between the creative and the derivative have been subjected in recent years. Consequently, they endeavour to retrieve translation from its otherwise subordinate status, and advance it as a model for all writing, which is construed, inevitably, as a rewriting. This volume offers a wide range of responses to the theme of Shakespeare and translation as well as Shakespeare in translation. Diversity is ensured both by the authors’ varied academic and cultural backgrounds, and by the different critical standpoints from which they approach their themes – from semiotics to theatre studies, and from gender studies to readings firmly rooted in the practice of translation. Translating Shakespeare for the Twenty-First Century is divided into two complementary sections. The first part deals with the broader insights to be gained from a multilingual and multicultural framework. The second part focuses on Shakespearean translation into the specific language and the culture of Portugal.

Book excerpt: This book studies the exclusive refractive perspectives of British women who took up the twin challenges of travel and writing when Britain was establishing itself as the greatest empire on earth. Contributors explore the ways in which travel writing has defined women’s engagement with Empire and British identity, and was inextricably linked with the issue of identity formation. With a capacious geographical canvas, this volume examines the multifaceted relations and negotiations of British women travellers in a range of different imperial contexts across continents from America, Africa, Europe to Australia.

Within Nineteenth-century studies, Geoffrey Ribbans analyses unexpected continuities between Galdós's Marianelaand El doctor Centeno, Eamonn Rodgers discovers mythic dimensions inEl caballero encantado, Rhian Davies explores regeneración in the Torquemada novels and the late Arthur Terry reflects on the non-realist bases of El amigo Manso, while Harriet Turner traces parallels between Alas'sLa Regenta and the trial of Martha Stewart. Within Translation studies and pedagogy, Jeremy Lawrance analyses sixteenth-century translation's contribution to the prestige of vernacular languages; Philip Deacon evaluates theItalian translation of Moratín's El viejo y la niña; Robin Warner explores the translation of cartoon humour; Patricia Odber contrasts ten translations of a poem by Gil Vicente; and Anthony Trippett and Paul Jordan reflecton the purpose and practices of higher education.
