Book excerpt: El período intercensal 2001-2011 ha resultado ser el de mayor crecimiento poblacional en la historia española, tanto en términos absolutos, con un incremento cercano a los seis millones de habitantes, como relativos, con un crecimiento del 14,6%. Esta explosión demográfica no ha sido homogénea. El volumen de extranjeros se ha multiplicado por un factor superior a 3 con un crecimiento absoluto superior al de los españoles: mientras estos crecieron en 2,3 millones entre ambos censos, los extranjeros aumentaron en 3,7 millones. Si bien es cierto que las alteraciones municipales ocurridas entre los censos de 2001 y 2011 han sido escasas –ocho segregaciones–, los profundos cambios metodológicos introducidos en la práctica censal con el Censo de Población y Viviendas de 2011, por una parte, y la propia dinámica demográfica reciente, por otra, tremendamente cambiante en períodos muy cortos de tiempo, hacían necesario actualizar los elementos más sustanciales de anteriores trabajos que, partiendo del censo de 1900, tomaban como base el de 2001 en el estudio de la localización de la población sobre el territorio. De esta forma, el trabajo traza los rasgos más relevantes en la evolución de la población, su localización y sus principales características partiendo, en algunos casos, desde la mitad del siglo xix, cuando por primera vez aparecen los municipios en los censos, hasta la actualidad. El presente volumen amplía y mejora los resultados presentados en dos trabajos anteriores: La localización de la población española sobre el territorio. Un siglo de cambios: un estudio basado en series homogéneas (1900-2001) y Actividad y territorio: un siglo de cambios. Con esta actualización de las series homogéneas de población se ofrece a la sociedad y a los estudiosos un banco de datos detallado que ofrece nuevas oportunidades de análisis y mejora la comprensión de los aspectos fundamentales de la localización de la actividad sobre el territorio.

En primer lugar, la aportación más relevante del libro -y del CD que lo acompaña- consiste en el incremento de los datos que ofrecía el trabajo anterior para algunas de las características definitorias de la población. Estas características son agrupadas en cuatro apartados: demográficas (edad y sexo), niveles de cualificación, movilidad geográfica y relación con la actividad económica. En segundo lugar, haciendo uso de los datos del padrón, se han extendido al año 2005 las informaciones presentadas en la citada monografía anterior, lo que permite valorar de esta forma el impacto de los fuertes movimientos migratorios en nuestra historia más reciente. Book excerpt: The present book analyzes the relationship between internal migration, urbanization and democratization in Spain during the period of General Francisco Franco's dictatorship (1939-1975) and Spain's transition to democracy (1975-1982). Specifically, the book explores the production and management of urban space as one form of political and social repression under the dictatorship, and the threat posed to the official urban planning regimes by the phenomenon of mass squatting (chabolismo). The growing body of recent literature that analyzes the role of neighborhood associations within Spain's transition to democracy, points to the importance and radicalism of associations that formed within squatters' settlements such as Orcasitas in Madrid, Otxarkoaga in Bilbao or Somorrostro and el Camp de la Bota in Barcelona. However, relatively little is known about the formation of community life in these neighborhoods during the 1950s, and about the ways in which the struggle to control and fashion urban space prior to Spain's transition to democracy generated specific notions of democratic citizenship amongst populations lacking in prior coherent ideological commitment.

In the era of modern development, however, rural-urban migration intensified in an unprecedented way and many rural communities depopulated. While during the pre-industrial period migration had contributed to the economic and social reproduction of rural communities, it now challenged the continuity of the rural lifestyle. This book analyses the topic for the case of Spain, which in the twentieth century experienced one of the most intense processes of rural depopulation in modern Europe. The interaction between Spanish industrialisation and rural migration, the demographic implications of agrarian change, the obstacles to the development of rural non-farm activities, the rural problems of access to infrastructures and services, the role of public policy, and the consequences of depopulation for the rural community are the central elements of this study, which inserts the Spanish case within its European context. Distanced from both the anti-modern stance that idealises paradise lost and the Panglossian mood that welcomes anything that came with modernisation, the book explains how the adaptive strategies put into practice by rural populations led to a “peaceful surrender” of traditional rural society.
