Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What image of Latin America have North American fiction writers created, found, or echoed, and how has the prevailing discourse about the region shaped their work? How have their writings contributed to the discursive construction of our southern neighbors, and how has the literature undermined this construction and added layers of complexity that subvert any approach based on stereotypes? Combining American Studies, Canadian Studies, Latin American Studies, and Cultural Theory, Breinig relies on long scholarly experience to answer these and other questions. Hemispheric Imaginations, an ambitious interdisciplinary study of literary representations of Latin America as encounters with the other, is among the most extensive such studies to date. It will appeal to a broad range of scholars of American Studies.

Book excerpt: The golden specter of El Dorado and its promises of unlimited wealth have haunted Western iconography for centuries. The Miraculous Lie: Lope de Aguirre and the Search for El Dorado in the Latin American Historical Novel is a fascinating study of five twentieth-century Latin American novels that focus on one particular search for El Dorado: the infamous 1559 expedition, headed by Pedro Ursua and the first legendary colonial rebel against the crown, Lope de Aguirre. Author Bart Lewis approaches five works--Arturo Uslar Pietri's El Camino de El Dorado, Abel Posses's Daim-n, Miguel Otero Silva's Lope de Aquirre, Pr'ncipe de la Libertad, Jorge Ernesto Funes's Una Lanza por Lope de Aguirre, and FZlix _lvarez SOenz's Cr-nica de Blasfemos--as representations of Latin American literature during the mid to late twentieth-century and as re-examinations of the notorious figure of Lope de Aguirre. Lewis is therefore able to provide not only a successful chronology of the stylistic development of the Latin American novel, but also a thoughtful analysis of how these novels appropriate Aguirre and give a revisionist and authentic voice to the Latin American cultural founder. Wonderfully engaging and beautifully written, The Miraculous Lie examines the search for El Dorado in modern Latin American literature as the search for self-determination.

This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project involves two studies, each supportive of the other: one in literary criticism, the other in Spanish-American fantastic realism. The former works out a practical synthesis of intrinsic and extrinsic views of literature on the basis of the archetypal structures of the texts. The latter applies that approach to the analysis and hermeneutics of "El ahogado mas hermoso del mundo," by Garc(')ia Marquez, Rulfo's Pedro Paramo, and Cortazar's Bestiario. The works are related through their way of reconstructing the mythic pattern of the quest. The resulting models are compared in terms of their implied aesthetics and anthropology. Two dominant nuclei polarize the first two versions: Paradise Lost and Utopia; they correspond to the dialectics of Loss/Recovery of the original topos. The third version develops the dialectics of Loss/Recovery of ontological unity, through the opposing nuclei of the Seeker and his Otherness. In the field of critical methodology the study reveals the concrete possibilities of reconciling opposing approaches on the grounds of empirically verifiable data (the literary symbolic patterns); and it shows the capacity of archetypes to recontextualize the text not only in literary tradition (Frye) but especially in the world that produces and consumes the work. In the field of narrative, the study proves that the same mythic constellation can articulate divergent and even opposing aesthetic and axiological models. The salient difference among the versions described is that the first two subordinate the process of the quest to its transcendent goal, whereas in the third the goal is a telos immanent in the process. The search for Paradise disguises a historicist model which in turns veils a transcendental monism. In contrast, the transcendence of self and language may become a way to affirm their basic historicity. Two opposing variants of the quest result from the conception of paradise, utopia and ontological unity as transcendental monisms or as intrinsic functions of history. The variants stand for divergent models of relation between a narrator and his functions--i.e., his word and his worlds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major bibliographic work reflects the significant interest in Latin American literature as a creative force in the world today. Rela who has provided Latin American bibliography with many ground-breaking contributions, has created a single, comprehensive reference work for serious scholarship on Latin American literature with sources through 1986. Among the criteria used to determine which authors and works would be included are originality, critical appraisal, and the interest the work held for professors, researchers, and students. The works are divided into general sections; each section is broken down by country and by genre (poetry, prose fiction, drama, essay) and annotations are provided for many works. The book concludes with an author index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark collection of illustrated essays explores the vastly underappreciated history of America's other cities -- the great metropolises found south of our borders in Central and South America. Buenos Aires, So Paulo, Mexico City, Caracas, Havana, Santiago, Rio, Tijuana, and Quito are just some of the subjects of this diverse collection. How have desires to create modern societies shaped these cities, leading to both architectural masterworks (by the likes of Luis Barragn, Juan O'Gorman, Lcio Costa, Roberto Burle Marx, Carlos Ral Villanueva, and Lina Bo Bardi) and the most shocking favelas? How have they grappled with concepts of national identity, their colonial history, and the continued demands of a globalized economy? Lavishly illustrated, Cruelty and Utopia features the work of such leading scholars as Carlos Fuentes, Edward Burian, Lauro Cavalcanti, Fernando Oayrzn, Roberto Segre, and Eduardo Subirats, along with artwork ranging from colonial paintings to stills from Chantal Akerman's film From the Other Side. Also included is a revised translation of Spanish King Philip II's influential planning treatise of 1573, the "Laws of the Indies," which did so much to define the form of the Latin American city.
