Book excerpt: In recent years, the problem of translation has received renewed attention, but it has been mostly approached from a linguistic or ontological perspective. This book focuses on another aspect, i.e. the political and ethical implications of translation. Engaged in a debate, which encompasses various philosophers - such as Schleiermacher, Benjamin, Ortega y Gasset, Quine, Gadamer, Derrida, and Ricur - the book's contributions show that translation can be considered in an ambivalent way (which has a great ethical and political significance) as an attempt to bring the other back to one's own world or, vice versa, as an attempt to open up one's own world and to experience different cultures. Translation is in fact, inevitably, an experience of alterity. (Series: Philosophy - Language - Literature / Philosophie - Sprache - Literatur - Vol. 4)

This book draws on dynamic new work in feminist book history and publishing studies to offer the first comparative collection exploring women's diverse, deeply embedded work in modern publishing. Highlighting the value of networks, collaboration, and archives, the companion sets out new ways of reading women's contributions to the production and circulation of global print cultures. With an international, intergenerational set of contributors using diverse methodologies, essays explore women working in publishing transatlantically, on the continent, and beyond the Anglosphere. The book combines new work on high-profile women publishers and editors alongside analysis of women's work as translators, illustrators, booksellers, advertisers, patrons, and publisher's readers; complemented by new oral histories and interviews with leading women in publishing today. The first collection of its kind, the companion helps establish and shape a thriving new research field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the Vesalian anatomical revolution as its point of departure, this volume charts the apparent rise and fall of anatomy studies within universities in sixteenth-century Spain, focussing particularly on primary sources from 1550 to 1600. In doing so, it both clarifies the Spanish contribution to the field of anatomy and disentangles the distorted political and historiographical viewpoints emerging from previous research. Studies of early modern Iberian science have only been carried out coherently and collaboratively in the last few decades, even though fierce debates on the subject have dominated Spanish historiography for more than two centuries. In the field of anatomy studies, many uninformed and biased readings of archival sources have resulted in a very confused picture of the practice of dissection and the teaching of anatomy in the Iberian Peninsula, in which the highly complex conditions of anatomical research within Spain’s national context are often oversimplified. The new empirical evidence that this book brings to light suggests a far more multifaceted narrative of Iberian Renaissance anatomy than has been presented to date.

Book Synopsis The Hidden Italy by : Hermann W. Haller

Book excerpt: The Hidden Italy is the first bilingual English edition of some of the best Italian dialect poetry written over the past two centuries. The selection of more than four hundred poems in Piedmontese, Venetian, Milanese, Romagnol, Roman, Neapolitan, Sicilian, and other dialects illustrates the impressive variety of Italy's literary and linguistic civilization. Italian dialect literature originated in the Renaissance, after Tuscan had won its preeminence as the officially sanctioned Italian literary language. Despite the official victory of Tuscan, however, many writers consciously preferred and chose their own regional or local dialects as their medium of literary expression. This departure from Tuscan became a particularly significant phenomenon in the 18th century and has continued up to the present day. Much of the poetry is characterized by its realistic portrayals of the lower classes, their suffering from social injustice and poverty, the simplicity of their approach to life, particularly to earthy, sensual experience. Many poets use or create a language that is mimetic, expressive, often unabashedly obscene and irreverent. The dialect becomes the language of pain and anger, of biting satire or political rebellion, of humor and meditation. It is also the language which reveals the spirit of Italy's diverse regional civilizations. Haller's literal prose translations and commentaries are aimed at leading the reader back to the original text. and its intrinsic flavor. Thus the book has appeal and importance both for poetry lovers in general and for people with a special interest in Italian linguistic and literary culture.
