The city began as a small collection of huts that eventually became the Spanish Empire's main naval station in the world. La Habana became a thriving, entrepreneurial port, the Caribbean's lighthouse-city, within the colonial Spanish Caribbean, due to its excellent harbor and strategic position facing the Gulf Stream. In 1553, Havana became the island's capital. In the 16th century and beginning of the 17th the city was attacked and besieged on several occasions by French, British and Dutch pirates, which catalyzed the construction of defenses, including massive walls. Its occupation by the British in 1762 led to Havana being exchanged for Florida, an indication of the high value the King of Spain placed on it. The King ordered the reinforcement of its fortifications to the highest possible level. Havana thus became the best protected of the ports in Spanish America. By 1810 the Spanish Main was imploding, and Havana ceased to be a must-stop trading post. Cuba remained part of Spain until 1898, perhaps because of its amazing wealth, its siege fortress tradition and extreme militarization. The country's destiny after 1898 was closely linked to the United States. As the largest of the islands in continental proximity between the subtropics and the tropics, and between English and Spanish America, Cuba was surrounded and affected by different socio-political trends. All this adds exoticism to Havana's urban culture. Its architecture includes buildings of great visual and cultural impact: Castillo del Morro (Morro Castle), Palacio del Segundo Cabo (Palace of the Second Corporal), Palacio de los Capitanes Generales (Captains-General Palace) or the Capitolio (Capitol Building). Havana, the "Paris of the Caribbean," was destined to become a place of refuge, a creative, hospitable, open and cosmopolitan city. As sweat turned into stone and mortar, a local way life, open to the world, became the distinguished trait of Habaneros as good hosts. On its flagpoles would wave proudly the flags of Spain, Britain, the U.S., and finally, Cuba. The sense of Cuban nationality was built around the concept of Havana, as presaged by the mass conducted at the site called El Templete in 1519. Perhaps more than a nationality, what the old stones of Havana exude is global universality.

Book excerpt: This is the most complete and thorough biography of Jose Raul Capablanca, one of the greatest players in the history of chess. Beginning with his family background, birth, childhood and introduction to the game in Cuba, it examines his life and play as a young man; follows his evolution as a player and rise to prominence, first as challenger and then world champion; his loss of the title to Alekhine and his efforts to recapture the championship in the last years of his too-short life. What emerges is a portrait of a complex man with far-ranging interests and concerns, in stark contrast to his robotic reputation as "the chess machine." Meticulously researched, utilizing many sources available only in Capablanca's home country, it puts truth to legend regarding a man who stood astride the chess world in of its most dynamic and dramatic eras. Numerous games and diagrams complement the text, as do a wealth of photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great Houses of Havana celebrates one hundred years of creativity, design, and style that made the city "the Paris of the Caribbean." For four hundred years, Havana was the center of Spanish trade in the western hemisphere. With the expansion of the sugar industry, independence from Spain, and North American investment, Havana became a city of great wealth, great style, and great houses in a vocabulary that was a unique amalgam of European, American, and Caribbean elements. Great Houses of Havana traces the evolution of the Cuban home from the classic, Spanish colonial courtyard house to the “Tropical Modernist” villas of the 1950s—houses reflecting international architecture trends while remaining true to the Cuban tradition. Cuba’s social history is woven throughout the book. Vintage photographs illustrate Havana’s sophisticated lifestyle—the masked balls, yacht club picnics, and dynastic weddings of fashionable Cubans and their international guests. Popular cafes, hotels, theaters, and weekend resorts are also featured, creating a view of the privileged life inside the gated mansions of the city’s grandest neighborhoods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of meticulously gathered interviews with government officials, ambassadors, and executives involved in foreign investment and economic development in Cuba. The interviews, many for the first time with a foreign journalist, are valuable from a historical perspective and as a story of development. It offers an “open window” on Cuba into a crucial segment of the country’s economy, erroneously perceived by some as “shuttered” to the outside world. This work is structured by the contextual history of Obama’s opening with Cuba, the bleak days of Trump, the Havana Syndrome, the onset of the pandemic, the election of Biden, and his “unmet promises”, through to economic recovery of the island under the post-pandemic normal. It highlights the work of the ones who lead and invest, create opportunities for themselves and others, initiate change, trigger sustainable development, build infrastructure, improve lives, strengthen the economy, lessen suffering, and create hope. They stimulate forward progress. These are the visionaries with plans seeking to realize the full potential of Cuba, driving a new era of sustainable development and growth. By filling those gaps, this work is an important supplement for any future analysis seeking to examine the country’s potential. The book is divided into parts: government, economy, foreign investment, industrial zones, banking, law, and business, followed by interviews with top executives from Cuba’s primary sectors. This “open window” on Cuba is a compelling fresh take that shows that Cuba is open for serious business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True professional baseball has not been played in Cuba since banned by the communist regime after the 1961 season, but there is a legacy of more than 70 years of continuous excellence by countless Cubans who played in the organized leagues of the island from 1878 to 1961. Scores of North Americans, white and black, and Latin Americans also played in Cuba during that time. Biographical and season-by-season statistical information for the many hundreds of Cuban, North American and Latin American players who took part in the Cuban leagues from 1878 to 1961 has been compiled in this work. The time period is divided into three eras. The first is from 1878 to 1899, the primitive years of the Cuban league; the second, 1900 to 1933, when the league opened its doors to welcome foreign players; and the third, from 1934 to 1961, the golden age that made Cuba then the second power in organized baseball. Birth and death dates for each player (if they could be determined) are provided. The statistical information for players includes the number of games played, at bats, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, and season average. The statistical information for pitchers includes the number of games pitched, complete games, win-loss record, and winning percentage.
