Book Synopsis France and the Spanish Civil War by : Mr Martin Hurcombe
Download or read book France and the Spanish Civil War written by Mr Martin Hurcombe and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging study of French intellectuals who represented the Spanish Civil War as it was happening and in its immediate aftermath, Martin Hurcombe explores the ways in which these individuals addressed national anxieties and shaped the French political landscape. Bringing together reportage, essays, and fiction by French supporters of Franco's Nationalists and of the Spanish Republic, Hurcombe shows the multifaceted ways in which that conflict impacted upon French political culture. He argues that French cultural representations of the war often articulated a utopian image of the Nationalists or of the Spanish Republic that served as models behind which the radical right or the radical left in France might mobilise. His book will be of interest not only to scholars of French literature and culture but also to those interested in how events unfolding in Spain found an echo in the political landscapes of other countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few events have stirred the emotions and caught the imaginations of intellectuals as did the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39. The Spanish Civil War in Literature examines the diverse literatures that the war inspired: a literature relating directly to the war, a literature of exile arising from the forty-year dictatorship of Francisco Franco, and a polemical literature embracing pro-Franco and Loyalist sympathies. In this book, specialists from a variety of fields explore these literatures within comparative and interdisciplinary frameworks. They reflect upon film, poetry, novels, painting, discourse, biography, and propaganda. The essays are grouped according to the original languages of the works they discuss—French, Russian, English, and Spanish.

LA FREQUENCE DE CES FORMES - ELLE N'EST PAS SEULEMENT LE FAIT DE QUELQUES PUBLICATIONS EMBLEMATIQUES - PROUVE L'EXISTENCE D'UN IMPORTANT PHENOMENE LITTERAIRE RESULTANT DE LA CONJONCTION D'UNE TRADITION ET D'UN CONTEXTE HISTORIQUE SPECIFIQUE. LA PREMIERE PARTIE ABORDE LES FORMES NARRATIVES BREVES DANS UNE PERSPECTIVE DIACHRONIQUE QUI DONNE DES ELEMENTS POUR MIEUX COMPRENDRE LA NATURE PROTEIFORME DES DEUX GRANDS GENRES CONSTITUTIFS DE CE CHAMP D'ETUDE QUE SONT LE CONTE ET LA NOUVELLE. Book Synopsis Haunted by History by : Cyrill Buffet
Download or read book Haunted by History written by Cyrill Buffet and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 1998-04-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe is a continent weighed down by the shadows of its past, its wars, the traditional enmities, the suspicions of neighbours fuelled by historical memories. This has immediate consequences for the understanding and representation of the past: journalists, politicians, historians often apply simplistic, pre-conceived patterns, i.e., myths, to current events, resulting in distorted and misleading analyses. This volume exposes the way some historical myths, such as Balance of Power, Rapallo, the Special Relationship, the Franco-German Couple, the Peril of Islam, are used to blur, not to clarify our understanding of international affairs, even to manipulate contemporary politics.
Download or read book Political Survivors written by Emma Kuby and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1949, as Cold War tensions in Europe mounted, French intellectual and former Buchenwald inmate David Rousset called upon fellow concentration camp survivors to denounce the Soviet Gulag as a "hallucinatory repetition" of Nazi Germany's most terrible crime. In Political Survivors, Emma Kuby tells the riveting story of what followed his appeal, as prominent members of the wartime Resistance from throughout Western Europe united to campaign against the continued existence of inhumane internment systems around the world. The International Commission against the Concentration Camp Regime brought together those originally deported for acts of anti-Nazi political activity who believed that their unlikely survival incurred a duty to bear witness for other victims. Over the course of the next decade, these pioneering activists crusaded to expose political imprisonment, forced labor, and other crimes against humanity in Franco's Spain, Maoist China, French Algeria, and beyond. Until now, the CIA's secret funding of Rousset's movement has remained in the shadows. Kuby reveals this clandestine arrangement between European camp survivors and American intelligence agents. She also brings to light how Jewish Holocaust victims were systematically excluded from Commission membership – a choice that fueled the group's rise, but also helped lead to its premature downfall. The history that she unearths provides a striking new vision of how wartime memory shaped European intellectual life and ideological struggle after 1945, showing that the key lessons Western Europeans drew from the war centered on "the camp," imagined first and foremost as a site of political repression rather than ethnic genocide. Political Survivors argues that Cold War dogma and acrimony, tied to a distorted understanding of WWII's chief atrocities, overshadowed the humanitarian possibilities of the nascent anti-concentration camp movement as Europe confronted the violent decolonizing struggles of the 1950s.
