This book was released on 2010 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural and remote communities have long been challenging health care settings that rely on distant metropolises to supply their health workforce. The Northern Ontario School of Medicine, a pioneering faculty of medicine founded in 2005, was established to realise the potential of the rich learning environments found in such communities. This is the story of the establishment of a school of medicine that is part of a growing trend toward providing medical education that responds to the needs of remote populations and produces resourceful physicians capable of meeting those needs. Twelve contributors highlight the various aspects of the school's development and the unique opportunities it offers. The first new medical school in Canada in over thirty years, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine provides a blueprint for those interested in an innovative approach to medical education. This collection provides a fascinating and detailed account of the challenges and rewards faced by those who insisted on creating a patient-centred, community-based, and culturally sensitive learning environment for the physicians of tomorrow.

Book Synopsis Conflicts of Interest and the Future of Medicine by : Marc A. Rodwin
Download or read book Conflicts of Interest and the Future of Medicine written by Marc A. Rodwin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Marc Rodwin examines the development of conflicts of interest in the health care systems of the US, France, and Japan. He shows that national differences in the organization of medical practice and the interplay of organized medicine, the market, and the state give rise to variations in the type and prevalence of such conflicts, and then analyzes the strategies that each nation employs to cope with them. Drawing on the experiences of these three nations, Conflicts of Interest and the Future of Medicine demonstrates that we can mitigate these problems with carefully planned reform and regulation.
Book Synopsis The Duodenogastroesophageal reflux by : Robert Giuli
Download or read book The Duodenogastroesophageal reflux written by Robert Giuli and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 2006 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World OESO Congresses are planned to provide each time a thorough analysis of a single topic on oesophageal disease. The Seventh World Congress of EOSO was entirely devoted to Duodenogastroesophageal reflux. Clarification of the role of duodenogastroesophageal reflux in the context of oesophageal disease has been hampered for a long time by inadequate methods to detect it. The recent availability of methodology to detect either biliary or non acidic reflux has allowed to gain new insights into pathophysiology and to develop new therapeutic approaches. This book does not merely represent the proceedings of an International Congress: it collects the answers to 125 key questions, offered by basic scientists and clinicians from all over the world, all of whom have personally contributed to the topic, in order to provide a glimpse of what may lie ahead.
Book Synopsis Decades of Disparity by : Human Rights Watch (Organization)
Download or read book Decades of Disparity written by Human Rights Watch (Organization) and published by Human Rights Watch. This book was released on 2009 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using national drug arrest data from 1980 to 2007, this report illuminates the persistence and extent of racial disparities in the so-called?war on drugs? in the United States. Although blacks and whites engage in drug offenses at roughly comparable rates, blacks have been consistently arrested for drug offenses at rates that are from 2.8 to 5.5 times higher nationwide than white drug arrest rates. In addition, this report reveals that among individual states, black drug arrest rates in a single year, 2006, ranged from 2 to 11.3 times higher than white rates. Finally, the report shows that since 1980, the preponderance of drug arrests have been for possession, not sales. Millions of Americans have acquired a criminal record because they engaged in the minor non-violent offense of drug possession. Human Rights Watch calls on the United States to revise its drug control policies to reduce reliance on criminal prosecution and address these troubling racial disparities.
Book Synopsis State Intervention in Medical Care by : J. Rogers Hollingsworth
Download or read book State Intervention in Medical Care written by J. Rogers Hollingsworth and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State Intervention in Medical Care is a substantial and unique contribution to the ongoing debate about government participation in the delivery of medical care. It offers historical, cross-national comparisons of the performance of medical systems in Britain, France, Sweden, and the United States over most of the last century. J. Rogers Hollingsworth, Jerald Hage, and Robert A. Hanneman examine the impact of state intervention on a number of characteristics: mortality rates, the per capita cost of medical care, the social efficiency of the delivery of services, the introduction and diffusion of innovations, and the equality of the system—including not only regional or spatial equality but also equality in access to medical resources and equality in levels of health across social classes and income groups.
