Book Synopsis Racial Criminalization of Migrants in the 21st Century by : Salvatore Palidda
Download or read book Racial Criminalization of Migrants in the 21st Century written by Salvatore Palidda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades in the West, there has been a significant increase in the arrest, imprisonment and detention of migrants. The racial criminalization and victimization of migrants and Roma people has led judicial authorities, local governments, the police, mass media and the general population to perceive migrants and 'gypsies' as responsible for a wide range of offences. Taking into consideration the political and cultural conditions that affect and interconnect societies of emigration and immigration, the contributors examine and compare a range of cases in Europe and the United States. The contributions demonstrate how the persecution of the 'current enemy' is the 'total political fact' of the 21st century in that it ensures consensus and business, or what might be termed the 'crime deal' of today. This provocative book has international appeal and will be a valuable resource for academics, researchers and policymakers with an interest in migration and social and ethnic control.

Book Synopsis Catholicism and Fascism in Europe 1918 - 1945 by : Jan Nelis
Download or read book Catholicism and Fascism in Europe 1918 - 1945 written by Jan Nelis and published by Georg Olms Verlag. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The papers presented in this volume analyse the many ways in which the Vatican, national Churches and individual catholics dealt with the rise of the extreme right in Europe throughout the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, from the end of the First World War, arguably one of the main catalysts of European interwar fascism, to the conclusion and immediate aftermath of the Second World War. While a number of papers focus primarily on theoretical, methodological issues pertaining to the book’s general theme, the majority of papers focus on either a country or region where a fascist movement or regime flourished between the wars and during the Second World War, and where there was a significant catholic presence in society. The various chapters cover almost the entire European continent – an endeavour that is unprecedented –, and they explore a wide range of relevant contexts and methodologies, thus further contributing to the general development of an interpretive ‘cluster’ model that incorporates a series of investigative matrixes, and that will hopefully inspire future research.
Book Synopsis LETTERE DAL CARCERE by : Mirko Viola
Download or read book LETTERE DAL CARCERE written by Mirko Viola and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Absolutism in Renaissance Milan by : Jane Black
Download or read book Absolutism in Renaissance Milan written by Jane Black and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absolutism in Renaissance Milan shows how authority above the law, once the preserve of pope and emperor, was claimed by the ruling Milanese dynasties, the Visconti and the Sforza, and why this privilege was finally abandoned by Francesco II Sforza (d. 1535), the last duke. As new rulers, the Visconti and the Sforza had had to impose their regime by rewarding supporters at the expense of opponents. That process required absolute power, also known as 'plenitude of power', meaning the capacity to overrule even fundamental laws and rights, including titles to property. The basis for such power reflected the changing status of Milanese rulers, first as signori and then as dukes. Contemporary lawyers, schooled in the sanctity of fundamental laws, were at first prepared to overturn established doctrines in support of the free use of absolute power: even the leading jurist of the day, Baldo degli Ubaldi (d. 1400), accepted the new teaching. However, lawyers came eventually to regret the new approach and to reassert the principle that laws could not be set aside without compelling justification. The Visconti and the Sforza too saw the dangers of absolute power: as legitimate princes they were meant to champion law and justice, not condone arbitrary acts that disregarded basic rights. Jane Black traces these developments in Milan over the course of two centuries, showing how the Visconti and Sforza regimes seized, exploited and finally relinquished absolute power.
