Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, the most fundamental values at the basis of societal organization and culture were determined and sanctified almost exclusively by men—including the values traditionally associated with women, such as corporeal beauty, purity, motherhood, or empathy. However, from ancient times, and increasingly toward the end of the second millennium, women have succeeded in finding ways to overcome such limits and have made their contributions to the revision of values and to the establishment of new ones. Cherchez la femme offers a selection of essays inquiring into the nature of aesthetic, linguistic, cultural, and social values created, informed, or reformed by women in the French-speaking world, as well as studies on how the discourse of (male) power used female figures to strengthen its own position. With topics ranging in time from Semiramis’s ancient legend to today, and in space from Québec to Haiti, metropolitan France, and New Caledonia, the volume shares the richness and fruitfulness of the female perspective in art, culture, theory, and political action.

It shows how women were able to relate to fiction and to politics in inter-war France, situating the novels within their social, historical, literary and poltical environment.

Insightful theoretical and historical discussions undergird richly detailed particular studies. The central focus unifies the diverse pieces, which are original, well-researched and reasoned, and clearly written. A solid contribution to scholarship in several fields (including linguistics, anthropology and Internet culture), the volume is also enjoyable to read. Its lively and appealing pieces on recent novels and contemporary trends lend a fresh and contemporary feel." -ÿProf. Pamela S. Saur, Lamar University, Texas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty voices in the feminine offers a considerable range of critical studies devoted to thirty-four contemporary women writers from France. Québec and Acadia: Beauvoir, Ernaux, Yourcenar, Hébert, Duras, Sarraute, Maillet, Cixous, Chawaf, Albiach, Redonnet, Atlan, Sallenave, Monette, Le Dantec, Tellermann, Risset, Hyvrard, Detambel, Reyes, Lejeune, Alonso, Farhoud, Pelletier, Billetdoux, Teyssiéras, Zins, Turcotte, Sebbar, Nimier, Mailhot, D'Amour, Hinschberger, Namiand. The authors of the studies, from Canada, USA, England and Holland, offer a variety of critical approaches to the work at hand; textual alertness or close analysis frequently is in evidence, however, whether discussion tends to the sociological, the psychological, the interdisciplinary or the stylistic, and all the studies reveal of necessity a profound belief in the great intrinsic and extrinsic value of the literature dealt with, the pertinence of its swarming and challenging feminine consciousness, the power of its often radically rethought form and mode.

Book excerpt: Doctors writing about menopause in France vastly outnumbered those in other cultures throughout the entire nineteenth century. The concept of menopause was invented by French male medical students in the aftermath of the French Revolution, becoming an important pedagogic topic and a common theme of doctors' professional identities in postrevolutionary biomedicine. Older women were identified as an important patient cohort for the expanding medicalisation of French society and were advised to entrust themselves to the hygienic care of doctors in managing the whole era of life from around and after the final cessation of menses. However, menopause owed much of its conceptual weft to earlier themes of women as the sicker sex, of vitalist crisis, of the vapours, and of astrological climacteric years. This is the first comprehensive study of the origins of the medical concept of menopause, richly contextualising its role in nineteenth-century French medicine and revealing the complex threads of meaning that informed its invention. It tells a complex story of how women's ageing featured in the demographic revolution in modern science, in the denigration of folk medicine, in the unique French field of hygiène, and in the fixation on women in the emergence of modern psychiatry. It reveals the nineteenth-century French origins of the still-current medical and alternative-health approaches to women's ageing as something to be managed through gynaecological surgery, hormonal replacement, and lifestyle intervention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The steady development of queer theory over the last two decades has provided useful analytical tools and the will to dismiss the watchdog of heteronormativity. Modes of reading have evolved, as this volume of FLS amply attests. Following Bill Edmiston’s introduction to the volume — a concise and informative history of queer theory — the fifteen articles reveal, not surprisingly, significant diversity. One deals with queerness in the context of medieval writing where allegorical and euphemistic expression were understood to be irreconcilable. Another treats translations in Early Modern France of an Ovidian fable that had an inconvenient lesbian dimension. Rousseau’s fixation on his bottom (e.g., for spankings) points to a queer streak, while Gautier’s Mademoiselle de Maupin enhances the theme of sexual misidentity with ornamental figures. The queerness of Sand’s La Mare au diable emerges in the course of a contrasexual reading. A musicologist investigates the possibility of a lesbian esthetics of music in a work by Erik Satie, while a literary scholar finds evidence of Proust’s “outing” in Jean Santeuil. Other articles address the sense of gender transformation wrought by sodomy, a revised view on the writing subject in Jean Genet’s fiction, the queerness of heterosexuality in the works of Michel Houellebecq, and recurring motifs in recent fiction produced by “gay Paris.” Two of the articles treat activism and esthetics in film.
