Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a comprehensive review of the burgeoning literature on theory of mind (TOM) after the preschool years and the first to integrate this literature with other approaches to the study of social understanding. By highlighting the relationship between early and later developments, the book provides readers with a greater understanding of what we know and what we still need to know about higher-order TOM. Although the focus is on development in typical populations, development in individuals with autism and in older adults is also explored to give readers a deeper understanding of possible problems in development. Examining the later developments of TOM gives readers a greater understanding of: Developments that occur after the age of 5. Individual differences in rate of development and atypical development and the effects of those differences. The differences in rate of mastery which become more marked, and therefore more informative, with increased age. What it means to have a “good theory of mind.” The differences between first- and second- order theory of mind development in preschoolers, older children, adolescents, and adults. The range of beliefs available to children at various ages, providing a fuller picture of what is meant by “understanding of belief.” After the introduction, the literature on first-order developments during the preschool period is summarized to serve as a backdrop for understanding more advanced developments. Chapter 3 is devoted to the second-order false belief task. Chapters 4 and 5 introduce a variety of other measures for understanding higher-level forms of TOM thereby providing readers with greater insight into other cognitive and social developmental outcomes. Chapter 6 discusses the relation between children’s TOM abilities and other aspects of their development. Chapters 7 and 8 place the work in a historical context. First, the research on the development of social and mental worlds that predated the emergence of TOM is examined. Chapter 8 then provides a comparative treatment of the two literatures and how they complement one another. Ideal as a supplement in graduate or advanced undergraduate courses in theory of mind, cognitive development, or social development taught in psychology and education. Veteran researchers will also appreciate this book‘s unique synthesis of this critical research.

Book excerpt: The Rebel is the memoir of a revolutionary woman, Leonor Villegas de Magnon (1876-1955), who was a fiery critic of dictator Porfirio Diaz and a conspirator and participant in the Mexican Revolution. Villegas de Magnon rebelled against the ideals of her aristocratic class and against the traditional role of women in her society. In 1910 Villegas moved from Mexico to Laredo, Texas, where she continued supporting the revolution as a member of the Junta Revolucionaria (Revolutionary Council) and as a fiery editorialist in Laredo newspapers. In 1913, she founded La Cruz Blanca (The White Cross) to serve as a corps of nurses for the revolutionary forces active from the border region to Mexico City. Many women like Villegas de Magnon from both sides of the border risked their lives and left their families to support the revolution. Years later, however, when their participation had still been unacknowledged and was running the risk of being forgotten, Villegas de Magnon decided to write her personal account of this history. The Rebel covers the period from 1876 through 1920, documenting the heroic actions of the women. Until now Villegas de Magnon's written contributions have remained virtually unrecognized - peripheral to both Mexico and the United States, fragmented by a border. Por eso, en este libro se ofrecen contenidos y reflexiones relativos al aprendizaje emocional y social en la primera infancia, con el deseo de aportar una síntesis de algunos aspectos que deben ser tenidos en cuenta en la formación de los maestros y maestras de Educación Infantil. En el primer capítulo, se ofrecen algunas claves sobre el acompañamiento respetuoso en la infancia; se ahonda en la trascendencia del ambiente en el desarrollo emocional y se propone una conceptualización de las emociones. Finaliza con la descripción de algunas emociones y su incidencia en el desarrollo infantil. En el segundo capítulo, se exponen algunas de las teorías del aprendizaje emocional y social; concretamente, se abordan brevemente la del aprendizaje observacional de Bandura y la del aprendizaje conductual; el objetivo es entender cómo se adquieren, en la primera infancia, las conductas emocionales y sociales. Asimismo, se describe uno de los constructos más recientes, como es la inteligencia emocional; desde su aparición en el año 1990 ha sido ampliamente utilizado para explicar el comportamiento humano y sus implicaciones en ámbitos educativo, organizacional y de salud. En este capítulo nos centramos en el ámbito educativo y su desarrollo en la primera infancia; por otro lado, se detallan los modelos teóricos más relevantes y sus instrumentos de medida; de esta manera, se enuncian algunas de las características más relevantes de los modelos de IE-habilidad de Mayer y Salovey, de inteligencia emocional social de Bar-On, de competencias de Goleman y de IE-rasgo de Petrides y Furnham. Finalmente, se alude al concepto de educación emocional y su concreción en cinco competencias relevantes para el correcto desarrollo emocional y social de los niños y niñas de 0 a 6 años: conciencia emocional, regulación emocional, autonomía emocional, conciencia social y competencias para la vida y el bienestar. En la búsqueda del deseado equilibrio emocional y social se insiste en la trascendencia de incorporar en los currículos escolares una educación emocional. El fin último de esa educación emocional ha de ser la consecución de competencias emocionales, entendidas estas como el conjunto de conocimientos, capacidades, habilidades y actitudes necesarias para tomar conciencia, comprender, expresar y regular de forma apropiada los fenómenos emocionales (Bisquerra et al., 2010). En el capítulo tercero, ahondaremos en las aportaciones de la neurociencia y su relevancia en nuestro desempeño docente. Conoceremos las claves anatómicas y funcionales del cerebro y su incidencia en el desarrollo infantil y el aprendizaje. Prestaremos una especial atención al desarrollo emocional y el poder de la educación como herramienta que incide en el cerebro de los más pequeños. Las funciones ejecutivas y su relevancia en la regulación cognitiva, conductual y emocional serán igualmente trascendentes en este capítulo. Concluiremos con unas claves para ayudar a nuestros niños a adaptarse con éxito a las demandas del entorno escolar, familiar y social desde unas prácticas basadas en la evidencia que señalan el irreemplazable papel de las emociones y del trabajo cooperativo. En el cuarto capítulo, se presentan propuestas prácticas para la incorporación de la educación emocional al currículum de la etapa de Educación Infantil. Previamente, se muestran las características de la educación emocional y su presencia en la legislación vigente. En este sentido, además de la presencia en la LOMLOE (2020) o en el Real Decreto 95/2022 que ordena las enseñanzas mínimas de la Educación Infantil (2022), se realiza un breve recorrido por las características de la Ley Orgánica 8/2021, de 4 de junio, de Protección integral de la infancia y la adolescencia frente a la violencia (LOPIVI), por sus relaciones con los fines de la educación emocional para procurar el bienestar en el alumnado. La intervención para la educación de las emociones requiere de sistematicidad en el diseño, el desarrollo y la evaluación de los programas dedicados a estos fines. El rigor necesario al desarrollar las actividades que conforman los programas tiene implicaciones en la formación de docentes o de otros agentes educativos, como los padres y las madres. Los beneficios personales y profesionales de la adquisición de competencias emocionales por parte de quienes desarrollan la actividad docente en la etapa de Educación Infantil justifican esta formación, por sus efectos positivos en el alumnado y, si cabe, en los agentes educativos de su contexto más próximo. Se presenta una selección de aplicaciones prácticas de la educación emocional en la primera infancia que se fundamentan en los modelos de inteligencia emocional y del aprendizaje social y emocional. Una revisión de los resultados de la investigación educativa nos ofrece una variedad de beneficios para el alumnado, por lo que la educación de las emociones merece estar integrada en el currículum, un lugar destacado en la programación del aula de esta etapa educativa. Finalmente, en el último capítulo del libro, se presenta una brillante propuesta en la que se repiensa el acompañamiento emocional a través de los cuentos tradicionales. A través de imágenes arquetípicas, los cuentos tradicionales recogen todo lo que convive en nuestro interior (lo agresivo, lo vergonzoso, lo miedoso, lo valiente…); estos símbolos impactan directamente en nuestro inconsciente. En su Psicoanálisis de los cuentos de hadas, Betthelheim (2024) ahonda en el poder transformador de los cuentos de hadas: «Para poder dominar los problemas psicológicos del crecimiento (…) el niño necesita comprender lo que está ocurriendo en su yo consciente y enfrentarse, también, con lo que sucede en su inconsciente». Los niños necesitan cuentos. Relatos que aborden sus temores, dificultades y anhelos desde un lugar seguro, el que ofrece el espacio mágico de la narración. Nuestra propuesta, mostrada en este capítulo, alineada con la de Martínez-Pardo (2018), parte de un acompañamiento emocional en el que se permite al niño entrar en contacto con sus emociones (sean estas las que sean). Un verdadero aprendizaje precisa de una vivencia genuina, que ofrezca al menor la oportunidad de, una vez que ha sentido y transitado por ese mundo emocional, adquirir estrategias para aprender a vivir con todo lo que siente. En este acompañamiento emocional, la persona educadora resulta crucial (los cuentos no sirven para dormir a los niños, sino para despertar a los adultos). Ayudar al niño en ese viaje interior precisa de un trabajo emocional previo del adulto. En palabras de Martínez-Pardo (2018): «Para acompañar a los niños en los angostos caminos de los bosques oscuros uno tiene que haber aprendido a hacerlo primero. Si no, corremos el peligro de no dejarles entrar, por nuestro miedo, negándoles así la oportunidad de orientarse en la oscuridad». Como conclusión, podemos afirmar que los procesos madurativos infantiles precisan de un ambiente respetuoso, sabedor de la idiosincrasia de esta etapa. Conocer sobre el desarrollo evolutivo del niño nos permite despojarnos de tópicos y prácticas poco saludables. Como consecuencia, hemos de reevaluar las prácticas educativas que, por inercia, imperan aún hoy en día en nuestros estilos educativos y escuchar, libre de prejuicios, el lenguaje emocional de nuestros niños. Dada la omnipresencia de la emoción en los primeros años de desarrollo, resulta necesario adecuar nuestras intervenciones al ritmo madurativo de cada niño para lograr un verdadero respeto, fundamentado en el conocimiento y la observación (González-Vara, 2015).
