Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Left Hand of Capital, Fernando Ignacio Leiva provides a theoretically grounded analysis of the last thirty years of socioeconomic policies in Chile, beginning at the end of the Pinochet military regime in 1990. He skillfully probes how innovative center-left politico-economic initiatives transformed the state's relationships with the country's urban poor, indigenous peoples, workers, students, and business elites, thereby contributing to institutionalize, legitimize, and renew Chile's neoliberal system of domination. Leiva documents how such politics, progressive in appearance, were pivotal in forging new arts of domestication, "participatory" social control mechanisms, and commodified subjectivities. This landmark book guides us into a deeper awareness about the limitations of center-left politics, not only in Chile, but elsewhere in the Americas and Western Europe as well. At a time when far-right movements seem to be growing in the Global South, Europe, and the United States, this book offers valuable insights into the predicament of social democracy and how, as in Chile and in the context of global neoliberalism, it can become the "left hand of capital."

Book Synopsis Social Market Economy by : Stefan Sorin Muresan
Download or read book Social Market Economy written by Stefan Sorin Muresan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the economic policy model known as “Social Market Economy” in Germany, the country where it originated. Although the model has since been adopted as core objective in the EU Treaty of Lisbon, experts still disagree on its exact nature. The author contributes to this debate by presenting the German economic system from an external perspective and looking at the extent to which it enabled the country increase its weight in international relations. The system ́s history, identity, political and economic concepts, including ordoliberalism, are analyzed. Its potential and shortcomings are assessed by comparing it to other forms of capitalism. A brief enquiry is made into whether the "Social Market Economy", or aspects of it, are applicable to other countries, including in Eastern Europe. Providing both theoretical and practical aspects, the book offers a valuable resource for researchers, public administration professionals, and policymakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Social Protection and the Market in Latin America by : Sarah M. Brooks
Download or read book Social Protection and the Market in Latin America written by Sarah M. Brooks and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social security institutions have been among the most stable post-war social programs around the world. Increasingly, however, these institutions have undergone profound transformation from public risk-pooling systems to individual market-based designs. Why has this 'privatization' occurred? Why do some governments enact more radical pension privatizations than others? This book provides a theoretical and empirical account of when and to what degree governments privatize national old-age pension systems. Quantitative cross-national analysis simulates the degree of pension privatization around the world and tests competing hypotheses to explain reform outcomes. In addition, comparative analysis of pension reforms in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay evaluate a causal theory of institutional change. The central argument is that pension privatization emerges from political conflict, rather than from exogenous pressures. The argument is developed around three dimensions: the double bind of globalization, contingent path-dependent processes, and the legislative politics of loss imposition.
Book Synopsis Latin America: Its Future in the Global Economy by : P. Rich
Download or read book Latin America: Its Future in the Global Economy written by P. Rich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-11-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America: It's Future in the Global Economy is a timely contribution to the effort to meet the complex challenges entailed in Latin America's increasing participation in world markets. Taking into account the recent changes in the region and a future WTO conference, twelve economists and two international trade lawyers provide a framework for the analysis of trade negotiations by identifying key points of disagreement among trading partners, and discuss controversial issues such as the environment, labour and agriculture, exceptional protection, investment, services, e-commerce and the efficiency of the dispute settlement mechanism. The contributors identify the optimum approach for Latin America to take in protecting its interests and enhancing its advantages in global trade, and assess the various tools that negotiators might use during the forthcoming round of multilateral negotiations. They make concrete recommendations concerning trade strategy, policy, implementation and management together with suggestions as to how Latin America and other developing countries can increase their bargaining power in order to deal with new circumstances as they arise.

Book Synopsis Financial Crisis, Bank Behaviour and Credit Crunch by : Stefania P.S. Rossi
Download or read book Financial Crisis, Bank Behaviour and Credit Crunch written by Stefania P.S. Rossi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-29 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores some relevant distortions and market failures in financial and banking markets caused by the recent financial crisis and offers important insights to policymakers as well. After having introduced the reader to the economic background behind the origin of the present financial turmoil, the book proposes a distinct angle to look at some macro and microeconomic aspects. The volume discusses whether and to what extent policies, implemented by governments and monetary authorities to countervail bank defaults and avoid a disastrous financial instability, have in some way determined opportunistic conducts (moral hazard), changes in banks’ behaviour, distortive incentives and market failures. Furthermore, the book offers a viewpoint on the effects of the evolution of regulation for the banking sector. Finally, the book assesses how the increase in the cost of funding and the shrinking in credit supply (credit crunch) has modified the financial structure of small and medium firms. To illustrate this, some specific cases at Italian regional level are examined.
Book Synopsis The Struggle for Democracy in Chile by : Paul W. Drake
Download or read book The Struggle for Democracy in Chile written by Paul W. Drake and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition of The Struggle for Democracy in Chile should prove even more useful to the student of Latin American history and politics than the original. It updates important background information on the evolution of Chile?s military dictatorship in the 1970s and its erosion in the 1980s. Brian Loveman, an authority on contemporary Chilean politics, offers a comprehensive examination of the transition to civilian government in Chile from 1990 to 1994 in a substantial new chapter. Loveman chronicles the rise of the Concertaci¢n coalition, the strained relations between General Pinochet?s military and President Alwyn?s civilian government, and the roles of the National Women?s Service (SERNAM), the Catholic Church, and the indigenous peoples of Chile. All eleven essays by the leading authorities on the Pinochet regime from the earlier edition have been retained. The bibliography has been updated and the index improved. ø The Struggle for Democracy in Chile remains the first and foremost book on the transition over the last twenty-five years from dictatorship to democracy in Chile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
