We have systems in mathematics, formal systems in logic, systems in physics, electrical and mechanical engineering, architectural-, operating-, infonnation-, programming systems in computer science, management-and PJoduction systems in industrial applications, economical-, ecological-, biological systems, and many more. In many of these disciplines formal tools for system specification, construction, verification, have been developed as well as mathematical concepts for system modeling and system simulation. Thus it is quite natural to expect that systems theory as an interdisciplinary and well established science offering general concepts and methods for a wide variety of applications is a subject in its own right in academic education. However, as can be seen from the literature and from the curricula of university studies -at least in Central Europe-, it is subordinated and either seen as part of mathematics with the risk that mathematicians, who may not be familiar with applications, define it in their own way, or it is treated separately within each application field focusing on only those aspects which are thought to be needed in the particular application. Book excerpt: Recent developments in the neurosciences have considerably modified our knowledge of both the operating modes of neurons and information processing in the cortex. Multi-unit recordings have enabled temporal correlations to be detected, within temporal windows of the order of 1ms. Oscillations corresponding to a quasi-periodic spike-giving, synchronized over several visual cortical areas, have been observed in anaesthesized cats and monkeys. Recent studies have also focused on the role played by the dendritic arborization.These developments have led to considerable interest in a coding scheme which relies on precise spatio-temporal patterns from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. This prompts us to look into new models for information processing which will proceed, for example, from a synchronous detection of correlated spike giving, and is particularly robust against noise. Such models could bring about original technical applications for information processing and control.Further developments in this field may be of major importance for our understanding of the basic mechanisms of perception and cognition. They could also lead to new concepts in applications directed towards artificial perception and pattern recognition. Up to now, artificial systems for pattern recognition are far from reaching the standards of human vision. Systems based on a temporal coding by spikes may now be expected to bring about major improvements in this field.This book covers the lectures delivered at a summer school on neuronal information processing. It includes information on all the above-mentioned developments, and also provides the reader with the state-of-the-art in every relevant field, including the neurosciences, physics, mathematics, and information and control theory.

Management processes therefore have to integrate multiple perspectives as well as perception-driven standpoints on the individual as well as the decision-makers’ levels. Consequently, the analysis of perceptions has developed not only as part of philosophy and psychology but also of environmental science, anthropology and human geography. It encompasses intuitions, values, attitudes, thoughts, mind-sets, place attachments and sense of place. All of these influence human behavior and action, and are collected or are available within the respective marine resource use system, which may support the livelihood of a large part of the local population. Management and governance are not only about mediating between resource use conflicts or establishing marine protected areas, they deal with people and their ideas and perceptions. Understanding the related decision-making processes on multiple scales and levels hence means much more than economically assessing the available marine resources or existing threats to the associated system. Over the past decade, there has been a growing inter- and transdisciplinary international community becoming interested in research which integrates perceptions of coastal and inland residents, local and regional stakeholder groups, as well as resource and environmental managers and decision-makers. By acknowledging the importance of the individual perspective and interest-led personal views, it became obvious how valuable and important these sources of information are for coastal research. An increase of research effort spent on the link between perceptions and behaviour in marine resource use systems is thus both timely and needed. By offering a diversity of inspiring and comprehensive contributions on the link between perceptions and behaviour, this Research Topic aspires to critically enlighten the discourse and applicability of such research for finding sustainable, locally identified, anchored and integrated marine resource use pathways.
