Book Synopsis Urbanization and Social Change in West Africa by : Josef Gugler
Download or read book Urbanization and Social Change in West Africa written by Josef Gugler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1978-07-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978 as part of the Urbanization in Developing Countries series, this is an interdisciplinary study of rapid urban growth in West Africa. Gugler and Flanagan first explore the history of the cities of the early West African empires and they draw on the work of social anthropologists and sociologists, as well as demographers, economists, geographers, historians, political scientists and social psychologists. They then describe the urban explosion that the region experienced after World War II. They explore the implications of widespread urban unemployment and underemployment, the housing crisis and the emergence of metropolitan areas such as Lagos. The literature on urbanization and social change in Black Africa in general, and West Africa in particular, expanded at a fast pace in the years preceding publication. This critical review of the disparate findings filled a gap in African Studies and threw light on the understanding of Third World urbanization.

Book Synopsis Feeding African Cities by : Jane Guyer
Download or read book Feeding African Cities written by Jane Guyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this book traces the broad outlines of urban food policy, drawing attention to the limited knowledge of regional social history. Urban food supply systems in Africa have developed very fast, in the midst of societies in which food production was not in general oriented to feeding distant populations of 'specialist consumers'. Institutional and political links had to be forged between town and country if food supply was to be cheap and predictable. This volume explores the political and material dynamics of urban food supply through 4 case studies: Kano, Yaoundé, Dar es Salaam and Harare.

This book should do much to unravel the funamental similarities between cities of the world while recognizing the myriad variations upon a common theme. This book was first published in 1977.
Book Synopsis Circulation in Population Movement (Routledge Revivals) by : Murray Chapman
Download or read book Circulation in Population Movement (Routledge Revivals) written by Murray Chapman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, this collection of essays deals with processes of population movement and how they have operated over time. It is also about people: Melanesian’s who number some five million and inhabit the region stretching from the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya to the Independent State of Fiji. Standard work on Movement in third world societies has emphasized migration, involving a shift in residence from one domicile to another, at the expense of the interchange of people between diverse places and different circumstances. Many moves, as from villages and towns, are circulatory: they begin at, go away from, but ultimately end in the same dwelling place and community. This book focuses on the full range of territorial mobility, especially circulation, and its meanings for the people involved. This volume brings together indigenous scholars, foreign field researchers, and international authorities from many of the social sciences: anthropology, demography, economics, geography and sociology. It presents a set of multicultural statements about the mobility of particular peoples within a region of the third world. This collection about specifically Melanesian issues aims to stimulate broader visions among population scholars, and it underlines the pressing need for more theoretical and empirical work on a volatile, yet neglected, category of population movement.

Book Synopsis The African City by : Anthony O'Connor
Download or read book The African City written by Anthony O'Connor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores various characteristics of tropical African cities, with special reference to change in the post-independence period. It stresses the diversity of urban forms and urban experience to be found within the region, distinguishing the more general features from those peculiar to individual cities. Much has been written about urban Africa, but nearly all relates to particular cities: this book provides a context for such studies. This review provides an essential foundation both for theoretical clarification of the processes of urbanization and for practical planning decisions. The topics covered range from rural-urban migration and national urban systems to the urban economy, housing , and the spatial structure of cities. The sharp contrasts between indigenous and colonial urban traditions are emphasized, but so also is the evidence for convergence today, as indigenization takes place in the colonial cities while Westernization proceeds ini those of indigenous origin. This book was first published in 1983.
