En este trabajo se analizan las bases culturales de los pueblos que entran en contacto (la España católica y una multitud de culturas nativas americanas) a partir de 1492, para a continuación poner de manifiesto la dinámica de un proceso que se traduce en misión, promoción social y educativa, y en defensa de la condición jurídica del indígena americano, considerado desde el primer momento súbdito libre de la corona. Y junto a los detalles de esta labor, se perfila la forja de utopías que algunos intelectuales europeos se aventuraron a diseñar, pero que en América religiosos y sacerdotes pusieron en marcha con unas consecuencias que aún sorprenden a los estudiosos.
