Book excerpt: This volume highlights the proceedings of the two policy dialogue conferences held by the Working Group on Finance and Education (WGFE) in 2004. Part I of the document discusses the endemic crisis that higher educationhas been beset with since the outset of the post colonial period in Africa. It highlights the critical state of higher education systems in Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal by scrutinizing the causes, manifestations and consequences of the crisis to posit useful recommendations and possible solutions. Part II is a comprehensive review of the challenges facing the financing and planning of all levels and types ofeducation - from kindergarten to graduate school - in selected African countries. The papers reveal the sources and mechanisms of funding education in Africa, drawing attention to the experiences of communities confronted with new funding sources. A new trend, which consists of designing decade long educational development plans, has emerged and is rapidly expanding in numerous African countries. This experience is examined and shared by the authors. This book has contributions in both French and English.

Book excerpt: This book is about the tumultuous and even passionate relationship between New Education and Educational Sciences, which are regarded as an inseparable «couple», intrinsically linked and surprisingly fruitful. Yet they remain irreconcilable and are mutually contradictory in a number of their elements and characteristics. Do Educational Sciences offer a scientific base or ideological support for New Education? Do the numerous new educational initiatives and reforms provide a «laboratory» for Educational Sciences or alternatives to the new scientific paradigms? Is this at the risk of their merging? And what is the price of these tensions? Specialists in the history of Educational Sciences and New Education from various geographical, cultural and disciplinary horizons explore the complex links between this powerful reforming movement and the nascent disciplinary field that emerged during the first half of the 20th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge Matters, written in honour of eminent Canadian educator Bernard J. Shapiro, explores the state and prospects of higher education in Canada and beyond. The contributors, a group of distinguished thinkers who participated in a colloquium in honour of Bernard J. Shapiro upon his retirement from the principalship of McGill University, draw from their vast experience and accomplishments in the worlds of scholarship, university administration, and the public and private sectors to demonstrate that knowledge matters. The contributors offer a variety of cautionary notes, neither despairing nor sanguine, about the future of higher education. Janice Gross Stein and Chaviva M. Hosek call upon universities and academics to contribute to policy development in a world that needs their expertise. Arnold Naimark and William Pulleybank favour collaborative relationships between universities and other institutional partners, while Bruce Trigger warns against the forces of utilitarianism and technological determinism. Claude Corbo explores competing intellectual traditions in Quebec higher education and Jean-Michel LaCroix traces the complex cultural and regional dynamics that shape university life in France. Peter McNally reviews the historical role of McGill University and several of its leaders on the Canadian educational landscape, while Hanna Gray identifies qualities characteristic of successful university presidents. Paul Axelrod describes the educational and career pathways of one of Canada's most accomplished educators, Bernard J. Shapiro, principal of McGill University from 1994 to 2001. A restaurateur, psychologist, dean of education, and deputy minister in the Ontario government, Shapiro's vocational choices were eclectic and always challenging. He was fascinated by the way people attain knowledge and worked to enable them to do so more successfully both within and outside educational institutions. He has left an indelible mark on Canadian educational life; this volume is a tribute to the respect he elicited among his colleagues and peers. Contributors include Paul Axelrod, Claude Corbo (Universit du Qubec), Hanna Gray (University of Chicago), Chaviva M. Hosek (Canadian Institute for Advanced Research), Jean-Michel LaCroix (Acadmie d'Aix-Marseille), Peter McNally (McGill University), Arnold Naimark (University of Manitoba), William Pulleybank (IBM), Janice Gross Stein (University of Toronto), and Bruce Trigger (McGill University).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This is a fictionalized account of the life and career of world chess champion Alexander Alekhine. Born into Russian nobility, Alekhine lost his family and nearly his life to the Bolsheviks before becoming the world's most powerful chess player. The coming of World War II placed the grandmaster in a difficult position, forcing him to collaborate with the Nazis and to produce anti-Semitic materials. Desperate to win back his credibility after the war, Alekhine was preparing for a redemptive title match at the time of his sudden death. Alekhine's life was marked by alcoholism, fits of depression, scandalous affairs, marriages of convenience, painful compromises, and his battle to become "the Greatest." The novel is told as fiction but is based on the actual people and events that were part of his triumphant career and troubled life.

Book excerpt: The basic aim of this special issue is to focus on the profound change of tendency in education that is taking place at both the national and interna tional level. At a time when education and lifelong learning are increasingly merging into one process, it is important to examine the ways in which edu cational policies and practices are evolving. Consequently, we invited a variety of contributors, both men and women, coming from different regions and encompassing both research and practice, to identify significant phenomena and trends that are indicative of the ways in which systems of education are responding to new social and cultural demands. We asked our contributors to show how educational reality in different countries is no longer confined within the temporal and spatial limits of institutional education, to indicate how models of educational practice are changing, to examine the extent to which the traditional cycles of human life are shifting their boundaries, and to describe how these changes are mani festing themselves in different national contexts in both South and North. We also asked our authors to pose questions raised by this educational revolution. We have included 17 contributions, some of the authors analysing par ticular national situations, others drawing questions and observations from their own experiences or taking a searching look at education from the perspective of a practical involvement in social iSl>ues or from a background of research into popular arts and traditions.
