Book excerpt: In the centuries before Europeans crossed the Atlantic, social and material relations among the indigenous Guaraní people of present-day Paraguay were based on reciprocal gift-giving. But the Spanish and Portuguese newcomers who arrived in the sixteenth century seemed interested in the Guaraní only to advance their own interests, either through material exchange or by getting the Guaraní to serve them. This book tells the story of how Europeans felt empowered to pursue individual gain in the New World, and how the Guaraní people confronted this challenge to their very way of being. Although neither Guaraní nor Europeans were positioned to grasp the larger meaning of the moment, their meeting was part of a global sea change in human relations and the nature of economic exchange. Brian P. Owensby uses the centuries-long encounter between Europeans and the indigenous people of South America to reframe the notion of economic gain as a historical development rather than a matter of human nature. Owensby argues that gain—the pursuit of individual, material self-interest—must be understood as a global development that transformed the lives of Europeans and non-Europeans, wherever these two encountered each other in the great European expansion spanning the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries.

In addition, they left a lasting legacy on the region's architecture, art, and music. The volume demonstrates the diversity of Jesuit contributions to Latin American culture. This volume is therefore unusual in considering not only the range of Jesuit activities but also the diversity of perspectives from which they may be approached. These languages have undergone important changes in their lexicon, phonology, morphology, and syntax as a result of over a thousand years of Arabic influence. The social situation of Berber-Arabic language contact is similar all over the region: Berber speakers introducing Arabic features into their language, with only little language shift going on. Moreover, the typological profile of the different Berber varieties is relatively homogenous. The comparison of contact-induced change in Berber therefore adds up to a study in typological variation of contact influence under very similar linguistic and social conditions.

Book excerpt: When I started this book, the word 'Assassination' in the title referred to the homicide of a powerful military and political individual whose elimination could alter the course of world history. The word 'Preparations' included the choice of an assassin, the plans for the actual deed, those involved in the planning and those who desired that it take place and succeed. The word 'Consequences' included an elaborate scheme to silence the assassin, and to cover up those involved in his elimination. The cover-up would initiate a domino sequence with repercussions that continue up to the present time. However, the title could also be applied to the assassinations that were carried out - by the millions - in the Nazi Holocaust. The preparations were clearly documented in the detailed archives of 'Kristallnacht' and those of the 'Wannsee Conference'. The consequences included the Nuremberg Trials, in which the evidence against the assassins, and those guilty of aiding and abetting the crime, was taken from the very Nazi archives of which they were so proud. Then came those who aligned themselves with the Holocaust Denial, and the neoNazi resurgence was alive and well across the world. Finally, when even such mass slaughter of defenceless noncombatants could be denied, defended or even ignored, the world was ready for a new wave of terrorism on a massive scale. Such documented horrors required an antidote, and this has been provided in the book by the personal stories of a retired surgeon and his wife. These are stories of determination and happiness in facing the varied challenges of daily life. -Simon Marinker
