Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the post-war period, Berlin and Naples experienced a phase of profound changes, essentially influenced by external factors: the less rigid urban structure which had been ruined by World War II, resulting in severe changes in the social and economic structure, an uncritical reception and implementation of largely theoretical models of functionalism in urban planning, and in the design of the new public building interventions. On the one hand, between the 1940s and the 1980s, Berlin experienced a considerable loss in population, a political isolation and an urban splitting, as the urban planning institutions, deeply influenced by relevant politics, slowly and thoroughly changed the cityscape. On the other hand, Naples suffered from a new phase of immigration as well as from the parallel densification of the old suburbs and the physical expansion of the city limits without consistent and socially appropriate urban planning measures. This phase of change, so full of contrasts, coincided with the establishment of new democratic systems in the Federal Republic of Germany and Italy, and with the fundamental goal of socially adequate housing in both the West and the East. The research involved a series of historical analyses of the relationship between urban development and social housing for critical reflection and to allow an informed evaluation of the contemporary condition. In particular, it investigated housing settlements realised in Berlin and Naples in the first four decades of the post-war period, which corresponds to the period in which public housing was central in both political and urban planning terms. The book focuses on places of living, the city and the house. Consequently, it investigates the scale of the project and that of the intervention, the relationship between innovation and the cultural reception of urban phenomena and, again, between the stage of the project and the realisation and upkeep of the interventions, between democratic expectations and the adequacy of the administration system. These steps have a direct effect on the social identity that inspires, structures and transforms the planned and then built city, that continuous dialogue between form and content (the past) that occurs, in general, through progressive and mutual adaptations. In the selection of the case studies, we have favoured interventions on the “periphery,” which are those in which theoretical and aesthetic trends have best manifested themselves and in which planning and design cultures could develop most widely. However, the periphery does not necessarily coincide with the geographical edges of the cities: both in Berlin and in Naples, historical events, or the particular topography have naturally shifted the “peripheral” location along a radius that only ideally starts from the city centre and often extends to its inner fringes. Rather, from a sociological point of view, the same interventions generally generate the peripheral condition, that is, marginalisation or social division. This, as we shall see, can be traced both on the large scale of the city and inside the neighbourhood. The materials are arranged in the following way: the text is introduced by a graphic and synthetic presentation of the historical context in Berlin and Naples and the documentation of the twelve case studies. In the second chapter, Comparison, which was mostly developed as the first by the young scholars involved in the project, three theoretical issues highlighted during the seminars are better presented: The ability of the project to involve the social level; the experimentalism of the interventions, in particular in construction technology, social approach and democratic participation; the relationship between public and private in the phases of implementation and the upkeep of the programmes. The third chapter, In-Depth Analysis, includes the contributions of the scientists involved to give a better articulated historical and critical analysis of many of selected case studies and of the wider urban and social context. The closing editorial paper offers a brief overview focusing on a selection of the theoretical nodes that emerged from the comparison of the materials from a contemporary perspective. The publication is the outcome of the homonymous research programme fully funded by DAAD German Academic Exchange Service and runned in 2019 in cooperation between the Technische Universität of Berlin, Department of Architecture (Habitat Unit) with the Università della Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli," Dipartimento di Architettura e Disegno Industriale in Aversa (Italy).

Paolo Marconi "The book I am proud to introduce here is very direct and well documented, as for the demonstration both of the scarce durability of contemporary housing, and of the absolute negativity of the contribution provided by it to our Country's economy and ecology. All of this is cleverly supported by a very accurate historical summary, compiled by Mazzola, of the negative consequences - above all from the social point of view- of the war to the "traditionalism", a phenomenon still present in a lot of Italian Schools of Architecture. The fact, proved by E.M. Mazzola with an extraordinary acumen and an exceptional documentary information, that in Italy "traditional housing could cost from 16,35% up to 40,74% less compared with current housing" it to be added to the fact that the building behavior's models he quotes as virtuosos, that is the buildings of Garbatella and San Saba's Roman quarters (now 80/100 years old) "have never been subjected to interventions of maintenance by the ownership, because they were wisely built according to traditional techniques". Book excerpt: In order to ensure their immediate survival, humans accept any sacrifice at the expense of their surrounding ecosystem. Sustainability is the key to build and harmony between our development and the consumption of our planet’s limited resources. Mindful of their past mistakes, developed countries should try and lead underdeveloped areas to a sustainable growth, finding compromises, making sacrifices and not exporting their worst practices, like speculating on the desperate need for survival of others, but their best ones instead. Such responsibility would be facilitated by a change coming from the bottom, a change in the aspirations of individuals and communities. The city, a urban ecosystem, is indeed the starting point of such changes. By interpreting these general targets, this paper aims at practically achievable actions that individuals can carry on in the urban environment, with a basic support by local authorities, to improve the socio-economic livability of their communities, considering ecological balance, well-being and technological progress. Turkey is a very interesting country, a growing economy and a melting pot of Western and Islamic culture. With a special look on this land, the actions that we’ve focused on concern: a. Sustainable mobility - introducing an approach to improve mobility in cities like Istanbul, as well as a model of sustainable mobility for the whole country. b. Cultural heritage, economic development and value creation – improving Turkish enormous cultural heritage through management renewal and the adoption of advanced technologies such as 3D. These two fields, are very much interlaced when considering urban development and sustainability. One stimulates territorial identification, the other allows to reach it. The global crisis we are witnessing today is not just a matter of ecology; it has to do with our lifestyles, the way we developed and how we manage our resources. The opportunity to rediscuss the principles of growth can be used to counter the enduring international economic crisis through the rediscovery of those values concerning the sustainable quality of life we need to aim at for our future development.

[English]: The design work carried out on the city of Frattaminore represented, for the students in the last year of the Master’s Program in Architecture 5UE, an important experiment, from a design and professional point of view, towards the development of an approach aimed at finding an adequate and factual response to the multiple needs posed by the reality of the context in which it operates. The book collects the results of the work carried out during the 2020-2021 academic year, highlighting the multiplicity of aspects and design topics addressed, as well as the variety of the proposed solutions. The structure of the book reflects this experimental approach, starting with the exploration of some preliminary topics and methods, examined in the “Essays” section; continuing through the tool of the “mapping” and the interaction with the environment and with the people who live the places; finally, working on assembling and defining a “synthesis” of data and investigations through the design proposals, described in the “Projects” section. Each project theme includes a theoretical study through an introductory essay, and several design variations to provide, in an alternative way, possible scenarios for the city. To try to solve the existing critical issues, yet to enhance the potential and the various heritage of the city of Frattaminore, the project proposals were built grafting into the existing, not oriented towards the definition of a closed form and a predetermined function. On the contrary, it has implied to work on the idea of an open form, which reuses what already exists, including multiple possibilities of use and continuously changing its perimeter, extending and incorporating urban pieces of different nature. Scenarios of new possible meanings and new urban transformations are, therefore, the result of this work, made up of different levels of study and research related to the general idea of Frattaminore as a city in transition.

[ANTONIA P. RECCHIA – Direttore Generale, Direzione Generale per il paesaggio, le belle arti, l’architettura e l’arte contemporanee, MiBAC] The project “Progettare Paesaggio, Landscape as Architecture” combines the inspiring design proposals drafted by a group of students of the Harvard Graduate School of Design headed by the teacher Paola Cannavò with a study of the portuense and ostiense areas and how the landscape might change due to the construction of new infrastructure, either being completed or in the design stage. The study includes guidelines for the requalification and enhancement of the area considered as a complex historical landscape; it also highlights the past and present active and dynamic protection measures and procedures adopted by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. [CHARLES WALDHEIM – Direttore, Dipartimento di Architettura del Paesaggio, Harvard Graduate School of Design] “This publication, and the design research that it documents, offers timely evidence of the contemporary challenges of urban form, ecological process, and economic development faced by the Italian capital.” “Highlighting the complex and contradictory ecological and economic impulses of a working port landscape, Cannavò proposes a renewed relevance for landscape architecture as a medium of urbanism. In so doing, she stakes an Italian position in the contemporary discourses of landscape urbanism and ecological urbanism, while pointing to a way forward for urbanism, even in the fields of Fuimicino.” [CHARLES WALDHEIM – Chair, Department of Landscape Architecture, Harvard Graduate School of Design]

Book excerpt: This work, fruit of the research activities of the Centre of Excellence on sustainable finance for infrastructure and smart cities (exsuf), set up in 2021 from the «Committee on Housing and Land Management» of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (unece) and from Liuc – Cattaneo University, aims to describe the state of the art in the regulations and principle features and definitions of sustainable finance and smart cities, analyzing the classical schemes of project financing and ppps and highlighting the present scenario in which public and private actors, and, in particular, private capital entities move. By means of a market analysis of ppps in Italy and thanks to requests coming from discussions with practitioners and sector experts, the text concludes by showing how classical ppps models have to evolve to guarantee flexibility and to promote constructive dialogue between public entities and the private sector with the goal of identifying new financial and design metrics and new ways of putting them into practice.

Based on the fundamentals of moral theory, the book examines governance and CSR in general, addressing questions such as: Is “good governance” not affected by moral concerns? How do the principles and practices of CSR standards adhere to or conflict with insights from business ethics and moral theory? To what extent do the standards and governance models provide normative guidance? Do the standards and governance guidelines provide an adequate means of benchmarking and auditing? Are these standards a help or a hindrance to stakeholder engagement and transparency? The book provides insightful and thought-provoking answers to these and many other important questions concerning CSR standards, and offers a valuable resource for practitioners, academics and students at business schools and other institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last fifteen years we witnessed a new ethnographic wave of studies that focused on practising architecture. This body of research aimed at grasping the socio-material dimension of architectural practice. They all relied on the assumption that architecture is collective but it is shared with a variety of nonhumans. These “new ethnographies” generated “thick descriptions” of the knowledge practices of different participants in design. This issue of “Ardeth” collects contributions that will address the ecology of contemporary architectural practice, scrutinizing it as involving actors with variable ontology, scale and politics; exploring empirically different formats of design and reflecting on the importance of ethnography for understanding contemporary architectural practices.

Book excerpt: This book examines the evolution of the phenomenon and explores the genesis of overtourism and the system dynamics underlining it. The 'overtourism' phenomenon is defined as the excessive growth of visitors leading to overcrowding and the consequential suffering of residents, due to temporary and often seasonal tourism peaks, that lead to permanent changes in lifestyles, amenities and well- being. Enormous tensions in overtourism affected destinations have driven the intensification of policy making and scholarly attention toward seeking antidotes to an issue that is considered paradoxical and problematic. Moving beyond the 'top 10 things you can do about overtourism', this book examines the evolution of the phenomenon and explores the genesis of overtourism as well as the system dynamics underpinning it. With a rigorous scientific approach, the book uses systems-thinking and contemporary paradigms around sustainable development, resilience planning and degrowth; while considering global economic, socio-political, environmental discourses. Researchers, analysts, policy makers and industry stakeholders working within tourism as well as those within the private sector, community groups, civil society groups and NGOs will find this book an essential source of information.
