Book Synopsis Caspar David Friedrich by : Nina Amstutz

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory look at how the mature work of Caspar David Friedrich engaged with concurrent developments in natural science and philosophy Best known for his atmospheric landscapes featuring contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies and morning mists, Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) came of age alongside a German Romantic philosophical movement that saw nature as an organic and interconnected whole. The naturalists in his circle believed that observations about the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms could lead to conclusions about human life. Many of Friedrich’s often-overlooked later paintings reflect his engagement with these philosophical ideas through a focus on isolated shrubs, trees, and rocks. Others revisit earlier compositions or iconographic motifs but subtly metamorphose the previously distinct human figures into the natural landscape. In this revelatory book, Nina Amstutz combines fresh visual analysis with broad interdisciplinary research to investigate the intersection of landscape painting, self-exploration, and the life sciences in Friedrich’s mature work. Drawing connections between the artist’s anthropomorphic landscape forms and contemporary discussions of biology, anatomy, morphology, death, and decomposition, Amstutz brings Friedrich’s work into the larger discourse surrounding art, nature, and life in the 19th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After discussing Lavater's place in eighteenth-century German letters and his importance in the history of Western physiognomy, Dr. Tytler examines the literary portrait in the modern novel and suggests that the development of techniques of character description and the growth of observational powers of narrators and characters alike, as manifest in fiction from the 1790s onward, may be more fully appreciated when considered in the light of the physiognomical background previously delineated. Download or read book The Hand Phrenologically Considered (Illustrated Edition) written by Anonymous and published by Echo Library. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subtitled "Being a Glimpse at the Relation of the Mind with the Organisation of the Body", this work was first published in 1848. In his preface the anonymous author explains that in compiling his own book he has drawn on two recently published European studies into the structure and conformation of the human hand, namely D'Arpentigny's "La Chirognomonie; ou, l'Art de Reconnaître les Tendances de l'Intelligence, d'après les Formes de la Main" (Paris, 1843), and "Ueber Grund und Bedentung der verschiedenen Formen der Hand in verschiedenen Personen" by Professor Carus (Stuttgart, 1846). Where the theories and statements of these two experts were not in accordance with his own experience, the author has chosen to omit or modify them, and he includes much original material related to his own findings. The book includes four full-page illustrations of different types of hand.
