Ancien pensionnaire de l'Ecole française d'Extrême-Orient, Jacques Gernet a été professeur à l'Université de Paris VII et directeur d'études à l'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. Il est aujourd'hui professeur au Collège de France : c'est le maître incontesté des études d'histoire chinoise en France. La première édition du Monde chinois date de 1972. Elle a été traduite en anglais, allemand, italien, et portugais. Pour la présente édition, l'auteur a écrit un nouveau chapitre sur la Chine de la mort de Mao au début des années 90, mis à jour chronologies et bibliographies, ajouté des commentaires et des notes qui rendent compte du dernier état des recherches et des connaissances sur l'histoire de la Chine.
