Download or read book Threadsuns written by Paul Celan and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of Paul Celan's most important books of poems, Threadsuns follows the Green Integer press publication of Breathturn, which received international critical acclaim. Consisting of 105 poems, arranged in five cycles, Threadsuns was composed between September 1965 and June 1967. If Breathturn was the opening gambit of Celan's "turn," the entry into the late work, then Threadsuns - the volume that may have received the least amount of commentary and analysis to date - may be said to be not only an extension or continuation of the previous volume, but the full-blown realization of Celan's late work."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Celan Studies written by Peter Szondi and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Szondi's Celan Studies marked the beginning of critical work on Paul Celan, the most important German poet of the second half of the twentieth century. The book's three studies each concentrate on a different Celan poem. "The Poetry of Constancy: Paul Celan's Translation of Shakespeare's Sonnet 105" investigates a historical turn from a poetry that claims to present its object to a poetry that only promises to do so. "Reading 'Engführung'" follows the movement of poetic language into territory undisclosed to epistemic reason. "Eden" addresses "Du liegst," a poem on the murder of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht; Szondi actually was with Celan when the poem was written. It analyzes the relation between the historical facts to which a poem refers and its composition. The book contains, as appendixes, Szondi's notes for three more projected studies of Celan poems, left unwritten at the time of his death in 1971.

Book Synopsis Islam, Secularism, and Liberal Democracy by : Nader Hashemi
Download or read book Islam, Secularism, and Liberal Democracy written by Nader Hashemi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam's relationship to liberal-democratic politics has emerged as one of the most pressing and contentious issues in international affairs. In Islam, Secularism, and Liberal Democracy, Nader Hashemi challenges the widely held belief among social scientists that religious politics and liberal-democratic development are structurally incompatible. This book argues for a rethinking of democratic theory so that it incorporates the variable of religion in the development of liberal democracy. In the process, it proves that an indigenous theory of Muslim secularism is not only possible, but is a necessary requirement for the advancement of liberal democracy in Muslim societies.

Book Synopsis Italian Psychology and Jewish Emigration under Fascism by : Patrizia Guarnieri
Download or read book Italian Psychology and Jewish Emigration under Fascism written by Patrizia Guarnieri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascism and the racial laws of 1938 dramatically changed the scientific research and the academic community. Guarnieri focuses on psychology, from its promising origins to the end of the WWII. Psychology was marginalized in Italy both by the neo-idealistic reaction against science, and fascism (unlike Nazism) with long- lasting consequences. Academics and young scholars were persecuted because they were antifascist or Jews and the story of Italian displaced scholars is still an embarrassing one. The book follows scholars who emigrated to the United States, such as psychologist Renata Calabresi, and to Palestine, such as Enzo Bonaventura. Guarnieri traces their journey and the help they received from antifascist and Zionist networks and by international organizations. Some succeeded, some did not, and very few went back.
Book Synopsis Controlling Laughter by : Anthony Corbeill
Download or read book Controlling Laughter written by Anthony Corbeill and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although numerous scholars have studied Late Republican humor, this is the first book to examine its social and political context. Anthony Corbeill maintains that political abuse exercised real powers of persuasion over Roman audiences and he demonstrates how public humor both creates and enforces a society's norms. Previous scholarship has offered two explanations for why abusive language proliferated in Roman oratory. The first asserts that public rhetoric, filled with extravagant lies, was unconstrained by strictures of propriety. The second contends that invective represents an artifice borrowed from the Greeks. After a fresh reading of all extant literary works from the period, Corbeill concludes that the topics exploited in political invective arise from biases already present in Roman society. The author assesses evidence outside political discourse—from prayer ritual to philosophical speculation to physiognomic texts—in order to locate independently the biases in Roman society that enabled an orator's jokes to persuade. Within each instance of abusive humor—a name pun, for example, or the mockery of a physical deformity—resided values and preconceptions that were essential to the way a Roman citizen of the Late Republic defined himself in relation to his community. Download or read book Heldenplatz written by Thomas Bernhard and published by Oberon Books. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Bernhard is widely considered to be one of the most important German playwrights in the post-war era. Highly acclaimed, he has written over twenty plays and novels and gained a reputation as one of Austria’s most controversial authors. Bernhard wrote Heldenplatz in 1988 as a response to the fiftieth anniversary of the Anschluss (annexation) of Austria by Hitler’s Germany. Highly controversial in Austria, the play concerns a Jewish professor who returns to Vienna after the Second World War and discovers that his fellow Austrians are as anti-semitic as ever. ‘Heldenplatz’ is the square in Vienna where the Austrian-born Hitler made his first speech after the Anschluss. In Heldenplatz, Bernhard's final play, he explores the shared isolation of people who have lost their bearings, along with most of their illusions.
Book Synopsis For the Maintenance of Landscape by : Mia Lecomte
Download or read book For the Maintenance of Landscape written by Mia Lecomte and published by Essential Translations. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most contemporary poets wear their cultural and artistic influences on their sleeve. Picking up a book in an English language bookstore, it is easy to see where the poet is coming from, either geographically, or culturally (ironic and formal; confessional and free etc). This may seem reductive until you read a book like the one you have in your hands. Put simply, Mia Lecomte is a quietly dazzling poet on her own terms. She is fed by multiple cultures, she is widely read, but her writing is unique and absolutely genuine. You won't have read anything like this.
