Dos son los objetivos perseguidos por la autora: hacer una descripción del aprendizaje del español por un niño y comprobar al mismo tiempo la validez de lo postulado por diversos investigadores. Para ello ha reunido un rico arsenal de materiales de primera mano: más de 4.000 expresiones, vocalizaciones, balbuceos, palabras y frases de su hijo, anotándolas diariamente y grabándolas con una periodicidad semanal, controlando los fenómenos y probando, contrastando, confirmando o enmendando las fórmulas teóricas, abordando la experiencia sin apriorismos. Tomando en cuenta la idiosincrasia del español, ha ido cribando una por una las hipótesis montadas sobre la estructura de otros idiomas. El libro consta de tres partes. En la primera se hace una exposición de las teorías más sobresalientes sobre la adquisición del lenguaje, analizando las aportaciones del conductismo (skinneriano sobre todo) y cotejándolas con el mentalismo chomskiano. En cuanto a las relaciones entre pensamiento y lenguaje, ofrece los puntos de vista de Piaget, Vygotski, Luria, Bruner... Se incluyen también las teorías de Lenneberg y de Sapir-Whorf. La segunda parte recoge las etapas sucesivas de la adquisición lingüística, analizando en cada una de ellas las teorías más representativas formuladas para explicar desarrollos y alteraciones en las fases de balbuceo, holofrástica, de dos palabras y telegráfica. La tercera parte recoge la progresión lingüística del niño objeto de estudio hasta los tres años, siguiendo empíricamente el rastro a sonidos, voces y frases. Book excerpt: En esta investigación se profundizó en la adquisición del sistema vocálico español por nativo-hablantes de inglés del dialecto norteamericano Midland, hablado en la zona medio-oeste de Estados Unidos. Los objetivos del estudio fueron la descripción y análisis del proceso de adquisición del sistema vocálico español por anglohablantes del dialecto, que eran estudiantes de E/LE. El estudio rompe con el enfoque parcial del tratamiento de las vocales, y se hace holísticamente, centrándose en las relaciones inter- e intrasistémicas de las vocales en contexto tónico y átono, en la lengua materna (inglés), la interlengua de los aprendientes, y la lengua meta (español). Para la recogida de datos se empleó el sistema de ¿repetición tardía¿ dentro de una frase portadora. Se exploraron los antecedentes lingüísticos de los informantes para clasificarlos en tres grupos de acuerdo con el nivel de adquisición en E/LE. La muestra analizada fue de N=45 divididos en tres niveles: principiantes, intermedios y avanzados. Los resultados de este trabajo revelaron que la adquisición de los contrastes vocálicos guarda diferencia entre la verticalidad y horizontalidad y que, de acuerdo con las características del dialecto de base Midland, las vocales anteriores y baja del español se adquieren antes que las posteriores. Los resultados de la investigación sustentan el proceso de creación de contrastes vocálicos y diferenciación de los ya existentes, propuestos en las hipótesis 5 y 6 del ¿Speech Language Model¿ de Flege (1995), y aportan evidencia sobre la adquisición de vocales en L2 como parte de un sistema. La dificultad para la obtención de resultados más concluyentes de diferencias en la adquisición entre los tres niveles estudiados exigirá, en trabajos futuros, incidir en la progresión de dicha adquisición desde un enfoque longitudinal, o en la reestructuración de la clasificación de los niveles de adquisición...
