Book excerpt: Partant des difficultés d'existence dans la capitale d'un des pays les plus pauvres du monde, l'hypothèse principale de ce travail est que si les individus arrivent à faire face et avancer, c'est qu'ils bénéficient de supports tels que la protection, la reconnaissance ou encore le réconfort moral, fournis pas leur intégration sociale. La thèse étudie alors les modes et déterminants de l'intégration dans cinq sphères principales (la famille, le quartier, le marché du travail, la communauté religieuse et la nation), met en évidence les liens entre ces différentes sphères, et analyse les effets de l'intégration sur le bien-être individuel. Il ressort que, bien que reposant en partie sur des logiques sociales différentes, l'attachement communautaire (investissement de la vie familiale et de la vie de quartier) et l'intégration systémique (participation au marché du travail, à la vie nationale et à la vie religieuse) sont partiellement substituables : la seconde conduit à se détacher des sphères familiales et de voisinage quand la marginalisation économique, religieuse et politique amène au contraire les individus à y trouver refuge. Il s'avère également que les capacités "supportives" des différentes sphères sont très inégales, le bien-être étant d'autant plus important que les individus sont mieux intégrés dans les sphères "modernes". Bien que multistratifiée et multidimensionnelle, l'intégration sociale apparaît alors fortement hiérarchisée, selon le niveau de formation mais aussi selon le genre des individus
