Il lungo processo che aveva caratterizzato per un intero secolo lo scenario europeo dalla fine dell’Impero napoleonico aveva visto il progressivo consolidarsi, contro tutte le opposizioni e gli ostacoli, della libertà come supremo valore etico. L’Europa aveva assistito alla nascita e alla diffusione di una fede nuova, di una vera e propria «religione della libertà», figlia del pensiero moderno, legata a una determinata concezione della realtà e portatrice di un’etica ad essa «conforme». La storia dell’Europa del secolo XIX è dunque per Croce la storia della lotta (vittoriosa) della «religione della libertà» contro le altre religioni in campo: da quella cattolica a quella dell’assolutismo monarchico, fino a quella «democratica» e a quella «comunista». I primi tre capitoli, dedicati alla religione della libertà e ai suoi avversari, costituiscono una premessa, a cui segue una disamina degli sviluppi storici dello scenario europeo fino alla guerra. L’Epilogo è un accorato appello contro gli odî nazionalistici che contrappongono gli Stati dando vita a un pericolosissimo «attivismo» belligerante. Le dittature di destra e di sinistra in Europa dimostrano ancora una volta che solo la «religione della libertà» sarà capace di progettare un nuovo ordine. In una lettera del 15 febbraio del 1932, nel ringraziare Croce per avergli dedicato il libro, Thomas Mann suggellerà la forza ideale del messaggio crociano in quel passaggio della storia europea che si avviava alla tragedia: «C’è da augurarsi di cuore che questo nuovo dono del Suo spirito possa essere presto tradotto nella nostra lingua. Dio sa se la Germania di oggi non ne ha bisogno».

Braudel's vision of an enclosed sea as a geographical opportunity for economic integration between nations with different religions, languages and ethnicities and political bodies still functions as a model for studies on a wide range of contexts. The goal of the 50th Study Week was to go beyond the study of individual systems in isolation, and to combine instead different analysis of open and enclosed seas or coastal areas in order to understand the integration role played by maritime connections in Europe. Since in pre-industrial civilizations water transport was easier than land transport, the time has come to bring attention to the way these relationship networks operated both on a European level and with Asian and North African trade partners. This volume starts from the great research traditions which have, however, rarely been integrated on a larger and continental scale, and analyses them on either a regional or thematic basis. Immanuel Wallerstein has developed Braudel's concept by conceptualising its intercultural and transnational dimensions and its role in the system of labour. He called it a "world system", not because it involves the whole world, but because it is larger than any legally defined political unit. And it is a "world economy" because the base link between the different parts of the system has an economic nature. The various regional research aspects and traditions have been linked together in a coherent approach which aims at evaluating: - What geographical, nautical, technical, economic, legal, social and cultural elements influenced the emergence of the various regional networks, and how these worked; - The nature and role of seaports as nodal points of sea routes and of their hinterland through rivers, canals and roads; - The commercial and personal ties between merchants and shipowners in various ports; - How regional networks connected with each other and how, over time, they ended up integrating into larger units; - How private networks, initially between merchant and seafarer organizations, ended up dealing with local authorities and, after their growth, with states and empires in order to protect their interests.

Book excerpt: The metaphor of marriage often describes the relationship between poetry and music in both medieval and modern writing. While the troubadours stand out for their tendency to blur the distinction between speaking and singing, between poetry and song, a certain degree of semantic slippage extends into the realm of Italian literature through the use of genre names like canzone, sonetto, and ballata. Yet, paradoxically, scholars have traditionally identified a 'divorce' between music and poetry as the defining feature of early Italian lyric. Senza Vestimenta reintegrates poetic and musical traditions in late medieval Italy through a fresh evaluation of more than fifty literary sources transmitting Trecento song texts. These manuscripts have been long noted by musicologists, but until now they have been used to bolster rather than to debunk the notion that so-called 'poesia per musica' was relegated to the margins of poetic production. Jennings revises this view by exploring how scribes and readers interacted with song as a fundamentally interdisciplinary art form within a broad range of literary settings. Her study sheds light on the broader cultural world surrounding the reception of the Italian ars nova repertoire by uncovering new, diverse readers ranging from wealthy merchants to modest artisans.
