This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formato del archivo: PDF The present volume collects the updated versions of several contributions already published elsewhere and some new chapters on the history of education in Spain and Germany which have been brought together in this form for the benefit of those attending English-language classes on the topic aimed at international as well as Spanish students. The individual articles function as case studies of different fields in the history of education. They are characterised not only by their difference in focus, but also in the methods and sources they include, providing an insight into the breadth and variety of the field. It is particularly noteworthy that the comparative orientation of several articles moves beyond a national perspective of history, demonstrating concrete examples of the transnational interconnectedness of producing and circulating educational knowledge.
Book Synopsis The Worlds of Positivism by : Johannes Feichtinger
Download or read book The Worlds of Positivism written by Johannes Feichtinger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to trace the origins and significance of positivism on a global scale. Taking their cues from Auguste Comte and John Stuart Mill, positivists pioneered a universal, experience-based culture of scientific inquiry for studying nature and society—a new science that would enlighten all of humankind. Positivists envisaged one world united by science, but their efforts spawned many. Uncovering these worlds of positivism, the volume ranges from India, the Ottoman Empire, and the Iberian Peninsula to Central Europe, Russia, and Brazil, examining positivism’s impact as one of the most far-reaching intellectual movements of the modern world. Positivists reinvented science, claiming it to be distinct from and superior to the humanities. They predicated political governance on their refashioned science of society, and as political activists, they sought and often failed to reconcile their universalism with the values of multiculturalism. Providing a genealogy of scientific governance that is sorely needed in an age of post-truth politics, this volume breaks new ground in the fields of intellectual and global history, the history of science, and philosophy.
Book Synopsis Nationalism and Transnationalism in Spain and Latin America, 18081923 by :
Download or read book Nationalism and Transnationalism in Spain and Latin America, 18081923 written by and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twin focus of this book is on the importance of the Spanish heritage on nation and state building in nineteenth-century Spanish-speaking Latin America, alongside processes of nation and state building in Spain and Latin America. Rather than concentrating purely on nationalism and national identity, the book explores the linkages that remained or were re-established between Spain and her former colonies; as has increasingly been recognised in recent decades, the nineteenth century world was marked by the rise of the modern nation state, but also by the development of new transnational connections, and this book accounts for these processes within a Hispanic context.
Book Synopsis Philosophical Challenges of Plurality in a Global World by : David Díaz-Soto
Download or read book Philosophical Challenges of Plurality in a Global World written by David Díaz-Soto and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of essays by a select array of international scholars, on a range of issues concerning plurality, pluralism, and other closely related concepts, which constitute the framework and guiding thread for the whole volume. The themes and subjects dealt with here address issues of the greatest concern, particularly in the delicate context of present-day Europe and of modern societies with a global scale. The volume’s basis is the belief that pluralism, globality, technology, mass media, and computer networks are distinctive traits of contemporary society in all its complexity – and that, therefore, such notions provide essential conceptual tools for explaining and understanding the current age. Featured in this volume are twelve contributions by scholars from different fields of philosophy, the humanities and the social sciences. In their essays, the contributors address the complexities of the contemporary world and the challenges with which it confronts all these disciplines. In this way, they provide a philosophical analysis of phenomena, situations, and problems that are typical of this complex world. Their different approaches and disciplinary perspectives all share an open-mindedness which is characteristic of the philosophical attitude; but also take into account the results of research in different fields of the human sciences as applied to the study of contemporary society, politics and culture, as well as artistic practice and aesthetic experience. This book will be of interest for scholars in the fields of philosophy, political sciences, Spanish thought, theory of art and literature; for students in programs of cultural studies or of the different fields of the humanities; and for the general reader with an interest in philosophical reflection on the complexities of pluralism and the modern world.

Book Synopsis The Reception of Darwinism in the Iberian World by : T.F Glick
Download or read book The Reception of Darwinism in the Iberian World written by T.F Glick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-10-31 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Twenty-five years ago, at the Conference on the Comparative Reception of Darwinism held at the University of Texas in 1972, only two countries of the Iberian world-Spain and Mexico-were represented.' At the time, it was apparent that the topic had attracted interest only as regarded the "mainstream" science countries of Western Europe, plus the United States. The Eurocentric bias of professional history of science was a fact. The sea change that subsequently occurred in the historiography of science makes 1972 appear something like the antediluvian era. Still, we would like to think that that meeting was prescient in looking beyond the mainstream science countries-as then perceived-in order to test the variation that ideas undergo as they pass from center to periphery. One thing that the comparative study of the reception of ideas makes abundantly clear, however, is the weakness of the center/periphery dichotomy from the perspective of the diffusion of scientific ideas. Catholics in mainstream countries, for example, did not handle evolution much better than did their corre1igionaries on the fringes. Conversely, Darwinians in Latin America were frequently better placed to advance Darwin's ideas in a social and political sense than were their fellow evolutionists on the Continent. The Texas meeting was also a marker in the comparative reception of scientific ideas, Darwinism aside. Although, by 1972, scientific institutions had been studied comparatively, there was no antecedent for the comparative history of scientific ideas.
