Book excerpt: The Korean Economy: From Growth to Maturity takes an in-depth, amalgamated look at the evolution of Korea’s globalization drive from the early 2000s (Kim Dae-jung regime, 1998–2003) to the present period (Park Geun-hye, 2013–2017). The book discusses the role of foreign companies on the sustainability of Korea’s economic growth, the relationship between the chaebol and the MNCs, the evolution of Korea's nation brand, and the role of the state in Korea’s new economic trajectory (globalization) since the 2000s. With data collected from fieldwork, the book provides both empirical and qualitative insights (economic, socio-cultural and political economic analysis) into the Korean political economy and would be a very useful reference to other emerging economies experiencing similar globalization paths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Korea now stands at an important crossroads for national development and prosperity in the era of globalisation. It is quite natural to raise the following questions: What trends will be evident in the global economic order of the 21st century? Will the US be able to maintain its economic dominance of the global economy? What will be the future choice of Japan in the on-going trends? Will the main international political and economic partner of Japan be the US or will it be China? Or will Japan opt for a more independent path? What will be the role of Japan in the 21st Century? The economic centre of the world is moving from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Europe and the US to Asia. Russia has already pronounced itself to be an 'Eurasia' and US has declared Asia to be a region after attempting to break away from it. The main purpose of this book is to propose some strategies for Korea's survival and prosperity in the 21st century and draw possible lessons for the other developing countries, derived from the past economic development strategy and various reforms to solve the recent economic crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has South Korea's development influenced and been influenced by world events? The neo-Gramscian school theorises that world history reveals specific periods of hegemonic stability such as during the post World War II period of 'Pax Americana', but this new account of Korean development demonstrates that this speculation cannot be fully justified. Through making creative links between forms of state, education programmes, labour relations and the global climate throughout a series of 'historical blocs' such as the period of Japanese colonisation, Phoebe Moore covers the story of South Korean development. She observes that all economic development in South Korea has been carried out through 'passive revolution' driven by elite, frequently supported by external forces, against the will of a large part of the population, namely the working classes. In this original contribution Moore's critical International Political Economy approach sheds light on one of the fastest growing Asian economies and the 11th largest economy in the world. In doing so, she looks at the relationship between socio-economic change, passive revolution and its impact on the popular hegemony thesis.

In particular, the way Korea uses outside technologies, by accumulating indigenous capabilities, is still valid in the era of the knowledge economy. This volume examines the Korean model and Korea's march toward a knowledge economy from a poverty-ridden economy before the launch of full-scale industrialization in the early 1960s. It also emphasizes Korea's achievements, as well as remaining tasks within the four pillars of the knowledge economy, with a common theme throughout -- how Korea has narrowed the gaps in its knowledge and institutions in global competition with world leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book analyses the development problems of sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) from the eyes of a Korean diplomat with knowledge of the economic growth Korea has experienced in recent decades. The author argues that Africa's development challenges are not due to a lack of resources but a lack of management, presenting an alternative to the traditional view that Africa's problems are caused by a lack of leadership. In exploring an approach based on mind-set and nation-building, rather than unity – which tends to promote individual or party interests rather than the broader country or national interests – the author suggests new solutions for SSA's economic growth, inspired by Korea's successful economic growth model much of which is focused on industrialisation. This book will be of interest to researchers, policymakers, NGOs and governmental bodies in economics, development and politics studying Africa's economic development, and Korea's economic growth model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian financial crisis of 1997–1998 was supposed to be the death knell for the developmental state. The International Monetary Fund supplied emergency funds for shattered economies but demanded that states liberalize financial markets and withdraw from direct involvement in the economy. Financial liberalization was meant to spell the end of strategic industry policy and the state-directed "policy lending" it involved. Yet, largely unremarked by analysts, South Korea has since seen a striking revival of financial activism. Policy lending by state-owned development banks has returned the state to the core of the financial system. Korean development banks now account for one quarter of all loans and take the lead in providing low-cost finance to local manufacturing firms in strategic industries.Elizabeth Thurbon argues that an ideational analysis can help explain this renewed financial activism. She demonstrates the presence of a "developmental mindset" on the part of political leaders and policy elites in Korea. This mindset involves shared ways of thinking about the purpose of finance and its relationship to the productive economy. The developmental mindset has a long history in Korea but is subject to the vicissitudes of political and economic circumstances. Thurbon traces the structural, institutional, political, and ideational factors that have strengthened and at times weakened the developmental consensus, culminating in the revival of financial activism in Korea. In doing so, Thurbon offers a novel defense of the developmental state idea and a new framework for investigating the emergence and evolution of developmental states. She also canvasses the implications of the Korean experience for wider debates concerning the future of financial activism in an era of financialization, energy insecurity, and climate change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Strategic Coupling, Henry Wai-chung Yeung examines economic development and state-firm relations in East Asia, focusing in particular on South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore. As a result of the massive changes of the last twenty-five years, new explanations must be found for the economic success and industrial transformation in the region. State-assisted startups and incubator firms in East Asia have become major players in the manufacture of products with a global reach: Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision has assembled more than 500 million iPhones, for instance, and South Korea’s Samsung provides the iPhone’s semiconductor chips and retina displays. Drawing on extensive interviews with top executives and senior government officials, Yeung argues that since the late 1980s, many East Asian firms have outgrown their home states, and are no longer dependent on state support; as a result the developmental state has lost much of its capacity to steer and direct industrialization. We cannot read the performance of national firms as a direct outcome of state action. Yeung calls for a thorough renovation of the still-dominant view that states are the primary engine of industrial transformation. He stresses action by national firms and traces various global production networks to incorporate both firm-specific activities and the international political economy. He identifies two sets of dynamics in these national-global articulations known as strategic coupling: coevolution in the confluence of state, firm, and global production networks, and the various strategies pursued by East Asian firms to attain competitive positions in the global marketplace.

This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After years of strong performance, Korea’s economy entered a crisis in 1997, owing largely to structural problems in its financial and corporate sectors. These problems emerged in the second half of that year, when the capital inflows that had helped finance Korea’s growth were reversed, as foreign investors—reeling from losses in other Southeast Asian economies—decided to reduce their exposure to Korea. This paper focuses on the sources of the crisis that originated in the financial sector, the measures taken to deal with it, and the evolution of key banking and financial variables in its aftermath.
