Book excerpt: This book is a translation and study of the Vajrasamadhi-Sutra and an examination of its broad implications for the development of East Asian Buddhism. The Vajrasamadhi-Sutra was traditionally assumed to have been translated from Sanskrit, but some modern scholars, principally in Japan, have proposed that it is instead an indigenous Chinese composition. In contrast to both of these views, Robert Buswell maintains it was written in Korea around A.D. 685 by a Korean adept affiliated with the East Mountain school of the nascent Chinese Ch'an tradition. He thus considers it to be the oldest work of Korean Ch'an (or Son, which in Japan became known as the Zen school), and the second-oldest work of the sinitic Ch'an tradition as a whole. Buswell makes his case for the scripture's dating, authorship, and provenance by placing the sutra in the context of Buddhist doctrinal writings and early Ch'an literature in China and Korea. This approach leads him to an extensive analysis of the origins of Ch'an ideology in both countries and of the principal trends in the sinicization of Buddhism. Buddhism has typically been studied in terms of independent national traditions, but Buswell maintains that the history of religion in China, Korea, and Japan should be treated as a whole. In Aspiring to Enlightenment, Richard McBride combines analyses of scriptural, exegetical, hagiographical, epigraphical, art historical, and literary materials to provide an episodic account of the cult in Silla times and its rise in an East Asian context through the mutually interconnected perspectives of doctrine and practice. McBride demonstrates that the Pure Land tradition emerging in Korea in the seventh and eighth centuries was vibrant and collaborative and that Silla monk-scholars actively participated in a shared, international Buddhist discourse. Monks such as the exegete par excellence Wŏnhyo and the Yogācāra proponent Kyŏnghŭng did not belong to a specific sect or school, but like their colleagues in China, they participated in a broadly inclusive doctrinal tradition. In modern Buddhist scholarship it seems natural to focus on the textual record of the Buddha's teachings, but overemphasizing that aspect risks losing sight of the potency of the Buddha's speech to effect liberation. Comparing Abhidharma and Chinese Buddhist conceptions of the Buddha's word, Eun-su Cho's study addresses the transmission and reinterpretation of theories of language and opens a doorway to Buddhist philosophical thought in East Asia. This is particularly important because technical Buddhist philosophical thought in East Asia has long been neglected, and has become overshadowed by academic and popular attention to Tibetan Buddhist philosophical thought. Sujung Kim challenges the long-held understanding of Shinra Myōjin as a protective deity of the Tendai Jimon school, showing how its worship emerged and developed in the complex networks of the East Asian “Mediterranean”—a “quality” rather than a physical space defined by Kim as the primary conduit for cross-cultural influence in a region that includes the Yellow Sea, the Sea of Japan (East Sea), the East China Sea, and neighboring coastal areas. While focusing on the transcultural worship of the deity, Kim engages the different maritime arrangements in which Shinra Myōjin circulated: first, the network of Korean immigrants, Chinese merchants, and Japanese Buddhist monks in China’s Shandong peninsula and Japan’s Ōmi Province; and second, that of gods found in the East Asian Mediterranean. Both of these networks became nodal points of exchange of both goods and gods. Kim’s examination of temple chronicles, literary writings, and iconography reveals Shinra Myōjin’s evolution from a seafaring god to a multifaceted one whose roles included the god of pestilence and of poetry, the insurer of painless childbirth, and the protector of performing arts. Shinra Myōjin and Buddhist Networks of the East Asian “Mediterranean” is not only the first monograph in any language on the Tendai Jimon school in Japanese Buddhism, but also the first book-length study in English to examine Korean connections in medieval Japanese religion. Unlike other recent studies on individual Buddhist deities, it foregrounds the need to approach them within a broader East Asian context. Book excerpt: An Anthology of East Asian Commentaries on the Nyāyapraveśa is a manual of Buddhist Logic by the scholar-monk Bak Hanyeong 朴漢永(1870–1948). Bak Hanyeong participated in the establishment movement of the Imje Buddhist Order 臨濟宗 in 1911, attempting to maintain authenticity of Korean Buddhist tradition. He served as principle of the Jung’ang Professional School of Buddhism (Jung’ang Bulgyo Jeonmunhakgyo 中央佛敎專門學校), the highest educational institute for Buddhism, and right after Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945, he was appointed as the first Supreme Patriarch of the Administrative Headquarters of Korean Buddhist Order (Joseon Bulgyo Jung’ang Chongmuweon 朝鮮佛敎中央總務院). An Anthology of East Asian Commentaries on the Nyāyapraveśa is a selected collection of East Asian commentaries on Xuanzang’s Chinese translation (647) of Śaṇkarasvāṇmin’s (ca. the late 6th century) Nyāyapraveśa. This work is written by centering on Ming dynasty Yogācāra monk Mingyu’s 明昱 (d.u.) commentary, the Yinming ruzhengli lun zhishu 因明入正理論直疏, along with Bak Hanyeong’s own “supplementary explanations” (bohae 補解) and “additional comments” (jeungju 增註), and also cites Zhixu’s 智旭 (1599–1655) commentary, the Yinming ruzhengli lun zhijie 因明入正理論直解. The expression hoeseok in the title means “to reconcile [conflicting] interpretations.” Although An Anthology of East Asian Commentaries on the Nyāyapraveśa is not Bak Hanyeong’s original arguments, it is one of important sources for the study of the modern Korean Buddhism, since this work contains detailed explanations of the commentaries on such a specific area as Buddhist Logic and thus represents Korean Buddhist scholastic standards of the modern period. The base texts for the translation are the edition of the Bulgyo jung’ang hangnim (1916) and the edition of the Jibang hagnim at Songgwang Monastary (1920). Both texts end with the phrase “The śramaṇa Gusan has interpreted [the Nyāyapraveśa] by reconciling [conflicting] interpretations” (龜山沙門會釋).
