Book excerpt: A trove of ready-to-use, solution-focused therapy techniques for work with children, adults, and families. A trove of ready-to-use, solution-focused therapy techniques for work with children, adults, and families on commonly encountered problems, The Therapist’s Treasure Chest is an easy-to-navigate pocket resource for finding a proven and age-appropriate therapeutic solution for the particular condition, symptom, or challenge a mental health professional is faced with on a given day of practice. Seasoned practitioners Andrea and Filip Caby introduce the foundational principles of solution-focused therapy, followed by an overview of therapeutic questioning techniques, both basic and advanced, and key advice on how to productively lead a therapeutic conversation. The third part of the Treasure Chest presents specific indications and interventions—hundreds of tried and tested approaches that have proven effective for symptoms and disorders from severe trauma to thumb-sucking, depression and anxiety to eating disorders. Each intervention includes an explanation of the theoretical background from which it has emerged, a practical guide to applying it with clients, and a section of helpful notes, advice, suggested settings, case examples, and contraindications.

This diploma tries to answer the question "How do schizophrenic patients asses the importance of cognitive training and its effect on their everyday life and their tendency?" A questionnaire was accomplished with schizophrenic patients, who are members of a cognitive therapy group. The results proof that the patients assess cognitive training as very important. Further this kind of therapy influences the patients` mood in a quantitativ way. Positive changes concerning everyday life are also described. Patients also report about other positive effects due to the cognitve training. In fact cognitive training represents an important method in the psychiatrical occupational therapy.

Book excerpt: This book looks at dreams from a twenty-first century perspective. It takes its inspiration from Freud's insights, but pursues psychoanalytic interest into both neuroscience and the modern psychoanalytic consulting room. The book looks at laboratory research on dreaming alongside the modern clinical use of dreams and links together clinical and empirical research, integrating classical ideas with the plurality of psychoanalytic theoretical constructs available to modern researchers. Psychoanalysts writing about dreams have traditionally represented the cutting edge of clinical and theoretical development, and this book is no exception. Many of the contributions, as well as the epistemological position taken by the writers, represent a kind of radical openness to new ways of thinking about the clinical situation and about theory. In line with the ambition of the editors, this volume represents an integration of theories and disciplines, and a scientific context for modern psychoanalysis. The link between clinical research and extraclinical research via the royal road of dreaming is a theme that runs through all the contributions.

Book excerpt: This book describes the causes of and methods to prevent states of exhaustion and burnout in professional contexts. It overviews a range of issues from human resource practices in commercial enterprises, to prevention of fatigue and preservation of the working individual’s vital energy. The book also addresses new measurement and training methods stemming from the latest applications of biofeedback, testing and training methods, and heart rate variability research, and their application in companies’ modern preventive management strategies, as well as in occupational and business psychotherapeutic practice. Approaching companies as social, living systems, prevention is discussed as a management tool in the corporate culture and as a strategic management decision. Selected case examples show the daily demands and challenges at the workplace and discuss work-life integration, on living and working “in flow,” and on the various facets of working persons’ energy. This book is suitable for a wide range of audiences including professionals implementing these tools and practices as well as graduate students studying these contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the study of folklore survive brutal wars and nationalized misappropriations? Does folklore make sense in an age of fearsome technology? These are two of several questions this book addresses with specific and profound reference to the history of folklore studies in Germany. There in the early nineteenth century in the ideological context of romantic nationalism, the works of the Brothers Grimm pioneered the discipline. The sublimation of folklore studies with the nation's political history reached a peak in the 1930s under the Nazi regime. This book takes a full look at what happened to folklore after the end of World War II and the defeat of the Nazis. A special focus on Lutz Röhrich (1923-2006), whose work spans the decades from 1955 to 2006, makes this book a unique window into a monumental reclamation. In 1945 Röhrich returned from the warfront at the age of twenty-three, a wounded amputee. Resuming his education, he published his seminal Märchen und Wirklichkeit (Folktale and Reality) in 1956. Naithani argues that through this and a huge body of scholarship on folktale, folksong, proverbs, and riddles over the next decades, Röhrich transformed folklore scholarship by critically challenging the legacies of Romanticism and Nazism in German folklore work. Sadhana Naithani's book is the first full-length treatment of this extraordinary German scholar written in English.

Book excerpt: Maverick London-based Scottish artist Martin Creed (b. 1968) has spent the past twenty years subverting the fine lines between art and life, art and silliness, and art and provocation. Melding Conceptual Art smarts and Minimalist literal-mindedness in his videos, paintings and sculptures, Creed undermines the preciousness, skill and aloofness of art. This new monograph is not large but it is extensive enough to document the six site-specific installations currently at the Kunsthalle Vogelman, including essays by Anouchka Grose and Matthia L.bke, and an interview with the artist by Beate Ermacora. Awarded the Turner Prize in 2001 for a piece consisting of regularly switching a light on and off in a room, Martin Creeds playful but rigorous work challenges the viewer to engage with art, space and the world in general. When asked why he made art, Creed answered, To make myself feel better. His current turn at the Park Avenue Armory, NY (2016)a kind of extended happeningmust be making him feel very good indeed.
