Book excerpt: For the first decade of the 20th century more Coca-Cola was consumed in Atlanta than any other city. It was the city's most famous product and made Atlanta known around the world in just a few years' time. The first sky scraper in the south was the Candler Building designed as the home for the Coca-Cola Company. Atlanta citizens acknowledged this fact when they wanted a glass of Coca-Cola by asking the dispenser for "a brick in the Candler Building."But the citizens of Atlanta were drinking more than Coca-Cola - they were also drinking Afri-Kola and Koca Nola, Celery=Cola and Capacola, Fan-Taz and Pep-To-Lac, Dope and Koke, Jit-A-Cola and Ko-Nut, Nova-Kola and Rye-Ola. In addition to Asa Candler's Coca-Cola they were drinking Daniel's Koko-Kolo, Venable's Coca-Kola, and Standard Coca-Cola. Lee Hagan claimed to sell ten thousand drinks of his Red Rock Ginger Ale in Atlanta every day. There were dozens of brand name and proprietary soft drinks sold in the city of Atlanta in the first part of the 20th century. Many of these drinks were local in origin yet advertised nationally. Afri-Kola was bottled as far west as Texas, Koca Nola as far north as Maine and west to Washington state, and Nova-Kola as far away as Illinois. Others found markets regionally in Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and other nearby states. Some of these beverages were intended to ride on the successful coattails of Coca-Cola and found themselves in court as a result. Whether selecting a similar name such as 'Venable's Coca-Kola' or substituting their own drink on calls for the original, these imitators found the Coca-Cola Company ready to protect its trademark and business. Here is the story of Atlanta's Kola Wars for the first fifty years.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1996, award-winning journalist Fen Montaigne embarked on a hundred-day, seven-thousand-mile journey across Russia. Traveling with his fly rod, he began his trek in northwestern Russia on the Solovetsky Islands, a remote archipelago that was the birthplace of Stalin's gulag. He ended half a world away as he fished for steelhead trout on the Kamchatka Peninsula, on the shores of the Pacific. His tales of visiting these far-flung rivers are memorable, and at heart, Reeling in Russia is far more than a story of an angling journey. It is a humorous and moving account of his adventures in the madhouse that is Russia today, and a striking portrait that highlights the humanity and tribulations of its people. In the end, the reader is left with the memory of haunted northern landscapes, of vivid sunsets over distant rivers, of the crumbling remains of pre-Revolutionary estates, and a cast of dogged Russians struggling to build a life amid the rubble of the Communist regime.

It is set in the larger context of the exceptional growth of the church in the non-Western world during the twentieth century, which has been characterized by a diversity of localized cultural expressions. It recognizes that the center of Christian influence numerically and theologically is shifting southward to Africa, Latin America, and Asia. It affirms the reality that wherever the gospel goes, it takes root in the local culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diva Brown was no "elusive phantom," as at least one writer claimed. She was a real person, living in Atlanta in 1888, and acquainted with Coca-Cola inventor John S. Pemberton. She spent her adult life selling cola, either bottled read to drink or her formula so others could make it.Much of what people think they know of Diva Brown is wrong. This is in part due to the fanciful and incorrect statements made by Diva Brown, herself, and those who knew her, in order to either validate or discredit her claim to the original Coca-Cola formula. The National Bottler's Gazette alternately called her a "Successful New Woman of the South," and a "Fake and a Humbug."This book uses diverse primary sources: court transcripts, corporation records, letters, and original advertisements to provide a complete account of Diva Brown and her life as the self-proclaimed "Original Coca-Cola Woman." Where possible, the words are those of Diva Brown and those who knew her: John S. Pemberton, Asa Candler, James C. Mayfield, Frank Robinson, and many others. Did Diva Brown have possession of the original Coca-Cola formula? Read this account and decide for yourself. In two decades of advertising and selling her formula Diva Brown was not once sued by the Coca-Cola Company. You be the judge.
